A federal judge set a November 6th trial date for Calvin Williams, former chief administrator for the Shelby County Commission. U.S. District Judge Hardy Mays set the date Friday after prosecutor Tim DiScenza said he was ready for trial.
As he rode down an elevator with reporters following the brief hearing, Williams said, “I won’t be a Roscoe Dixon. If I didn’t have a defense I wouldn’t be going to trial.”
Williams is charged with extortion. He resigned his administrative position in 2003 and has promised to write a book about his experiences.
A federal court jury convicted former state Sen. Roscoe Dixon on political corruption charges earlier this summer. Prosecutors have not said whether the Williams indictment is part of the ongoing Tennessee Waltz investigation.
