Memphis Tigers 77, Oakland 46

Want to know the first thing that went through new Tiger football coach Larry Porter’s head when he was introduced to 15,689 adoring fans at FedExForum tonight? “How can I get this many people in the Liberty Bowl?” (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.)

After the pregame lovefest, the Tiger basketball team continued its welcome of rookie coach Josh Pastner by beating Oakland University, 77-46, for the home team’s third consecutive win. Elliot Williams led the Tigers in scoring — as he has all five games this season — with 20 points, while center Will Coleman scored 12 points, grabbed six rebounds, and blocked four shots. An Oakland team expected to compete for the Summit League championship was made to look like more early-season fodder for a Tiger team looking less and less like one in transition, and more like one on a mission.

“We did a good job of getting after it offensively,” said Williams after the game. “And defensively, the scouting report was great. Throughout the week, Coach Pastner told us this was an NCAA tournament team, that they had great players. Our team starts defensively, and that leads to good offense.”

Tuesday Is World AIDS Day

Planned Parenthood of the Greater Memphis Region will offer free HIV testing, counseling, and a three-on-three basketball tournament on World AIDS Day (Tuesday, December 1st).

The event will be held at the Lester Community Center at 317 Tillman from 2 to 5:30 p.m.

If the stress of being tested is too much to bear, keep in mind that everyone who gets tested at the event will be given a coupon for a free chair massage at LSI Medispa. The test used will provide results in less than 20 minutes.

Although Shelby County has less than 15 percent of the state’s population, the county accounts for nearly 40 percent of the 14,000-plus cases statewide.

The Med

MEDNight.jpg

If The Med gets emergency financial relief, it probably won’t be from Washington.

U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen told a small group of activists Monday that it is “doubtful” that The Med’s salvation will come from Washington. He said funds are more likely to come from Tennessee state government and neighboring states Arkansas and Mississippi whose indigent residents use The Med.

At the same meeting, Dr. Arthur Sutherland, a retired cardiologist and head of the Tennessee Chapter of Physicians for National Health Program, said The Med is likely to get some kind of stop-gap funding to stay open but still needs long-term help from passage of the national health care bill.

“Medicare for all is the way to go,” said Sutherland.

If ignorance is bliss, then making eye contact with a pig seconds before it’s slaughtered is another thing altogether. The guy having the swine face-time is novelist Jonathan Safran Foer, who, after the birth of his son, was driven to explore what “eating animals” really means.
