Eric Barnes: In His Own Words, On His Debut Novel

620a/1246371283-1932961674.jpg First there was the fall of the dot-coms. Then there was the fall of Enron. Yesterday, there was the sentencing of Bernard Madoff to 150 years in prison. But now, it’s time for the fall of Core Communications: the fictionalized big-business scam at the heart of Memphian Eric Barnes’ debut novel, Shimmer (Unbridled Books).

Barnes is discussing and signing copies of Shimmer at Davis-Kidd Booksellers today, June 30th, starting at 6 p.m. Just don’t expect the author to be quitting his day job anytime soon. (He’s publisher of the Memphis Daily News and the Memphis News.) And don’t think of Shimmer as another corporate thriller. Barnes doesn’t see it that way. Here’s why. And here’s more.

Bianca Knows Best …

Dear Bianca,

Several years ago, while I was in college, I shared an apartment with my best friend. But during the year we lived together, I learned that sharing a place with your best bud is a horrible idea.

We fought over all sorts of things, and quite frankly, I saw a side of her that was, well, kind of nutty. During that time, I learned she was a compulsive liar who suffered from delusional thinking. She thought quite highly of herself and would screw anyone over that got in the way of whatever crazy scheme she had going at the time.

When our lease was up and we’d both graduated college, she moved to Oregon. I stayed here, hoping to never see her again. Years passed with no contact, and then just last week, I got a mysterious text message asking how I was.

I responded with “Who is this?” Five seconds later, my phone was ringing. Curiosity got the best of me, and I answered. To my surprise, my old roommate (whom we’ll call Jessica) screamed in my ear, “Oh my god! It’s Jessica! I’m moving back to Memphis next week!”

My world came crashing down. In days, Jessica will be back in my life. She doesn’t know where I live, but she has my phone number. She knows where some of our old mutual friends live, and she’ll track me down soon enough. How can I keep her out of my life? Should I move out of the city?

–Running From My Problem

Dear Running,

Throughout college and beyond, I’ve had one cardinal rule about roommates — never, ever live with your best friend. Boyfriends are fine. Acquaintances will do. But if you room with your best pal, you’ll certainly be enemies before the lease is up.

Of course, you learned this the hard way. Sounds like your old college roommate had more than a few issues, and living with her brought out her true colors. But don’t dismiss the fact that she’s been away for several years. A lot can change in a person over time, and maybe Jessica is new gal these days. I certainly wouldn’t recommend moving in with her again or even trying to re-establish your old friendship, but if she finds you, be nice.

You might try warning your mutual friends to keep your location or personal information secret. That way, you might be able to stave her off long enough for her to make a new set of buds here, and maybe then, she’ll be less interested in you.

But don’t forget that Memphis is a big small town. Everybody knows everybody, and people aren’t that hard to track down. You might bump into her at a restaurant or bar, and if you do, be polite. But take the situation as an opportunity to let your desire to maintain some distance be known.

Explain to her that you’ve closed some doors on your past, and you’d rather not have old relationships re-kindled. The only way to keep her from following you around is to make your intentions clear — you don’t want to be friends anymore. Tell her if you see her in public or with a mutual friend, you’ll be cordial. But make certain she knows your spare bedroom (or couch) is not up for grabs.

Banana and Other Stuff Smoothie

When the temperature hits triple digits, I, like most Memphians, seriously consider moving to Antarctica for the summer and/or taking up residence inside a deep freezer. However, since neither of those options is viable, I turn to other cool activities, like taking cold showers and drinking smoothies.

Back-Up Guard Candidates

If there’s one thing the Grizzlies have made clear in the aftermath of last week’s draft, it’s that this team still needs some backcourt depth and they plan to get it. Expect the Grizzlies to acquire an experienced ball-handling guard in the coming weeks, someone who can come off the bench behind Mike Conley at the very least.

As I did with the power forward spot a couple of weeks back, allow me to help the front office out with a few suggestions.

Unlikely targets: There are a few attractive targets potentially available via trade or free agency that will be too costly for the Griz, who will spend the serious money on power forward if they spend it anywhere . That’s why you won’t Kirk Hinrich, Leandro Barbosa, Ramon Sessions on this list.

The Candidates:
1. Keyon Dooling (Under Contract): 29 year old combo guard, shot better than 40% from three last year. Good defender. Not a pure point but can get by. Dooling is owed $7.4 million over the next two seasons and may not have a role after the Nets just acquired Rafer Alston and Courtney Lee. With Nets looking to maximize cap space in 2010, would they deal him straight up for Greg Buckner?

Anti-Gay Killings on the Rise

Homicides against LGBT people nationwide rose 28 percent last year and, according to a report by the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs released earlier this month, anti-gay killings are at their highest rate in 10 years.

A blog posting on Change.org cites a few high-profile LGBT murders, including the murder of local transgender woman Duanna Johnson in Memphis last fall. Johnson was found dead near Hollywood Street in North Memphis. Though no ones knows the motive or even the killer responsible, many have theorized that her gender identity could have come into play as it did earlier in the year when she was beaten by a Memphis Police officer.

Why the increase in anti-gay murders? Sharon Stapel, director of the New York City anti-violence project, told the Associated Press (AP) that it could have something to do with backlash over gay rights fights — same-sex marriage debates, non-discrimination legislation, and the fight to repeal the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

“The more visibility there is, the more likely we’re going to see backlash, and that’s exactly what we see here,” Stapel told the AP.

Does that mean gay rights advocates should back off? Absolutely not. Though it’s tragic that homophobia is causing an uptick in gay killings, the sooner equal rights are established, the more likely that homophobia will wane. It may not happen the day after gay marriage is legalized, but after a generation of kids grows up in a society that treats LGBT folks as equals, homophobia will go the way of racism and sexism. That’s not to say that racism and sexism no longer exist, but both ways of thinking are far less acceptable in mainstream society than homophobia.

The Day the Music Died Again

fafa/1246301438-p._20_cover_story_5.jpg All this business about Michael Jackson dying has reminded us here at the Flyer of that August day back in 1977 when Elvis almost died. The similarities are eerie, though I suppose they could be overstated, seeing that Elvis went on to have an eventful life and owned an NFL team, and Michael, well, won’t.

As for other matters, the fallout from Jackson’s demise continues. AbsoluteNow.com says Memphian Justin Timberlake may play a part in rescuing Jackson’s sold-out shows in London. The report quotes an unnamed Timberlake confidant, who says, “Michael was Justin’s idol, like he was for many artists. Right now he’s still in shock but already there is a big feeling that he and maybe some others in the entertainment industry should do something to show their admiration for Michael and his music. Michael was working so hard to make his comeback in London work so it would be fitting if Justin and some of his friends fulfilled at least some of that commitment in some small way.”

The UK’s Daily Mail corroborates that JT may be involved in some kind of memorial show(s).

I only wish Elvis hadn’t died two years ago, cuz then he could be in the memorial concert, too. I’d have loved to have seen Elvis duet with Tito on “The Girl is Mine.”
