Rally Against Hate

A pro-gay billboard at Poplar Avenue and High Street was replaced Thursday, almost a week after vandals destroyed the original message. But the folks at the Memphis Gay & Lesbian Community Center (MGLCC) aren’t stopping there.

On Sunday at 1 p.m., MGLCC members and gay rights advocates will gather in front of First Congregational Church to rally against hate in response to the destruction MGLCC’s Coming Out Day billboard. One of five different pro-gay billboards across the city, the Poplar Avenue sign features gay former Marine Tim Smith with the words “I’m gay and I protected your freedom.”

The rally will be followed by the final planning meeting for the local delegation going to the National Equality March in Washington DC on October 11th. That meeting will take place at 3 p.m. at MGLCC (892 S. Cooper).

Knoxville’s Haslam Goes Door-to-Door in Bartlett

Bill Haslam meets and greets.

  • Bill Haslam meets and greets.

If District Attorney Bill Gibbons, Memphis’ favorite son in the Republican field for governor, has a rear-view mirror in good repair, it’s probably showing him, more often than he’d like, the figure of Knoxville mayor Bill Haslam, a frequent interloper on Gibbons’ electoral home turf.

Haslam, who has made repeated visits to Memphis in his own quest for traction in next year’s gubernatorial race, was here again last week, going door-to-door in a Bartlett neighborhood. “Obviously you can’t visit every household in the state, but we’re doing this three times a week, alternating west and middle and east. Then we start the cycle all over again,” Halsam said.

The Knoxville mayor made the rounds in Memphis, meeting with key supporters, addressing the East Memphis Rotary Club and stopping by the Church Health Center, among other stops..That he still has some miles to go in his quest to get known was indicated when he knocked on one door in Bartlett and was greeted by a woman who said, “Who are you? A state senator?” (Her question may have beenn prompted by the fact that her neighbor across the street is Jim Coley, a GOP state House member.

Haslam, whose family owns the Pilot Oil empire and who is the fundraising leader among all candidates (with some $3.5 million in receipts thus far), dismissed a recent straw poll among Republicans in Wilson County that showed Chattanooga congressman Zach Wamp well ahead and himself a weak third..

“If you look at straw polls historically,” Haslam said, “They haven’t been of much significance in determining elections.” He noted that eventual U.S.; Senate winner Bob Corker did dismally in the same poll before the 2006 election, “finishing behind somebody who wasn’t even in the race.” The bottom line: “We’re personally not worrying about straw polls now.”

(Of straw votes in general, Democrat Jim Kyle, the Shelby County Democrats’ favorite son among gubernatorial candidates, chose to put it this way while appearing at a party picnic in Memphis last weekend: “The Wilson County poll was won by Democrats. Only 141 people voted. The week before, in a comparably-sized county, Rutherford County, 320 people voted in the Democratic straw poll.” )

On the issue of gun legislation, Haslam, a professed “strong” supporter of the 2nd Amendment, defended his support of a recent local-option proposal in Knoxville assessing a modest fine on violators of injunctions which the city council has continued against carrying guns in restaurants and on parkgrounds.

Rock Star

Former Memphian Cecily Briggs began designing jewelry about 10 years ago.

“I wanted to design a piece for my boyfriend,” she says. “He was a boy from Germantown so he was kind of conservative. He didn’t wear a lot of jewelry.”

She tried to make the necklace three times before getting it the way she wanted it. But, in the meantime, workers at the bead store she was frequenting told her she had an eye for jewelry and encouraged her to continue making it.

Sound Advice: Japanese rockers Red Sneakers at Nocturnal

rs.jpg

Last year, the Red Sneakers showed up outta nowhere to be the surprise heroes of Gonerfest Five. The Japanese duo, big garage rock fans who seemed to have walked straight off the celluoid of Jim Jarmusch’s Mystery Train, got to play an incendiary set at Murphy’s (listen to the gig here) when Jay Reatard bowed out of his slot, and endeared themselves to the hearts of Memphis when they stuck around for a week, playing shows all over town.

When Gonerfest Six started last week, everyone wondered if the Red Sneakers would return, but alas, it wasn’t meant to be.

They showed up this week instead, pulling off a move reminiscent of W.C. Handy’s arduous journey to the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair — a year too soon.

The Red Sneakers’ mistake is Memphis’ gain: Tonight, the duo play Nocturnal (located at 1588 Madison Ave) with Digital Leather and Sector Zero. Doors open at 9 p.m.; admission is $5. If you go, be sure to stroll across the street to Murphy’s where River City Tanlines are playing a free show.

Tweets and Twits

I’m following all the mayoral candidates who Twitter. How they use this relatively new social medium is revealing and, in my opinion, offers some insights into the kind of mayor they might be.

AC Wharton (1161 followers) is a businesslike Twitterer, announcing his appearances, thanking supporters, etc. Many of the tweets are done by staff. All words are spelled correctly with proper punctuation. Like so: “Looking forward to taking part in the Rotary Debate on Tuesday, 10/6.” Wharton uses Twitter as an efficient — but dull — tool.

Charles Carpenter‘s Tweets (350 followers) are minimalist as well, but not as frequent as Wharton’s. Carpenter also eschews “text-speak”, shortened spellings, etc. Not much personality is revealed. Ditto Carol Chumney, (118 followers) who is an infrequent and boring Twitterer.

Myron Lowery (390 followers) uses Twitter similarly to Wharton, but links frequently to favorable media articles. While his Tweets aren’t exactly personable, one gets the sense that Myron does his own Tweets, a la: “CNN has published my views on the fist bump with the Dalai Lama. http://bit.ly/DHuch”

jerry-lawler.jpg

Jerry Lawler (6,146 followers, more than any candidate, though how many are mayoral followers and how many are wrestling fans is open to debate) definitely does his own tweets, using shortened words, etc. There are occasional typos, squeezed tweets — the mark of a man doing his own writing on the run, and on impulse at times: “Signed the @midsouthpeace pledge today to never forget & abandonen the homeless of Memphis. Help me fulfill my pledge with your vote!”

Then we get to the Boss of Twitter among the candidates: Rev. Kenneth Whalum Jr. (304 followers) Whalum is a BIG FAN of all-caps, exclamation points, and text-speak. He is by far the most entertaining of the legitimate candidates. He presents himself as a RENEGADE who’s leading the campaign for a MEMPHIS MIRACLE! He’s a prolific Twitter user. He’s also thin-skinned and prone to arguing with and blocking those who disagree with him. Whalum (or as I like to call him, WHALUM!!!) likes to complain about the media’s biased coverage and being left out of Channel 3’s debate. He exhorts his 300 or so followers with inspirational Biblical quotes and compares himself to Moses, Gideon, Maya Angelou, and other notables. Whalum would be a volatile but entertaining mayor, if his Tweets are any indication. He’s sometimes witty, but more often over-the-top, and borderline manic. You can’t ignore him. Definitely a hands-on kind of guy.

Here are a few samples of the wit and wisdom of WHALUM!!:
“A majority of Israelites polled thought they’d starve to death in the wilderness. Then it started raining quail.”

“”Rumble young Man, RUMBLE!” BTW, I’d wear the “frontrunner OUT in a REAL debate!”

“MAN I’m upsetting some status quo folks today! To paraphrase Maya Angelou: “Don’t let my haughtiness offend you.” It’s called INDEPENDENCE”

Like I said, FUN!

But the MOST fun is pseudo-Twitter candidate FakeMongo, imitator of candidate Prince Mongo (228 followers). After Lowery’s ill-advised fist-bump with the Dalai Lama, FakeMongo tweeted: “If I met the Lama, I wouldn’t greet him with crude gestures. I’d do the honorable thing and extend him the Zambodian penis of friendship.”

That’s only one example of the twisted madness of this anonymous wit. I don’t know who he is. I’m not sure I even want to know. (Yes, I do.) But you have to admire the man’s comic genius. I just hope he hangs around after the election. A few more examples:

“Says here in the city bylaws the mayor has to wear a shirt at all public events where booze is served. Checkmate, Mr. Lawler.”

“Show me on the doll where the mayor touched you, Mr. Lama.”

“Enjoying some flash-frozen gamma locust with Severed Head of Charles Carpenter. Wish we had some honey mustard for dipping!”

Gotta love this guy. I almost wish I could vote for him.

Catching Up with Craig Brewer

Craig-Brewer-82408108.jpg

Memphis filmmaker Craig Brewer is readjusting to his hometown after a long stay in Southern California working on the pilot to the FX network series Terriers. (Brewer on this Twitter feed this morning: “WAIT! Why wasn’t I told that a Chick-Fil-A was built on Union Ave since I’ve been away? Glory be to God!”) And good news has followed him home, as FX announced this week that Terriers has been picked up for a 13-episode season.

The show, a private-eye beach drama created by Ocean’s Eleven screenwriter Ted Griffin and produced by The Shield‘s Shawn Ryan, stars Donal Logue and Michael Raymond-James (who had a small role in Brewer’s Black Snake Moan). Descriptions of it suggest a promising shaggy quality reminiscent of ’70s series The Rockford Files.

Brewer says he hopes to continue his involvement in the series, but how many — if any — of the remaining first-season episodes he will direct is unclear.

On the Scene at the Pink Palace Crafts Fair

Yesterday I stopped by the Pink Palace Crafts Fair first-thing. There was already a line of cars waiting to turn into the park.

Ace Martin and Lois Stocker were making biscuits that would be baked in an on-site wood-burning stove.
