Gone not Forgotten: RECKLESS looked great at Rhodes, a Midtown coffee house went political

RECKLESS at Rhodes

  • RECKLESS at Rhodes

I exchanged some big openings this week for a chance to catch a couple of one-offs and re-evaluate an old favorite at an old haunt.

I first encountered Craig Lucas’ Reckless when I was a student at Rhodes and it was fun to visit with this darkly comic, distinctly American answer to Candide in the place where I discovered it. And Candide for that matter.

David Jilg’s gently surreal production effectively tells the story of Rachel a happy middle class wife and mother who goes on the run on Christmas Eve after her husband confesses he’s hired a hit man to kill her. Reckless was a belated Christmas treat that looked so good it was easy to get lost in the visuals and not notice that everything started at a fever pitch and stayed there. This is a show about a woman who can’t stop talking until, after enough horror, she finally does. The director almost has to be a conductor to pull it off. Still awfully glad I caught it before it went away. And sorry to have missed Hay Fever at the U of M, but Lucas’ work arrives less often and I just haven’t been in a Cowardy mood lately.

Housing and Homeless Survey

Getting citizens to show up at public meetings can be dicey.

“We’re required to have two public meetings a year,” says Memphis Housing and Community Development (HCD) planning administrator Mairi Albertson. “We don’t always get the level of participation we want, especially at the evening meetings.”

Every few years, HCD prepares a three-year strategy to submit to the federal government. That plan is based on a housing market analysis, a homeless-needs assessment, and community input.

“We wanted to find a way to get a little bit more from people and give them an opportunity to share their priorities with us,” Albertson says.

The result is an 12-question survey on homelessness, housing, and job creation. The survey is anonymous and will be used by the HCD to allocate future federal funding.

Each year, HCD receives 95 percent, or about $15.5 million, of its funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

To take the survey, click here. The deadline to do so is April 1st.

“The plan is due to HUD May 15th,” Albertson says. “Our goal is to have all the information from the survey and the research study so we can incorporate those into our plan.”

But if a public meeting is more your style, HCD will be hosting one Wednesday, April 7th, at 6 p.m. at the Benjamin Hooks Central library.

Citizens may also submit their comments in writing by mail or fax to:

Bianca Knows Best … And Helps a Conflicted Lover

Dear Bianca,

I have been friends with “Kelly” for five years. Although there has always been great chemistry between us, the timing has never quite worked. Anytime one of us was getting out of a serious relationship, the other would always be in a relationship, so we never dated.

Last year, she had an unplanned pregnancy. Now she’s with the guy, because she feels her daughter needs a father, but he is horrible to her. He constantly belittles her, has a bad temper, and does drugs and drinks around the child. She is miserable, but feels she is supposed to stay.

Several months back, we were hanging out and ended up sleeping together. It was an incredible night, and has been repeated several times. She says she loves me and has cared about me for years. She wants to be with me but says she can’t right now because she has to stay with her boyfriend for her daughter’s sake.

I don’t know what to do. I love her. Honestly, I’ve had feelings for her for years. I love her child too and spend lots of time with her. It’s hard to be only sort-of with Kelly, but I don’t want to give her up. Should I end this to save us both more heartache down the road? Should I stop sleeping with her but wait around to see if she leaves him? Should I continue things as they are?

— Looking for the Right Thing

Dear Looking,

It’s a shame you can’t make “Kelly” leave her baby’s lousy daddy. It sounds like he’s not exactly the sort of man who should be raising a child. However, if she decides to come around it has to be totally up to her. If I were a gamblin’ woman, I’d bet that someday she will grow tired of her boyfriend’s drinking and drugging and finally leave his sorry ass.

But it’s really not fair for you to have to sit around and wait for that day. Some women stay with horrible men for their entire lives. If Kelly is one of them, you’ll be old and wrinkled by the time you figure it out.

Have you talked to Kelly about your desire for a real relationship with her? Something beyond sex? If not, you need to let her know that if she’s willing to leave her man, you’d gladly scoop her up.

Help her to realize how great a relationship with you would be by going out of your way to do nice things for her, but let her know that you can’t wait around forever.

You should also assure her that you’d make a better dad than the baby’s biological father, since she might be concerned that you wouldn’t want to help raise her child.

Once you’ve expressed how you feel, the ball is totally in her court. Set a timeline in your own mind — a few months, perhaps. If Kelly hasn’t come around by the end of the deadline, it’s time for you to move on. And by move on, I mean, stop sleeping with her. Having sex is doing nothing but keeping both of you emotionally engaged in a situation that’s unhealthy.

I hope things work out in your favor. But if they don’t (warning: cliché coming up) there are certainly other fish in the sea.

Herrington and Akers on the Oscars, Part 2: The Supporting Actors

Up today, day two of this week-long Oscar revelry: the Supporting Actors. Here we go.

Christoph Waltz and Melanie Laurent, from Inglourious Basterds: One will win an Oscar, the other deserved a shot.

  • Christoph Waltz and Melanie Laurent, from Inglourious Basterds: One will win an Oscar, the other deserved a shot.

Best Supporting Actress
The Nominees: Penelope Cruz in Nine, Vera Farmiga in Up in the Air, Maggie Gyllenhaal in Crazy Heart, Anna Kendrick in Up in the Air, Mo’Nique in Precious.

GREG AKERS: Will Win: It would shock my socks off if Mo’Nique doesn’t win for her magnificently memorable role as the victimizing, victimized mother in Precious. The rest of the nominees shouldn’t even bother preparing an acceptance speech.

Should Win: I’m going to agree with the Academy here and give it up for Mo’Nique. I don’t necessarily ever want to watch Precious again, but I will never ever forget her performance. Terrifying, and bringing in the sympathy late in the movie. I didn’t see Nine, so shame on me. Maggie Gyllenhaal was okay in Crazy Heart but seemed a bit miscast and benefited much by star Jeff Bridges five-tool performance. Actually, I’m not sure how much I like Gyllenhaal as an actress. I find myself underwhelmed, again and again. Does that mean I’m broken? (Oh, except for Stranger Than Fiction, where I thought she was excellent.) That brings us to the Up in the Air actresses, Farmiga and Kendrick. Farmiga was excellent and held her own and then some against the George Clooney blitzkrieg of charm. Just about any other year, she’d be my favorite in this race. Kendrick kind of got lost in the shuffle for me amid the grown ups.
