Meet Lauren Mabon

Lauren Mabon is a belter.

For those of you in the vocal arts, I’m not talking about a mezzo-soprano (tho, for all I know, she might be that, too).

No, Lauren, the very stylish marketing and communications person for Leadership Memphis, like belts.

“I like to belt everything,” Mabon says. “Not only does it cinch the waist, it completes the outfit.”

The outfit, in this case, being a black pencil skirt that is actually part of an Ann Taylor “interview” suit but rarely gets worn as a suit, a gray cardigan from Express (please note the buttons on the sleeves), and a purple tank that is “actually a not-so-safe-for-work piece purchased from … ahem … JCPenney.”

“But it looks very appropriate layered underneath the gray cardigan,” she says.

Her accessories include the belt, silver BCBG heels, a metallic clutch that her aunt gave her for her birthday, and an XOXO watch that she wears to work everyday … even though it’s not set.

“This is my typical work day outfit: professional, yet somewhat chic and trendy,” she says.

Chumney Calls on Wharton to Disavow Interest in Being Metro Mayor

A little practical politics crept into what was otherwise a fairly theoretical exposition Tuesday on the work of the current Metro Charter Commission.

Julie Ellis, chair of the 15-member commission, had just finished a brief luncheon address to members of the Memphis Rotary Club at the University Club and was entertaining questions when up popped Rotarian Carol Chumney, who has run for city mayor twice and county mayor once.

Explaining that some time back she had attended a workshop with the mayor of a recently consolidated Louisville, one also attended by current Memphis mayor A C Wharton, Chumney said, “We both learned how Louisville did it.”

And here, said Chumney, was how: “Both the city mayor and the county mayor agreed not to run for Metro mayor. That took politics out of the equation. It made it a totally non-political discussion, and they were able to come up with a compromise that they needed, because nobody was positioning and posturing to run for the new Metro mayor.”

Chumney then asked Ellis point blank: Had the commission received any assurances from “our county mayor, candidates for our county mayor, and our city mayor” not to run for Metro mayor if the consolidation initiative should pass muster with the voters?

(Conspicuously, Chumney did not mention in her list former candidates for city or county mayor.)

Ellis explained that the commission had not asked for nor received such assurances and went through a brief recitation of essentially non-political discussions she had had on the consolidation process with Shelby County Mayor Joe Ford, Memphis Mayor Wharton, and Sheriff Mark Luttrell, currently a candidate for county mayor.

Chumney responded that she was aware of some “posturing to have the current mayor,” evidently meaning Wharton, run for Metro mayor. Instead, said Chumney, Wharton and those urging him to run” should step aside and do what’s best for the city.” Else she said, “they cold jeopardize the whole thing.”

In her formal speech, Ellis had reviewed several of the consolidation possibilities currently under review by the commission and attempted to be reassuring about the independence of Shelby County’s six “municipal cities,” saying, “We are not Venezuela, and we do not intend to nationalize them.”

She also stressed that “the first vote” taken by commission members was on behalf of keeping the school issue separate from any final charter.

2011 Hoops Forecast: Tigers Ranked…

24th??!!

Apparently, the nation’s top recruiting class will only take you so far. In his first — quite early — ranking of college basketball’s top teams for 2010-11, Sports Illustrated‘s Luke Winn has the Tigers clawing their way (barely) into the Top 25.

Update on Swanky’s 2nd Location

shapeimage_1.jpg

  • swankystacoshop.com

It’s been almost a year since Swanky’s Taco Shop announced they would be opening a new location in East Memphis. Various setbacks and snags pushed the opening date back so far that taco lovers were beginning to lose hope. When I saw that the temporary Swanky’s sign had come down yesterday, I feared the worst.

Call it an Easter miracle: while the flimsy tarp banner has come down, the Swanky’s logo will rise again.

Bianca Knows Best … and Helps With an Ex’s Jealous Girlfriend

Dear Bianca,

Last weekend, I celebrated my 26th birthday at a local restaurant. I invited about 20 of my friends, and most of them showed up, including an ex-boyfriend who I’m still friends with. He brought along his new girlfriend.

This guy and I have been apart for a couple of years, and we only dated about two months. We were never very serious, and we ended up breaking things off when we realized the romantic spark just wasn’t there. After the break-up, our relationship naturally shifted into a friendly one.

Things have been fine between us ever since, but he must have told his new girlfriend that I was an ex. Even though she showed up at my birthday party, she gave me the stink-eye all night. Her only words to me were a curt, “Nice to meet you.” Every time I tried to talk to her boyfriend, she shot me the death stare.

I’d like to remain friends with my ex, since he’s a pretty fun guy. But I’m not sure his new lady will allow that. He’s tried to call me a few times over the past week, and I’ve missed his calls. When I’ve called back, he doesn’t answer but I get a text saying he can’t talk while his girlfriend is around.

Should I just write my friend off and hope his new relationship ends soon? Or should I persist despite his bitchy girlfriend? After all, he was my friend first.

— The Old Flame

Dear Old Flame,

It sounds like this new girlfriend has your old buddy whipped. Unfortunately, some women can’t stand the idea of their partners being friends with the opposite sex, especially when those friends are exes.

It’s possible that your friend’s girlfriend has been cheated on in the past, and she’s dealing with serious trust issues. But since this relationship is new, she really should give him some slack and see if he’s trustworthy before she starts controlling who he can talk to.

If you can ever get your friend alone, you should let him know how his girlfriend treated you at your birthday party. Explain that you don’t want to lose him as a friend, but you’re not willing to put up with his girlfriend’s attitude. From there, the ball is in his court. He needs to tell his girlfriend to back off. If she continues to control his friendships, the relationship probably won’t last long anyhow.

If she agrees to give him some space, you should try to arrange a lunch or go out for drinks with her. Let her know that you have absolutely no romantic interest in her boyfriend. She’ll probably appreciate a one-on-one talk, and might learn to trust you.

Baseball: Suburbia’s National Pastime

dreamstime_2785161.jpg

I’d take Barack Obama in a pickup basketball game, based on his shoot-around with Clark Kellogg to hype the Final Four. But I’d pass on him if choosing sides in a pickup baseball game, based on his high-and-wide ceremonial first pitch at the Washington Nationals’ opener Monday. At least he got it to the plate.

More evidence that basketball and football have better claims than baseball on being the national pastime. Unless you are white and live in the suburbs or small towns, that is.
