Last week some of the world’s top conducting talent met in the Cannon Center and went baton to baton in the first Memphis International Conducting Competition. First-place prize went to Ken Lam, a native of Hong Kong who serves as assistant conductor for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.

Roger Kalia, a native of New York and music director of the Columbus Symphony in Indiana took the second prize.

Aram Demijrian, a conducting student at the New England Conservatory, won third place.

The three winners split over $11,000 in prize money and in October the three will return to Memphis to conduct pieces by Dvorak, Hindemith and Ravel with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra.

UPDATE: I’ve temporarily made these videos private. The musician’s union only allows two minute clips, so I need to edit these down a bit. I don’t know why I thought the competition would be different. Duh. Sorry.

Mirimichi Reopens Today

Justin Timberlake’s 27-hole golf course in Millington is scheduled to reopen today, after being closed for nearly a month due to flooding.

Before floodwaters rose, the Mirimichi golf course installed an aqua wall, an intertube designed to hold back floodwaters, around their state-of-the-art performance shop. However, there was nothing they could do to prevent flooding of the 7,400-yard golf course.

At the time, Director of Golf Greg King told the Flyer the golf course likely wouldn’t see too much damage from the flooding.

“We feel confident that, as the water recedes, the grass choices that we have are most tolerant to these conditions,” King said.

Mirimichi announced yesterday that the performance center reopens today, meaning they’re open for golf lessons, club fittings, and golf clinics. The on-site cafe is also open for business. The nine-hole championship golf course will reopen on June 24th, but the 18-hole course won’t be ready until late July or early August. A date will be set when they can better access how much repair is needed on the front nine holes.

Mark Your Calendar! Tigers vs. Louisville: December 17

The University of Memphis has confirmed that the basketball program’s most heated rivalry has been renewed. The Tigers will face the Louisville Cardinals on Saturday, December 17, as part of the 2011 Basketball Hall of Fame Shootout. The game will be played in Louisville and televised nationally on CBS, with tip-off at 3 p.m. central time. The Tigers will host the Cardinals during the 2012-13 season.

“Since I got this job two years ago, our fans have talked to me on numerous occasions about the Memphis-Louisville rivalry, and how much they want to renew the series,” said Memphis head coach Josh Pastner in a press release. “This is a great rivalry not only for the schools and their fans, but it’s also one of college basketball’s top rivalries. I have tremendous respect for Coach (Rick) Pitino and what he has done throughout his career and at Louisville. We are looking forward to an exciting and hard-fought game with the Cardinals.”

The December contest will be the 86th meeting between the rivals, with the Cardinals holding a 51-34 advantage in the series. The Louisville series is the second-longest in Tiger basketball history (behind only Southern Miss).

The 2011 meeting between Memphis and Louisville is the first since the two programs met in the 2005 Conference USA Tournament championship game. The Cardinals won that contest 75-74.
