Calling All Model Citizens!

Have you waited your whole life for a chance to be featured in the Flyer‘s Fall Fashion spread? You have? Well, then take the elevator to the Peabody Rooftop Party tomorrow at 6 p.m., and show us why you think you should model for us!

We will be there from 6 to 7 p.m. taking photos and learning more about our potential models. While this won’t be a paid gig, we’re sure a cameo in our Fall Fashion spread is worth some serious social currency:

Flyer Reader: “Did you see that hottie in the Flyer‘s Fall Fashion spread? I’d like to befriend him/hire him/date him/buy him a snow cone.”

See how this works?

If you can’t make it to tomorrow’s party, don’t fret! In addition to the May 24th Peabody Rooftop Party, we will be searching for models at the June 21st, July 19th, and August 16th parties.

So get your darling faces out there and be discovered.

Soulsville Charter School Plans for First High School Graduation

Stax Museum of American Soul Music

  • Stax Museum of American Soul Music

One hundred percent of the first high school graduating class of Soulsville Charter School have been accepted to college, and more than $3.2 million in scholarship funds have been donated to help them pay for higher education. Those students are graduating on Thursday, May 24th.

Founded in 2005, Soulsville Charter School is a tuition-free public charter school with a mission of preparing students for college success in a music-rich environment. It began with a sixth grade class of 60 students, and those students have now completed their high school careers.

Although the graduation ceremony is closed to the public, there is a Soulsville Charter School fund-raiser being held on Wednesday, May 23rd from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Stax Museum of American Soul Music featuring former Notre Dame basketball coach and ESPN host Digger Phelps and Grammy winner Kirk Whalum. Tickets are $250 per person or $400 per couple.

“Mr. Phelps was so impressed by the school, its students, and the model of education that he has become an unofficial spokesperson for us on the national level, often mentioning the school on news talk shows, particularly MSNBC’s Morning Joe,” said Tim Sampson, communications director for Stax and former Memphis Flyer editor.

Phelps will also hold a live remote broadcast about the graduation event on MSNBC’s Morning Joe. That broadcast will air on MSNBC at 6:45 CST on Thursday, May 24th.

To purchase tickets to the fund-raiser, call Soulsville Foundation chief operating officer Mark Wender at 901-261-6345 or email him.

Breaking: Obama Throws Football … Or DOES HE???

Just when you think the Obama-birther madness can’t go any deeper, comes a story today that Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio has dispatched forces to Hawaii to demand President Obama’s birth certificate. Ho hum, you say. Just another wacky waste of taxpayer money in wacky wingnut-riddled Arizona. Perhaps. And, well, of course.

bammerz-foosball.jpg

Then there’s this — a freshly released White House photo of President Obama tossing a football. Typical PR fluff, you say. A trifle meant to enhance the prez’s manly cred among the red-meat masses. Not so fast! What if it were PHOTO-SHOPPED!!?? Huh? Yep, a “pundit” over at the right-wing website Pundit Press has the real story. It’s fake, because of some suspicious pixels and the fact that BO holds a football differently than he holds a baseball. Yes. This happened. Makes Arpaio look sane. Almost. Don’t miss the comments, they’re hilarious.
