Make Memphis To Host Kick-Off Event

In December, entrepreneur Taylor Berger of Chiwawa and Yolo fame started a Facebook group with a goal of connecting Memphis people and bringing to action their ideas for making Memphis a better place. That group has since grown to include more than 1,300 members.

Make Memphis will host its first big public event this Saturday, February 8th from 4 to 6 p.m. Those attending will be asked to submit an idea for a project that could improve the city, and anyone who wants can pitch their idea for 90 seconds. Some of those projects will be included on ioby.org’s new Memphis website, where people can donate money to make the projects reality. Ioby.org is a crowd-source fundraising website, similar to Kickstarter, aimed at funding city projects.

Also at Saturday’s meeting, Make Memphis will form a business group of interested parties that will eventually host monthly meetings so entrepreneurs can share ideas and prioritize projects.

Attendees should RSVP on Eventbrite. Tickets are $5, but they will be refunded in the form of a gift certificate that can be used to find any project listed on ioby.org.

Senator Ophelia Ford

  • Senator Ophelia Ford

The Koozer-Kuhn Medical Cannabis Act would legalize medical marijuana for specific medical conditions through a Safe Access identification card process. The bill is featured as the cover feature “In the Weeds” in this week’s Memphis Flyer.

Write Me a Letter!

Internet killed the letter-writing star.

I wrote about my recent trip to a newsweekly conference in San Francisco. It was mostly concerned with web strategies and techniques for enhancing site traffic, but one evening after the sessions were over, a few editors gathered in the hotel bar to BS.

One subject got a lot of attention: Letters to the Editor. The problem being that the number and quality of letters to the editor has dropped precipitously in recent years. The reason is obvious: Why go to the trouble of addressing a letter to the editor, or even an email, when you can just blast away, anonymously or not, in the comments section?

Some papers have dropped Letters to the Editor entirely. Others have banned anonymous comments on their websites and now contact their commenters for permission to use their comments as Letters to the Editor. Some papers just pull comments off their website and run them as letters, even if unsigned or signed with a nom du web.

The Flyer is no exception to this problem. We get lots of letters, but not from a lot of different people. The same folks write every week, and it gets repetitive. And to be honest, some of the best (and some of the most entertaining) responses to articles happen in comment threads. But I don’t intend to print unsigned letters. I don’t think it’s fair to those being critiqued in print to not know who’s doing the criticizing.

So, though we’d like to continue to make the Letters to the Editor column a feature of the paper, it’s up in the air right now. Let me just say, if you’ve got an opinion or a viewpoint you think is important enough to write about on memphisflyer.com, please consider copying it, signing it, and emailing it to me: brucev@memphisflyer.com.

Brian Kelsey Sponsors Anti-Gay Bill

Brian Kelsey

  • Brian Kelsey

Senator Brian Kelsey of Germantown is sponsoring a bill in the Tennessee General Assembly aimed at protecting religious organizations that choose to deny services in conjunction with a civil union, domestic partnership, or gay marriage.

Kelsey’s SB2566 “permits persons and religious or denominational organizations, based on sincere religious belief, to refuse to provide services or goods in furtherance of a civil union, domestic partnership, or marriage not recognized by the Tennessee Constitution.” It’s being co-sponsored in the House by Representative Bill Dunn of Knoxville.

It’s not clear how far religious organizations could take this, if passed. But a post on the Tennessee Equality Project’s website poses the question of whether or not medical institutions run by religious organizations could refuse medical services to someone in a same-sex relationship.

The bill was filed on February 5th, and so far, there has been no further movement with the bill.

Jake Ingalls: Letterman, Lennons, and the Lips

Memphian Jake Ingalls is a touring member of the Flaming Lips. Last night, the Houston High graduate and the Lips played “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” on the David Letterman Show. The band was accompanied by Sean Lennon. For Ingalls, 22, it didn’t seem like a big deal after a few years playing music at the highest level. His band Spaceface has a Valentine’s Night show/food drive with Athens’ New Madrid at the Sanctuary that reveals strong roots in Memphis. See our Q&A below.

Memphian Does LSD on Letterman with Lennon

[jump]

Flyer: You had a big day yesterday.

Jake Ingalls: Yes sir. It’s been a big couple of days. We did Amnesty International before [Letterman]. We’ve done our load out three times in the last 48 hours. We pretty much didn’t sleep for three days. Amnesty International was with Yoko Ono, we played a song with her and her son. We loaded out from that and went straight to the David Letterman load in, and then into the Vance Warehouse in Brooklyn for a modern super-jam advertisement with Ben Folds. It was pretty cool.

What about the show here?

Valentines Day. We are doing a canned goods drive for the MidSouth Food Bank. We’re playing with New Madrid. We had this idea we should celebrate the relationship between these two bands on Valentine’s Day in Memphis. It’s at Cooper Walker Place. There’s a big sanctuary above the Abbey.

You’re on the road with a fun band. Talk about having to pack out.

Well Spaceface does a big production too. The Lips have been my favorite band since before puberty. It went ‘I want to be Bat Man’ to Willie Wonka straight into the Flaming Lips are the best band ever. It’s a dream come true. But growing up and watching them do crazy stuff all the time, it had a huge impression on me. I always knew when I started a band that I wanted to be more than a bunch of dudes standing there playing instruments. We have a pretty large rig. We have roller disco lights. Our guitarist’s dad had a friend who was a DJ in the ’70s and had this roller disco light that he gave us. Our friend Big Red sits behind the amps and keys it up when we are playing. I wouldn’t want to book a giant sanctuary unless we were going to do it up, and we’re going to do it up.

What’s it like playing with Sean Lennon?

We’ve played and hung out with him before. On my first tour with the Lips, his band was opening for a solid month. He was just hanging around. At first it was like ‘Oh my god, what am I supposed to say to that guy.’ Now it’s like he’s just a nice dude. He’s a good-spirited person.

You played with Tame Impala!

We were just in New York a month ago with them. That was a dream lineup. Then we did a tour with White Denim, Tame Impala, and the Flaming Lips. I kept telling those guys I had a dream when I was 17 that this show happened. But Ghost of a Sabertooth Tiger opened up those shows with the Lips and Tame Impala. Everybody was digging it.

[Tame Impala] are this really well-oiled machine. They’re all really tight, and there’s this clear focus on how the sound of every instrument is onstage and through the PA. Which is a crazy thing for me to see. It gives them their sound. The juxtaposition to me was hilarious. With the Lips, you plug something in and instantly Wayne says ‘Crank that shit up.’ Everything is at 11 all the time. It works for us. But it was insane watching Tame Impala. I was jealous of them. Not only are the one of the best bands that I’ve been getting into in the past couple of years, they’re also the humblest and coolest dudes I’ve ever met. It was insane to me how rad they were.

Justin Timberlake’s Memphis Mule

Memphis_Mule.jpg

Justin Timberlake’s Silver 901 Tequila label, launched in 2009, has been rebranded as Sauza 901.

Timberlake entered into a partnership with Beam Inc. earlier this year.

Sauza tequila is just one of the entities under the Beam Inc. umbrella, which includes Jim Beam Bourbon, Maker’s Mark Bourbon, Pinnacle Vodka, Canadian Club Whisky, Courvoisier Cognac, Teacher’s Scotch Whisky, Skinnygirl Cocktails, Cruzan Rum, Hornitos Tequila, Knob Creek Bourbon, Laphroaig Scotch Whisky, Kilbeggan Irish Whiskey, Larios Gin, Whisky DYC, and DeKuyper Cordials.

What that means to you and me is a considerable savings. In 2009, a bottle of Silver 901 was sold for about $50. Sauza 901 is $29.99 for a 750ml bottle.

About that Memphis Mule cocktail. The Sauza 901 folks shared with me and I’m sharing with you. It seems simple enough …

Memphis Mule

1 part Sauza® 901® Tequila

2 parts Ginger Beer

Juice of ½ lime

Preparation
Build over ice, garnish with fresh wedge of lime.
