Memphis mayor Jim Strickland announced his appointment for the city’s next chief financial officer in a statement Thursday.
Upon city council approval, Shirley Ford, who has served as the city’s comptroller since 2014 will take on the position that was vacated by Brian Collins in December.
“Shirley has served the city well as its comptroller and is highly qualified to be our next chief financial officer,” Strickland said. “As our CFO, Shirley will make sure the city remains on solid financial ground. She’s a great addition to our team.”
Before her role as comptroller, Ford spent time serving on the city’s pension board, healthcare oversight committee, and pension investment committee. She has more than 30 years of financial, accounting, and managerial experience, according to the mayor’s statement.
Receiving both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Memphis, Ford was then designated by the state comptroller as a certified public accountant and certified municipal finance officer.
“I am honored and humbled by the confidence this administration has placed in me to effectively serve in this role,” Ford said. “I look forward to working with our mayor, the senior leadership team and the city council to continue working for all Memphians.”
Until Ford’s position is confirmed, the city’s chief operating officer, Doug McGowen will serve as interim CFO.
