Bob Corney, a spokesman for the pawn-shop lobby, seems to think that the TBI s
report concerning the amount of stolen goods recovered from pawn shops is an
exaggeration. Noting that the number of Tennessee burglaries is on the
decline, he was quoted as saying, Why don t they [the law, presumably] focus
on spousal rape, or some other crime that is on the increase? It s an
excellent suggestion, and we d bet a zillion dollars (if gambling were legal
in Tennessee, that is) that if there were some type of organized business with
a long history of criminal involvement where people could go to rape their
spouses in complete anonymity, the TBI would get right on it.
