SECRET SERVICES

Shortly after publishing a story about Jim Rout, Tom Jones, and Kevin Kane’s $25,000 visit to Austria on the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau’s tab, the CVB filed suit the block The Commercial Appeal from gaining further access to its financial and travel records. The publicly handed CVB offered a private-sector excuse for the action. According to an AP story, they aren’t trying to hide credit-card receipts or travel-reimbursement checks from the media to cover up any possible impropriety. They just want to keep their financial information away from potential competitors. Besides, it’s impossible to know what might happen if such sensitive materials fell into the hands of terrorists.
