There are plenty of art openings tonight, but one stands out. The Memphis Grizzlies and the National Civil Rights Museum are partnering this year to celebrate Martin Luther King s birthday, and tonight at the museum there s a special reception for the exhibit They Cleared the Lane: African-American Basketball Pioneers, an exhibit of artifacts, documents, and multimedia presentations, which focuses on the history of African-American participation in the NBA (more events to come). Tonight s other art openings are at: Rhodes College s Clough-Hanson Gallery for In the Sweetness of Time , works by David Dunlap; Midtown Artist Market Gallery for a show of hand-painted silk works by Nancy Taylor; Delta Axis Contemporary Arts Center, in Marshall Arts Studio for Dis (miss)ed, works by seven Mississippi artists in various media; and there s a closing reception at Sip, Coffee & Conversations for an exhibit of works by Nancy Stephenson. Down in Tunica, The Temptations are at the Horseshoe Casino. And here at home, there s a big party at The Lounge with Nu Soul of Lounge featuring DJs Carlos Moore & Brad Johnson. Brian Webb, Native Son, Elliot Ives, and Patrick Dobb are at The Map Room. Automusik along with the Memphix DJs are at Automatic Slim s. Di Anne Price & Her Boyfriends are at the Blue Monkey. And Blind Mississippi Morris and The Pocket Rockets are at Neil s.
