Forget the invasion of the telemarketers and the much awaited do not call list legislation. I want to see a law enacted that prevents political advertising, media coverage, campaign signs, televised debates and all the rest that goes with it. Much of this is due to the fact that I can t turn on the television without seeing A) stupid commercials every five seconds for the gubernatorial election in Mississippi, an election that has little bearing on Memphis because despite what some people think, Memphis is not in that state. But worse is the constant barrage of images and invasive posturing of that idiot, Arnold Swarzenneger in California. The Gropenator. He s a bad actor and always has been. And he is just plain ol flat out gross. I d rather see the porn star on the midget lesbian nun with three eyes or any of the other of the hundred-plus candidates win. And shame on Maria Shriver for thumbing her nose at her Democratic Kennedy family roots to root for this rotten Republican husband of hers. But the point of the matter is that we don t live in California so who cares? Just like we don t live in Mississippi. I happen to live Mississippi and California both, but the commercials are ridiculous. Mercifully, by the time this paper comes out the California election will be over, though the news stations will likely still be on it like flies on you-know-what until some other sensationalist thing comes along. And speaking of which, where are the on-screen interviews with Rush Limbaugh s former housekeeper who claims she supplied him with thousands of illegal pain pills during the four months she worked for him? Now, that is news worth watching. I want the details. What kind of pain pills? How did she get them? How many does or did he take a day? Is that why he is so insane? Does he have any left? Does he know Noell Bush? He needs to come run for office in Memphis. Oh, yeah. Memphis. Seems that we have a little election here ourselves this week. Just the mayoral and city council and several judgeships and little things like that. But you won t see too many commercials about that because all of the media time is being taken up with commercials for the governor s race in Mississippi. All I can say is, ban political advertising for good and vote for Pat Vanderschaff s hair. In the meantime, here s a brief look at some of what s going on around town this week. Tonight, the Playwrights Forum production of Cymbals and Sounding Brass opens at TheatreWorks, while June Moon a comedy set in the 1920s opens at the University of Memphis. And Dwight Yaokam is in concert at the Horseshoe Casino.
