Radio personality Janice Fullilove, who has some serious problems with Craig Brewer’s film Hustle & Flow, told WREG, “It’s yet another black exploitation type of film that we saw so many times … during the sixties. … People already think Memphis is a backwater river town. It will just further their perceptions.”
She says Brewer’s loving warts-and-all depiction of low-rent Memphis neighborhoods filled with low-rent pimps selling dime bags to bums is, “like a slap in the face to all of the work that’s been done. And I hope people can make a distinction between what’s reality and what you see on the golden screen.”
Fullilove — who must wear a blindfold when she travels through Orange Mound — may have some trouble making those same distinctions in this sprawling city where teeth are gold and screens are silver.
