Hot on the heels of Memphis Police Department director Larry Godwin’s visit to New York City last month to learn how the NYPD do what they do best, another contingent of Memphis public officials is heading to the Big Apple on a fact-finding mission. This time the object of study is New York’s top-notch parks system.
Shelby County commissioners Mike Carpenter, J.W. Gibson, James Harvey, and Deidre Malone, Director of Public Works Ted Fox, Chair of the Shelby Farms Master Plan Committee Rick Masson, and Laura Adams of the Shelby Farms Park Alliance are all New York-bound. After arriving in New York January 10th, they will tour Central Park, Prospect Park, and Bryant Park and will meet with park and city officials.
The delegation will be looking for advice and ideas for turning Shelby Farms into a park on par with New York’s finest. The County Commission approved a conservation easement for Shelby Farms on December 18th, protecting the land from private development. What happens next with the park has yet to be determined but, according to Carpenter, the goal is for it to be “one of the greatest in the world.”
