October 6, 2006 is not a date that most Memphians will soon forget. That morning, as the city awoke to its newspapers and coffee, four historic structures were ablaze in the worst fires downtown has ever seen. Two different three-alarm blazes, coupled with a strong wind, blew burning embers across city blocks like so many comets.
But in those early morning hours, more than 200 of the city’s firefighters not only got those blazes under control, they did so without a single loss of life. A miraculous feat, to say the least. Read all about the night that Memphis burned, and find out from the men and women who were at the front lines exactly how they accomplished this daunting and potentially deadly task.
Also in this issue, from winning the Miss America pageant to swimming the Mississippi River, find out “What it Feels Like.” We also check out the French-Asian fare at Lee Kan’s, find the latest trends in bling, and explain just who in the hell the “Monkey Man” of Memphis is.
