Nobel Peace Prize winner Betty Williams will speak at the University of Memphis at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, in Room 136 of the Fogelman Executive Center. The event is free and open to the public.
Williams was co-recipient of the 1976 honor with Mairead Corrigan for their efforts to bring peace to Northern Ireland. She and Corrigan co-founded Community of Peace People, an organization dedicated to promoting a peaceful resolution to problems in their native Northern Ireland.
Since winning the Nobel Prize, Williams has received numerous honors, including the Schweitzer Award for Courage, the Martin Luther King Jr. Award, and the Eleanor Roosevelt Award.
Williams heads the Global Children’s Foundation and is president of the World Centers of Compassion for Children International. She also is chair of the Institute for Asian Democracy in Washington, D.C., and a distinguished visiting professor at Nova Southeastern University.
