Philip Spinosa Jr. is resigning from his position on the Memphis City Council to join the Greater Memphis Chamber staff, the Chamber announced Friday.
Spinosa will serve as the senior vice president of the Chairman’s Circle, whose mission is to “make Memphis great by leveraging the collective strengths of the business community to create a clear path to positive change across the Mid-South.”
Spinosa calls the position an “opportunity of a lifetime.”
“I am humbled for the opportunity to work with this visionary group of leaders who are invested in moving Memphis forward,” Spinosa said. “The work of the Chairman’s Circle is critical to our community.
“From increasing women- and minority-owned business receipts to funding Pre-K education to making our streets cleaner and safer, the Chairman’s Circle membership is committed to paving the way for our city’s forward progress.”
Per Chamber policy, staff cannot run for or hold public office while employed by the Chamber.
“While Chamber staff members are encouraged to be active politically in the party of their choice, no staff member may be a candidate for any political office while employed by the Chamber,” Apryl Potter, the Chamber’s director of brand strategy and integrated communications, said.
Spinosa will also be resigning from Fedex, where he has worked in sales management for 25 years. On the city council, Spinosa has served as the chairman of the personnel and public safety committees, as well as the vice chair of the budget committee.
