A night of booze, fancy buffets, and plenty of friends is always fun. But it’s even better when youre tippling to support a charity or nonprofit organization.
Toast to live performing arts at the annual Wine and Roses Gala, a fund-raiser for the Germantown Performing Arts Centre. As the name implies, the event features a wine tasting, as well as live music by pianist Pnina Becher. It begins at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
The proceeds from Cocktails for a Cure at the Madison Hotel on Saturday go toward research on Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a debilitating form of muscular dystrophy that typically confines kids to wheelchairs by the time they reach age 10. The Cocktails for a Cure gala features a special appearance by documentary filmmaker Darius Weems, who filmed Darius Goes West (a documentary on the disease). The event begins 7 p.m.
Before you hit the parties, spend Saturday commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. on the anniversary of his death. The National Civil Rights Museum has planned a day filled with activities including a march, a sanitation workers salute, a youth rap event, a neighborhood clean-up, and a candlelight vigil. Activities run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the museum.
