A fabled gem and the fabled isles of Atlantis. An apprentice magician and 13th-century English folklore. Dragons and wizards and … what’s this? … the curse of the pharaoh’s manicurists. Fables, faeries, and folklore etc. may be the stuff of sci-fi and fantasy, but the “curse” belongs to Angelia Sparrow and co-author Naomi Brooks. Their novel The Curse of the Pharaoh’s Manicurists crosses the paranormal with the archeological, and it travels from London to Paris to the tomb of Ni-ankh-khnum and Khnum-ho-tep, overseers of the royal fingernails in the palace of the king of Egypt. (And speaking of fantasy, the book is also a gay love story between a Dartmouth grad and a World War I flying ace.)
What’s all this have to do with what’s on tap this week? Sparrow is one of seven local writers who will be discussing and signing their books at Davis-Kidd’s second annual DK Con — three nights; seven authors total. On Tuesday, July 6th, meet A. Christopher Drown (A Mage of None Magic) and former managing editor for Marvel Comics Roland Mann (Buying Time). On Wednesday, Davis-Kidd welcomes Herika Raymer (WTF Mysteries), H. David Blalock (Ascendant), and the poet Windsong Levitch (The Lighter Side of Dark). And on Thursday, Sparrow will be joined by M.R. Williamson (Pragamore; Krypendorf).
“Last year, we had nine authors in one day for DK Con — a very successful event,” said Christina Meek of Davis-Kidd. “To make things a little more organized, I spread the events over a three-day period. I wanted to make sure we had some new faces.”
