Mickey Klenz, a Dedicated Activist, Passes

Klenz was felled by a rare breakthrough case of Covid-19.

One of the most honored and loved women in public life will be laid to rest this week. Mickey Klenz, matriarch of the Klenzes, a family of dedicated Democratic activists, had been vaccinated earlier this year, but was felled by a rare breakthrough case of Covid-19, presumably the much-feared and resurgent Delta variant.

Klenz, 87, was a mainstay of the Germantown Democratic Club and served four years as president of the Shelby County Democratic Women group. A dedicated supporter of  Mothers of the Nile, which worked with at-risk children, she was selected Mother of the Year in 2016. A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, she leaves her husband of 71 years, Dick, and three children, Vicki, Rick, and Jan.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Wilson Chapel of Christ United Methodist Church at 4488 Poplar Ave, followed by the funeral at 11 am.

Entombment will be at Serenity Columbarium and Memorial Garden, 1662 Sycamore View Rd., Memphis. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Camp Chambers, which teaches life skills to Mid-South youth; or to Planned Parenthood.

The family requests that masks be worn at the funeral events and that social distancing be maintained.
