As Jeff Woods of the Nashville Scene reports, officials from Vanderbilt University were summoned to the Tennessee legislature today to defend the university’s right to have its own police force.
If you’re saying, “Huh?”, you’re not alone. But there you go. Seems members of the Christian right faction in the state House are ticked at Vanderbilt’s “no exclusion” policy, which mandates that no campus organization, including religious ones, can refuse to accept gay members.
What does this have to do with the university’s campus police force? Absolutely nothing, as far as I can tell. The fundies just want to punish Vanderbilt for its polices, and trying to take away the university’s police force seems to be the way they’ve chosen to do it.
