Those familiar with Memphis’ underground rap scene during the ’90s have more than likely heard of Tommy Wright III. The Whitehaven Blackhaven representative is arguably one of the city’s best lyricists to spit jarring tales about being immersed in an illicit lifestyle and the consequences that come with it over crisp, drum-ridden production.
One of my favorite tracks by Tommy is titled “One Man Gang Pt. 1.” I came across the cut after purchasing his Genesis album back when I was a youngsta. Listening to it years later, the song is a reminder of gangsta rap’s golden era and the sound that Memphis contributed to it. Stream the track below.
