Finally! City Candidates Can Get their Petitions

After a lengthy pre-campaign period that has already featured no few theatrics and ballyhooed events for candidates, several of whom have already raised prodigious sums of money, it is at last possible — as of Friday — for would-be participants in the 2015 Memphis city elections to draw petitions of candidacy from the Election Commission.

Given the amount of attention (and speculation) already visited upon hopefuls in this year’s election process, today’s petition availability is expected to draw media people, political junkies, and rubberneckers to the Commission’s downtown offices in something like the proportions that used to be associated with filing deadlines.

For the record, the filing deadline for this year’s city positions is July 17, with the withdrawal deadline set for one week later, July 24. Early voting will begin on October 14, and the final Election Day will be October 8.
