WMC Action News 5 anchor Ursula Madden left her post at the station Monday to be the Chief Communications Officer with Memphis Mayor-Elect Jim Strickland’s office.

Madden has been with the station for 17 years. She’ll start her new role at Memphis City Hall on January 1.

Co-anchor Joe Birch said Madden has been a “splendid partner.”

“We’ve been blessed to share the anchor desk at WMC Action News 5 since 2009,” Birch said in a stamen. “We’ve done 5000 newscasts together and Ursula has been a splendid partner and has become one of my dearest friends. She is a first-rate journalist and a highly competent professional who will now bring her many gifts to the service of our great city”

Madden graduate from the University of Oregon and worked at a station in Eugene before starting work at WMC in 1988. In 2009, she joined Birch on the anchor desk.

Madden is an Emmy Award winning journalist and serves on the board of trustees for The Church Health Center and St. Mary’s Episcopal School for Girls.

Strickland also recently named Doug McGowen, current head of the Mayor’s Innovation Delivery Team, to be the city’s Chief Operating Officer.
