More than 11,000 Memphis Light & Water customers remain without power Thursday morning after a storm moved through the area Wednesday evening.
The storm knocked out power to about 54,000 MLGW customers Wednesday at around 7: 30 p.m. Restoration for customers still without power “will be more time consuming due to the fact that these are smaller outages with severe damage,” MLGW said.
Crews are working back to back shifts and the utility predicts power will be fully restored to all customers by Saturday.
MLGW urges anyone without power to report the outage at its outage hotline at (901) 544-6500. Also, those customers should find a cool location like a mall, library, senior center, or movie theater, as the heat index is expected to reach more than 105 degrees Thursday.
The city of Memphis has opened an after-hours cooling center at the Pipkin Building (940 Early Maxwell) at the MidSouth Fairgrounds. The center will be open thursday from 6 p.m.-7 a.m.
