The home at 1370 Mississippi Blvd. was demolished Wednesday morning thanks to the Blight Elimination Project.
The state’s Blight Elimination Program (BEP) got officially underway Wednesday morning as officials demolished the program’s first blighted home here.
The Tennessee Housing Development Agency (THDA) launched its $6 million BEP here last year. Under the program, nonprofit organizations get forgivable loans to buy abandoned, foreclosed homes, tear them down, and transform the property into a community park or affordable housing.
THDA began accepting application for the program in November. On Wednesday, state and local officials and some from the U.S. Department of Treasury (which funds the program), joined at 1370 Mississippi Boulevard to watch the demolition of the house there.
That demolition was thanks to Memphis-based United Housing Inc., which was the first nonprofit to get one of the BEP grants.
