The site of a parking garage at Front and Monroe is being considered as a possible new location for the Brooks Museum of Art.
Officials wth the city and the Downtown Memphis Commission (DMC) want to take stock of Downtown parking and predict parking there through the next decade.
The two agencies issued a request Friday for companies to study existing parking Downtown, predict parking needs over the next 15 years, and to create a Downtown parking system and master plan.
“The results of the Downtown parking study will help the DMC and the Downtown Parking Authority (DPA) make better future decisions for how best to leverage public parking as a tool to attract investment, increase density, and support future development Downtown,” said Jennifer Oswalt, interim DMC president.
The study will yield recommendations on areas of Downtown that need more parking, and the number of spaces needed to meet future demand. The selected company will also create a formula to inform parking decision-making in the future.
“The DMC looks for strategic opportunities to use public parking as a catalyst for unlocking the development potential of vacant buildings and underutilized properties,” said Brett Roler, the DMC’s vice president of planning and development. “Adding new density and supporting redevelopment and investment Downtown is a high-priority for the DMC.”
