Against Me! at the Hi-Tone Cafe

The members of the dynamic Gainesville, Florida, punk-rock quartet Against Me! are no strangers to controversy. For the last decade or so, the band’s musical evolution from twangy folk-punk to anthemic post-punk, as well as numerous line-up changes (behind bandleader Tom Gabel) and label affiliations, have been pored over and dissected by a legion of hardcore, bordering on obsessive, fans. Last year was no different for Against Me! It saw the band release its second album for major label Sire Records — the excellent, Butch Vig-produced White Crosses — to undeservedly mixed reviews, as well as the cancellation of several months of scheduled tour dates due to “unforeseen circumstances” and the severing of ties between the band and Sire altogether. Now the band is finally back on the road in support of White Crosses and trying out new material as it looks toward 2011 without a record label (for the moment). Against Me! plays the Hi-Tone Café Saturday, January 22nd, with Cheap Girls and Fences. Showtime is 9 p.m., and admission is $13.
