“Every woman has an ‘alter ego.’ A confident, sexy side. My job is to help bring it out of you.”— boutique owner Jada Blair

“It’s in there. I know it,” Jada said to me on my first visit to her boutique Alter Ego as she pulled a few daring outfits that would bring out my alter ego.

Trying on a one-shoulder, skin-hugging jumpsuit, I peered at myself in the mirror surprised at how good I felt. Let’s just say it was not conservative or boring in the least. As with many other customers, Jada was thrilled to play her part in boosting one’s confidence. She’s made it a point to help women of all sizes find what looked great on them. One part of the boutique is dedicated to plus size fashion.

Alter Ego Fashionz opened its doors two years ago in the Uptown district downtown. “I’ve always wanted to open a boutique, and I just decided to stop waiting for the right time,” Jada says. She just recently left her 9 to 5 job to run the boutique full time along with launching a Memphis “photo booth“ business called PicturePod with her business partner Joy Lockridge Ross. Stocking the boutique with plenty of special event attire and party wear and marketing the photo booth business to parties and events of all sizes, Jada has in essence found a way to harness her fun energy to bring alive her dream career.

Jada has also made it a goal to keep fashion affordable, offering her customers a chance to make suggestions of what items to carry. Of course, she is thrilled to offer any style advice. With Beale Street Music Fest in mind, I spotted several items on my latest visit that work great for any outdoor event. In the slideshow below, you’ll see funky sunglasses, rompers, and graphic tanks.

Jada also offered up her tips for outdoor festival style. “Think about comfort first. Make sure shoes won’t give you blisters, shorts aren’t too short that cause you to pull them down all day, and things that don’t require constant adjustments. Ideas: Romper, tank with shorts, maxi dress, flats, tennis shoes, sandals or combat boots. Let’s not forget stylish shades and hat to block the sun.”

Visit Alter Ego today and tomorrow till 7pm at the corner of Chelsea and Danny Thomas Boulevard.
