According to a story in The Christian Observer, as a chemistry student at Rhodes College (then Southwestern) in the 1960s, Bruce Parker was so broke he sold his blood plasma three times at $10 per half-pint. But poverty was ot meant to be his lot. After inventing a lightweight material for splinting broken limbs, Parker became a multimillionaire almostovernight — and a huge philanthropist. In fact,the gave away $6 million in charity. But the pendulum has swung back again. betweenhis generous gifts and some bad investments, Parker is now $3 million in debt. Thank goodness for those plasma-donation skills he picked up at Rhodes.
