Flyer Fall Fashion

Just like the autumn weather, fall fashion brings change. And like the temperature drop, the new looks and styles of fall will be most welcome. Ironically, as our blazing summer temperatures finally cool, the colors of fall arrive to warm us up all over again. Elsewhere, fashion trends are dictated by designers and their runway models, but in Memphis, our style is authentically idiosyncratic.

We selected this year’s Flyer fashion models at the Peabody Hotel’s summer Rooftop Parties, and the final four brought their own style to our shoot. We mixed that up with a balance of vintage pieces and fresh-off-the-runway looks — along with a generous serving of Memphis grit.

The shoot took place on Summer Avenue in the Propcellar building, a brick-and-ivy edifice that feels very SoCal. Just as Memphis music is a gumbo of soul, rap, and punk, the city’s — and our models’ — fashion sense is a patchwork of sophistication and funk. Enjoy.

Fall Fashion: Painter’s Palette

Memphis is trending, and not just because the city is finally enjoying some civic love. Crushing on anything Memphis has been in style for a while. Fashion in Memphis is bright, colorful, sharp — a perfect match for Birdcap’s new mural at Midtown’s Eclectic Eye. Color takes over in the artwork as explosions of different hues form imaginary beings in an engaging fantasy water scene.

“Street art serves as a cultural connector to other cities,” Birdcap says, describing how he’s seen images of Memphis’ murals on far-flung Instagram and Facebook accounts. “That has one of our walls in it. It says Memphis in the description. I think that’s huge … that’s a new Memphis hallmark.”

Robbie Johnson Weinberg, director of operations at Eclectic Eye and patron of this particular piece of public art, has her own innate sense of style and played the perfect hostess to our group of models (scouted from the Peabody Rooftop Parties) and behind-the-scenes crew. “I’ve always had a huge appreciation for and interest in the arts, specifically in Memphis,” says this one-time art history major. “The products we carry are truly works of art for your face. Every day, we get to help our community express their sense of fashion and style through eyewear; it’s an exciting and fulfilling job.”

Local retailers are loaded up with great fall clothing, and the biggest, brightest trend is color … and having the personality to pull it off. Artists like Birdcap and art supporters like Weinberg are key elements in keeping Memphis moving in a forward direction. Fall fashion here in the Bluff City is confident and reflective of what some good self-pride can do for the heart, soul, and mind. It is our time to shine, and the next few pages are proof that inner style is all about surrounding yourself with expressive design through the arts — painting and fashion and life in general.

Fall Fashion in Memphis

Fall fashion always ushers in change as the temperatures drop. The air is crisp, the sun shines a little brighter, and the moon glows a little more intensely. The earth tilts on its axis, shortening the days and extending the nights. Nothing represents this dichotomy better than the biggest trends for fall fashion — black-and-white combos, sharp tailoring, and the mixing of masculine and feminine details.

Our models were selected from a series of Peabody Rooftop Party model calls, and we really got a lively bunch this year! Everybody worked hard, played hard, and showed off some really great clothes — all from local retailers. It’s fall fashion, done Flyer style.

Into the Woods

The Old Forest trail in Overton Park was the setting for this year’s Flyer fall fashion shoot. Volunteer models were once again recruited from Peabody rooftop parties. They spent the day with us, taking time off from work or school, weathering the unseasonable heat in stylish togs of wool, denim, and silk from some of our favorite local retailers. The location lent itself to storytelling and woodland fairy-tale fantasies.

Getting to spend the day at Shelby Farms Park is fantastic, but getting to spend the day at Shelby Farms Park and working on the annual Memphis Flyer Fashion Issue is a dream. This year’s models were chosen at a Peabody Roof Top Party and were enthusiastic about the gig and the location: the colorful Woodland Trees Discovery Playground. Fall style trends are inundated with color, which was the overall theme for this shoot. With help from local retailers, we were able to outfit our models in some of the best fall fashion available — full of color and lots of great accessories too. Fun models, a perfect day, and great clothes — just the right mix for some day-dream fashion.

Fall Fashion on Beale

Never has fall fashion been so colorful and whimsical. The serious tones of black and grays have made way for deep blues, oranges, greens, and plums. Taking this cue, we thought this year’s Fall Fashion Issue would be best served by showing how Memphis Flyer readers wear these trends. After hosting several model calls, we selected from those who volunteered. We spent a beautiful day on Beale Street showing how street fashion is worn by real readers just like you.
