Doc’s Rare Whiskey & Chocolate Tasting

On Monday at Doc’s Wine, Spirits and More hosted a rare whiskey and chocolate tasting. Antique Collection Bourbons were paired with some of the finest chocolate in the world from Phillip Ashley Chocolates and To’ak. There was also live music, wine, and delicious hors d’oeuvres from Porcellino’s to kick everything off.

If I had to pick, my two favorite bourbons from the flight were an 18-year-old rye Sazerac and a 20-year-old Pappy Van Winkle. The Pappy Van Winkle was nice and smooth as it went down. I was surrounded by a group of people that are a part of a bourbon club and they showed me how to properly taste all the bourbon. It was a lot of fun!

As for the chocolate pairings, they were delicious and creative! It was a limited edition holiday collection, so there was a bit of everything — Gingerbread Man (gingersnap maple), Spiked (rum egg nog), Winter Kiss (peppermint marshmallow crème), The Patch (pumpkin spiced latte), Checkmate (chess square truffle), and Santa’s Sleighed (pecan liqueur). I liked them all but loved the Winter Kiss — so refreshing.

Then I was fortunate enough to try To’ak. A single chocolate bar sells for $260 dollars. It was featured in Forbes as the “World’s Most Expensive Chocolate.” You don’t experience something like that every day, especially when Doc’s is only one of six places in the world that you can get it! It was what I was looking forward to all night.

There were 28 spots for this event and it sold out quickly. Join Doc’s newsletter at docsmemphis.com or sign up in their store to learn about more events like this in the future! Don’t miss the next one!

Sly’s South Main Burger at the Green Beetle

I just had the most amazing burger at The Green Beetle and I need to tell you about it. It’s called the Sly’s South Main Burger ($12), and it’s larger than your head! The burger has hash browns that are cooked inside the patty. Then on top of it there’s bacon, cheddar cheese, and an egg cooked to order — all on a sourdough bun. I got my eggs scrambled.

The patty itself is juicy and full of flavor. I loved the hearty consistency and feel of the hash browns mixed with the juiciness of the patty. The bacon is soft and sweet, not crunchy like you would expect it to be. I loved that the bacon was cooked this way, especially because it made it much easier to eat. The cheddar cheese was perfectly melted and the scrambled eggs were hot, creamy and smooth. It warmed my tummy! I didn’t see onions in the description but they were on my burger and they were crispy and almost seemed caramelized. The sourdough bun to top everything off was nicely toasted and sweet. This amazing burger was messy to eat but I didn’t care, I dug right in. The French fries were well seasoned and just as great.

I must warn you… the burger is huge. It will be a challenge to eat the entire thing in one sitting because it’s so filling. I couldn’t finish it. I’m not complaining though, because that just meant I had leftovers for the following day. Two meals for the price of one? I’m down.

Muddy’s Santa Baby Cupcake

Christmas is here and they’re celebrating at Muddy’s Bake Shop by giving us the Santa Baby Cupcake ($2.25). It’s chocolate cake, pink peppermint buttercream, and peppermint candy sprinkles on top.

When you’re handed the cupcake you immediately smell the peppermint. On the first and second bite, I found myself repeating the word “interesting.” It’s like nothing I’ve ever tasted before. My friend who was visiting from out of town said the same thing and exclaimed, “I’ve never tried something quite like this before.”

The pink peppermint buttercream is the first thing you taste. It’s creamy, airy and has a strong peppermint taste. The peppermint candy sprinkles on top was fun to crunch on against the opposing textures of the cake and buttercream. The chocolate cupcake itself is just that, chocolaty, but only a hint of that peeks through.

If you love peppermint, the Santa Baby cupcake is for you! Only available for a limited time.

Peppermint Devil’s Food Cake Donut at Gibson’s

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Proof: Gibson’s donut of the month, The Peppermint Devil’s Food Cake Donut is here!

For just $1.14, you get a very creative donut made up of devil’s food cake with vanilla icing and pieces of peppermint on top.

On the first bite, the donut is crunchy and soft. Fun in my mouth! I love how the crunchiness of the peppermint mixes with the smooth texture of the vanilla icing. You immediately taste the peppermint and then you get hit with the actual donut. The devil’s food cake is airy, slightly chocolatey and I almost tasted a hint of gingerbread, though I’m not sure if there’s any in there. It’s very light and goes well with the flavor of the peppermint. I ate the donut nice and slow to make sure that I enjoyed every bite because, honestly, it tasted like Christmas.

The Peppermint Devil’s Food Cake Donut is only going to be around for the month of December so if you want to try it you have to get to Gibson’s Donuts ASAP. Also, make sure that you go early. When I stopped by at 10 a.m., the donut was already sold out. The Peppermint Devil’s Food Cake Donut is worth waking up early for.

Hog & Hominy’s Johnny Snack

Sunday Funday Brunch has been a staple at Hog & Hominy, and they’ve added some new items to the menu in the past few months. One of the newer dishes is the Johnny Snack ($15), a smoked pork chop with a fried egg, polenta, and bloody mary sugo.

Yes, this dish is as amazing as it sounds. The pork chop is sweet, juicy, and fatty. Normally I wouldn’t eat the fatty parts of my meat, but I LOVED the fatty parts on this pork chop! It all melted in my mouth. The ends of the pork chop were charred and I was expecting to not like it. Wrong! It created a great “smoked” type of taste to the meat. The fried egg was creamy and went down smoothly. The polenta was creamy as well and cheesy. It was delicious. The bloody mary sugo tasted like a light, airy version of Tabasco sauce. It was delightful. I didn’t think everything would go together well. Wrong again!

This dish is Southern comfort at it’s finest. I’ll be back for Sunday Funday, and for the Johnny Snack!

Doing Downtown Dining Week at Felicia Suzanne’s

Downtown Dining Week ended on Sunday. Hopefully, you took advantage of the opportunity to try some of Memphis’ best restaurants for a great price. I sure did! This was my chance to try Felicia Suzanne’s for the first time.

The menu provided plenty of options to choose from. I started with the BLFGT Salad. It’s baby greens tossed in remoulade sauce with crispy bacon, a spoonful of Flo’s Pickled Jalapeno Pimento Cheese and a fried green tomato. The salad is very fresh. The fried green tomato is crunchy, crispy and juicy. The bacon is from Porcellino’s and it was savory and delicious. As for the pimento cheese, it was just how I liked it… creamy and yummy.

Then it was off to the second course. I went with the Sunday Sugo. It’s Claybrook Farms beef and Newman pork over Hanna Farm’s Stone Ground Grits with a rich Italian red sauce. It’s a nice portion of meat and the red sauce was light and tasted like tomatoes. I felt like I was eating a ten times better version of ravioli without the pasta. The beef and pork were hearty and the grits creamy. The dish was very well done.

The third course was all about the white chocolate coconut bread pudding with Pritchard’s Rum Sauce and spiced cream! I’d say that the rum sauce was the star. It tasted like rich caramel and brown sugar. Also, you can easily taste the coconut flakes inside the bread pudding. The bread pudding was rich but not excessive.

Bedrock’s Pork Enchilada Omelet

When your trainer tells you to try a place that has great healthy food, you listen. That’s how I heard about Bedrock Eats and Sweets. They know that eating right can also be fun and satisfying. All of their food is organic and gluten free.

I went with the pork enchilada omelet ($11.50). It has spiced pulled pork and caramelized onions, organic cheese, avocado and homemade enchilada sauce. Not only is this dish low-carb, it’s delicious. The pork was tender and filled with flavor. There was a lot of it too. The omelet itself was huge! There was just the right amount of cheese and it wasn’t overly gooey. As for the homemade enchilada sauce, it was light and refreshing. I couldn’t finish the whole meal and had to save the rest for later.

Blind Bear’s Jager BBQ Bologna Sandwich

Have you tried Blind Bear’s Jager BBQ Bologna sandwich ($12)? It’s “bear rub” bologna on white bread with Jager BBQ sauce and Southern slaw. The sandwich also comes with a side of pepper jack mac and cheese.

The white bread is nicely toasted and the bologna is thick and juicy. There’s a lot of Jager BBQ sauce on the sandwich and if you like things sweet, this is the perfect meal for you. I wish that there were one more layer of the  bologna because I wanted more meat! I couldn’t have the slaw because there are almonds in it, but I brought someone along with me to taste it. They described the southern slaw as crunchy, pickled, and a mix of sweet and spicy.

As for the side of pepper jack mac and cheese, it was enough to feed an army. A star on it’s own — gooey, creamy and spicy. Delicious!

Double J’s BBQ Eggrolls

I’ve been hearing about Double J’s BBQ eggrolls ($7) for a while now, and I finally got to try them.

First of all, wow… they’re big! On the first bite I was instantly impressed by how well fried the eggrolls were. I know that sounds odd to say, but it’s true. The eggroll wasn’t too chewy or crunchy when I bit into it. The pulled pork was hearty and flavorful. The coleslaw was light and delicious.

I also need to point out Double J’s original BBQ sauce. It was recommended that I eat the eggroll with it and what a good tip. The sauce amazing. It’s mainly sweet with a hint of spiciness to it.
