Catherine & Mary’s unveiled its new summer menu recently.

But don’t worry — certain favorites — Sunday Meatballs, the Cheese Plate, the lamb and veal, and the Rigatoni, etc. — are still available.

The new menu features an asparagus plate with artichoke, creme fraiche, horseradish, brown butter, and white cheddar; scallops with pork cheek, green tomato, cucumber, ramps, strawberry, and benne seeds; gnudi with watercress, sugar snap peas, basil, and panna gratta; and NY strip with bordelaise, asparagus, green garlic, tomato, and mustard greens. Pop-a-Roo’s Introduces Gas Station Nachos!

Pop-a-Roo’s recently introduced its Gas Station Nachos at its Crosstown Concourse stand.

“People in the Concourse asked us would we consider it, and I told them no,” says Ephie Johnson, Pop-a-Roo’s owner.

But then she thought about it and decided what the heck? It fit in well with Pop-a-Roo’s concession stand aesthetic.

Pop-a-Roo’s sells (the best) gourmet popcorn, hot dogs, icy drinks, and Kool-ickles (pickles made with Kool-Aid).

The stand opened in the Concourse in March.

Johnson says the nachos — chips and stadium-style cheese, with additions of barbecue chicken, and jalapeños if requested — are a perfect snack for those who are not ready for a meal but want a heavier snack. The nachos mimic what you might find in a gas station. They not good for you, for sure, but worth every bite.

Nachos run from $3 to $4. They are available Wednesdays and Fridays only.

Johnson says she’s working on expanding her business and has a deal brewing that could be a potential game-changer.

Right now she’s focused on keeping her customers happy. “We’re trying to strive and learn and make it right,” she says.

Beer and Bagel Run Set for June 8th

The Beer and Bagel run was birthed 25 years ago in Omaha, Nebraska. The first year, a couple dozen ran, but it has grown from there and is now expanding into other cities.

The first Memphis Beer and Bagel Off-Road Race will be held on June 8th.

Joe Dann has been charged with transplanting the run to Memphis. It will be held on the Wolf River Greenway and is four-ish miles. The specific route is a surprise.

There will be surprises during the race as well. Hint: It’s Sasquatch!

So what does Sasquatch have to do with running, beer, and bagels? “He just loves it,” answers Dann simply. And the runners love getting their pictures taken with him too.

And where does the beer and bagels come in? Runners will be able to carb-load post-race on Dave’s Bagels and beer from Wiseacre.

The swag bag is pretty cool, too, says Dann. Runners get a medal and a runner’s long-sleeve T-shirt.

Proceeds benefit the Wolf River Greenway.

Dann says finding the right cities is crucial to expanding the concept. Dallas for example was deemed too large. But Memphis is just right.

“We were looking for a city that was looking for us,” Dann says.

Gibson’s Donuts at U of M? Not So Fast

It was all a misunderstanding, says Britton DeWeese of Gibson’s Donuts.

It was announced earlier this month that food services at the University of Memphis would be taken over by Chartwell Higher Ed, which promised to shift focus on local food. Part of that deal would be bringing Gibson’s Donuts to the University of Memphis campus.

“I just thought they were trying to set up an account where they could get donuts regularly and just sign a ticket and get billed once a month,” he says. “[The Chartwell rep] never said anything to me about selling them on campus.”

Having someone else sell a Gibson donut is never going to happen, according to DeWeese.

The situation got out of hand when U of M president David Rudd tweeted the (fake) news.

DeWeese says his phone blew up. He isn’t really hooked into social media, so his friends sent screen shots of the Rudd’s tweet.

“So that’s how we found out what they wanted to do,” he recalls.

DeWeese says Gibson’s is not set up for such a venture. And they would never allow it.

He says it just wouldn’t work. If the donuts were bought directly from Gibson’s that would mean the donuts would be handled twice, which is unappealing, and they would have to be sold for more money. This doesn’t make sense to him since the donuts are available relatively close to campus on Mendenhall.

Having someone bake their donuts themselves wouldn’t work either, according to DeWeese.

“It’s just not that kind of product,” he says. “We don’t have recipes, we don’t have a scale or a measuring cup in the donut shop. Making dough is an art form. It’s not like baking cookies. You can’t just put a pound of this and a pound of that and come out the same every time because the weather affects the dough.”

“We’ve learned through experience if you want it done right, you’ve got to do it yourself. And we can’t be in two places at once, which is why there will never be two Gibson’s. It’s not about quantity, it’s about quality.”

Again, DeWeese characterizes this as a misunderstanding between the parties.

DeWeese says of Rudd’s tweet, “It surprised us. I guess he kind of jumped the gun.”

Updated: A spokesperson for the U of M says that they are still in negotiations with Gibson’s.

Tokyo Grill to Open in Midtown

Tokyo Grill will open its seventh location in Memphis in the old Shang Hai space at 1400 Poplar near Cleveland.

The first Tokyo Grill opened on Park in 2011.

Expect the same menu, says owner Aaron Liu. “It’s the same style, same concept,” he says. The large menu offers Japanese fare such as bento boxes, sushi, hot pots, noodle dishes, tempura, and more.

Liu says he had been wanting to expand into Midtown for a while now. He looked on Madison but said parking is pretty sparse for businesses on that street.

The 1400 Poplar space has lots of parking and is in a highly visible spot. But Liu says he’s had to do a lot of work on the building — new appliances in the kitchen, a new roof, new paint on the exterior and interior.

One thing he’s keeping are the red tiles on the ceiling. “They’re antique, unique. You can’t buy them anymore,” he says. “They are artwork.”

The plan right now is to open in the next couple weeks. Liu says that they’ve already passed all inspections but he needs time to rest and get ready for the new restaurant.

“You have to love your customers,” Liu says. “My customers gave me the chance to grow my restaurant.”

Memphis in May Attempts to Break a Record

You hear? Memphis turned 200 this year (doesn’t look a day over 129), and it’s time to celebrate.

Enter Memphis in May’s Celebrate Memphis, a day-long event, doing just that with fireworks, plenty of live music with local acts, cornhole, a drone show, and an attempt at a Guinness World Record.

They are looking to blow up the previous record for the World’s Longest Picnic Table. Robert Griffin, director of marketing for Memphis in May, notes that the table will use some 18,000-plus yards of wood and 53 pounds of nuts, bolts, and washers.
We recently asked Griffin for more deets on the picnic.

How did the picnic idea come about?
We wanted something big, unique, and symbolic for a 200th birthday celebration, and the idea of everyone being invited to Tom Lee Park for this community picnic piqued the curiosity of our Vice President of Programming, Susan Elliott, and she researched the requirements for building the World’s Longest Picnic Table that will allow all the communities of Memphis to come together around one table to share a meal. We loved the symbolism of that, and apparently so has the city because the response to it has been tremendous!

How is the table going to be set up? Will it circle around, double back?
Originally, we wanted a U or J shape so if you were on one side and your friends were on the other, you wouldn’t have to walk all the way to the end to get to the other side! Unfortunately, Guinness regulations require that it be in a straight line, modeled after a commercially-available design, so it looks like a standard table with bench seating — only four football fields long!

What will the food situation be?
Guests are invited to bring their own sack lunches, coolers or picnic baskets (subject to security check, of course), or purchase food from local concessionaires in the park. One of the Guinness requirements is that people must be picnicking at the same time at the table for it to qualify, so we’ll be making an announcement around 5:15 to get everyone to the table by 5:30 so our record-setting table will fulfill the people requirements for certification.

What makes the perfect Memphis picnic?
That’s very subjective, but if it’s mine, it has pulled pork (with slaw for the sandwiches), baked beans, potato salad, deviled eggs, and either a lemon icebox pie or simply sliced strawberries and vanilla ice cream for dessert.

Laser shows at Sharpe Planetarium

“It’s really much, much more intricate than it was before,” says Dave Maness of modern laser shows. Maness is Sharpe Planetarium Supervisor at the Pink Palace Museum and as such is in charge of the museum’s laser shows.

This week, the planetarium will host its Fab Friday show featuring a Laser Tribute, Laser Genesis, and Laser Led Zeppelin.

“Back in the ’70s and early ’80s, they used a lot of incandescent effects and psychedelic-like liquid lights,” he says. Since then, technology has advanced. The motors are faster, smaller, and lighter, and the laser power is greater, with sharper colors and more intricate designs.

Dark Side of the Planetarium

Maness says back when he started at the Pink Palace in 2006, there was a large water-cooled laser. He was shown the Elvis laser show, and then that laser went kaput, never to laze again.

Laser shows are now computer programmed, though Maness notes there’s always an operator there to give the show a little extra flash.

Along with the improvements in laser technology, the music has been upgraded as well, with shows dedicated to Beyonce and shows that include music from Miley Cyrus, John Legend, Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato, Lady Gaga, and the like. They still dust off the old Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon, from time to time, of course. “Pink Floyd has to be involved,” Maness says. “It’s the quintessential group for lasers.”

For Maness, laser shows are like a more intense fireworks display. “It’s hard to put into words if you haven’t seen it,” he says.

(Updated) Fino’s to Open June 6th

Fino’s, the beloved Italian sandwich shop, will reopen on June 6th.

The restaurant will be open 7 days a week and offer breakfast and a coffee program.

Kelly English announced back in March that he would be taking over the Midtown Fino’s. He will not operate the East Memphis location, which will remain closed.

Here are some more points of interest:

• Classic menu items will be kept, but with the addition of breakfast items and pizza
(pizza may not roll out first day though)
• There will be a few opening events – one specifically for Fino’s
super fans (we will hold a contest online for that). 50 people will be
invited) to try menu items.
• Fino’s will have an updated look, but it will still feel very familiar to Fino’s regulars.
