Cashman
Gene Cashman is out as CEO and president of the Urban Child Institue (UCI).
A statement from UCI leaders Thursday said Cashman will retire from the nonprofit organization.
The statement is from UCI board chairman Dr. Hershel “Pat” Wall, who is also a former chancellor of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and is now a special assistant to UT president Joseph DiPietro.
The statement was delivered from Memphis marketing consultant John Malmo.
Here’s the statement:
“Dr. Hershel P. ‘Pat’ Wall, on behalf of The Urban Child Institute board of directors, announces that Eugene K. Cashman, Jr. has shared his plans to retire as president/CEO of The Urban Child Institute, effective January 1, 2016.
Dr. Hank Herrod will assume the role of acting president/CEO of The Urban Child Institute for the immediate future.
The board would like to thank Mr. Cashman for his many years of service to The Urban Child Institute.”
Malmo said Cashman and the administrative committee of UCI’s board of directors agreed in 2014 that Cashman would retire in 2016.
Wall did not respond to follow-up questions regarding the move.
When asked if Wall or any other UCI board members would respond to those questions, Malmo said, “Beats the hell [out of] me. Seems pretty simple to me. Cashman said two years ago he would retire in 2016, and he is. Hell, he’s 75 years old.”
Cashman was contacted by phone Thursday morning but had no further comment.
UCI has been criticized in Memphis for sitting on a large investment and giving little of the money to area nonprofit organizations. UCI has also been criticized for paying Cashman a handsome salary. Read about all of it in our story from this summer.
