Chefs & Toys

On November 15th, the local chapter of the March of Dimes will hold its annual fundraiser, Signature Chefs Auction.

Last year, area chefs created dishes inspired by toys. That proved so popular that they’re doing it again for this year’s event, and the national organization is considering hooking its (toy) wagon to the concept.

A few weeks back, Erling Jensen of Erling Jensen the Restaurant, Rick Farmer of Jarrett’s, and Kelly English of Restaurant Iris gathered at Jarrett’s to pose for photos to be used for the event’s promo materials.

A behind-the-scenes look at the shoot are below.

Swanky’s Opening 2nd Location

When Matt Wilson opened Swanky’s Taco Shop four years ago in Germantown, Mexican food got a little bit classier.

“People have come to like Swanky’s because of the fresh Tex-Mex food and the slightly upscale atmosphere,” Wilson said. (The tasty margaritas and more than 60 types of tequila available help, too.)

Because of the success of the Germantown location, Wilson is opening a second restaurant.

Electric Fourth

f5de/1246562713-georgeforeman.jpgSome years, back I was at a holiday cookout, when the host wheeled out an electric outdoor/indoor George Foreman Grill. I almost lost my g-d mind!

Isn’t the point of outdoor grilling getting that great smoky taste while keeping the dangerous fire outdoors?

Anyway… there are a few Fourth of July sales, and one of them involves an electric grill.

Banana and Other Stuff Smoothie

When the temperature hits triple digits, I, like most Memphians, seriously consider moving to Antarctica for the summer and/or taking up residence inside a deep freezer. However, since neither of those options is viable, I turn to other cool activities, like taking cold showers and drinking smoothies.

No such thing, he’s reassured.

The good news: Elmwood is already taking reservations for the next event on October 30th.

Tonight’s bill of fare includes recipes from Being Dead is No Excuse: The Official Southern Ladies Guide to Hosting the Perfect Funeral by Gayden Metcalfe and Charlotte Hays.

Mason Jar Dressing

balljar.jpg
When I was a kid, Mason jars comprised a large part of my family’s kitchen. My mom used them to pickle cucumbers, dill, and garlic from our garden. She followed a special family recipe that had been passed down to her by my great-grandmother. The pickles turned out perfectly… just the right amount of salt, vinegar and crunch.
