What We Listened to this Week: Leon Bridges

Leon Bridges might say he’s from Fort Worth, Texas, but one listen to his debut album Coming Home and you’d swear Bridges was a product of Memphis and Stax Records. Coming Home, his debut album for Columbia Records, is made up of ten timeless songs that feature an authenticity that can be hard to find in the soul revival that’s taken place over the last few years. Sitting somewhere in between Sam Cooke and Otis Redding, Bridges has seen his music take flight over the past year, selling out shows across the United States minutes after tickets go on sale. One can only hope a Memphis date is in the near future. Check out two songs from his debut album below, plus a pretty cool Sam Cooke cover.

Cory Branan at the Levitt Shell

This Saturday, July 4th (U-S-A! U-S-A!), the Levitt Shell will host a homecoming gig of sorts for the immensely talented singer-songwriter and former Memphian Cory Branan.

Branan is currently riding high after the release of his most recent LP, last year’s critically acclaimed The No-Hit Wonder, and a long, successful tour run that included a string of dates with Justin Townes Earle. And while most of Branan’s live shows tend to be of the solo/acoustic variety, he has something special planned for his upcoming appearance at the Levitt Shell:  a full-band performance featuring two local all-stars – bassist Mark Edgar Stuart and lead guitarist Steve Selvidge – alongside drummer Robbie Crowell, a Nashville musician who is best known as the keyboard player for the indie-rock group Deer Tick.

“It’s actually been a personal goal of mine to play the Shell,” says Branan.  “I’ve had so many good times there over the years. I’m really impressed with what they’ve done with the place.”

Here’s the 3-D video for The No-Hit Wonder‘s lead single, “You Make Me”:

Disco Donnie Partners with New Daisy, The Palace

Skrillex, one of the artists Disco Donnie has booked in the past.

Disco Donnie Presents, the award-winning, electronic dance music (EDM) event production company has signed a partnership agreement to become the new EDM booking partner and event producer for the New Daisy Theatre and The Palace. Owned by SFX, Disco Donnie Presents is the largest EDM promoter and producer of live events and entertainment content worldwide.

This partnership marks another major step forward in the development of East Beale Street for partners Steve Adelman and JW Gibson. DDP produces over 1,000 club events, arena shows, and outdoor festivals worldwide each year, headlined by such acts as Tiesto, Skrillex, Calvin Harris, David Guetta, Steve Aoki and Avicii.

In a press release issued on Tuesday night, JW Gibson, a native of Memphis and partner of the development projects, noted the strong role East Beale will play for the downtown community.

“With the inclusion of DDP in the mix, we have taken another important step in realizing the potential of downtown Memphis as a diversified entertainment destination on a local, regional and national level,” Gibson said.

Currently under restoration, the New Daisy Theater will have capacity for over 1100 patrons, VIP viewing areas, a smoking patio, along with newly designed bar areas and expanded restroom facilities. Once completed, The Palace will be able to house 2,400 patrons.
