Local Beer Brewed for Lucero Family Picnic

Memphis Made’s All Sewn Up English Pale Ale, brewed in honor of Lucero.

Memphis Made has done it again. After brewing the Guitar Attack IPA for Goner Fest 11, the folks at Memphis Made honor another Memphis music institution with the All Sewn Up English Pale Ale. Named after a song on Lucero’s debut album, All Sewn Up will be available at the Lucero Family Picnic, The Madison Avenue Growler Shop in Cash Saver, The Young Avenue Deli, and the Memphis Made Tap Room in Cooper Young. It won’t be around forever, so act fast.

According to Memphis Made’s Andy Ashby, All Sewn Up is an English Pale Ale (5.7 percent ABV) brewed with Target hops (a UK variety) and has a restrained bitterness with a bit of earthiness and spiciness. Sounds good to me! Check out “All Sewn Up” below, then get to the Lucero Family Picnic by 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 18th.

Whirr and Wildhoney at the Hi-Tone Thursday

Wildhoney play the Hi-Tone this Thursday night.

Whirr and Wildhoney play the Hi-Tone this Thursday, along with locals Gryscl and Neev. Wildhoney released their debut album this January, and the entire record can be streamed below. Sleep Through It expands on two excellent 7-inches and one cassette EP, drawing influences from ‘60s girl groups, ‘80s post punk, indie pop, and shoegaze. Fans of Dolly Mixture, Shop Assistants or Cocteau Twins should take note.

Not a band to take a lot of time off, WIldhoney has already announced that a follow up EP will be released this summer on Top Shelf Records. Headlining the show is Whirr, a Bay Area shoegaze band that’s been making noise since 2010. Whirr has worked with Tee Pee Records and Graveface Records, and toured with like-minded individuals Nothing. Check out the title track from Whirr’s 2014 album Sway below, then get to the Hi-Tone by 9 p.m. on Thursday with $10 dollars in your hand.

Golden Pelicans at Murphy’s Wednesday Night

The Golden Pelicans from Orlando, Florida.

There’s a banger going on tonight at Murphy’s, featuring The Golden Pelicans, Spray Paint, Unholy Two and Ex-Cult. The Golden Pelicans have rolled through town before, but this might be the best bill the band has played on in Memphis. Add Austin, Texas natives Spray Paint and Columbus, Ohio’s Unholy Two and you’ve got a helluva show on your hands. Check out songs from each of the bands playing tonight, then make it to Murphy’s before 9 p.m. because apparently the show is running on “school night time” tonight.

What We Listened to this Week: Vatican Dagger

The first single from Vatican Dagger came across my desk just in time for Good Friday. Released by Orlando label Total Punk Records, this single is short and sweet, featuring two blasts of treacherous punk rock, similar to the demo recordings of the now-defunct Connecticut band Guilty Faces. Hailing from New Orleans, Vatican Dagger features Gary Wrong (FKA Captain Beyonce) of the Gary Wrong Group and Wizzard Sleeve in addition to members of Necro Hippies. The A-side “Not To Be” isn’t that far removed from the type of scuzzy punk that the Gary Wrong Group creates, but B-side “The Mess” shows Vatican Dagger have more than a few tricks up their sleeves.

Josh Miller

Vatican Dagger playing a recent show in Orlando, Florida.

The artwork for the single was created by Wrong’s daughter Orb, and it’s a safe bet that she’s probably the only kid at her day care designing punk single covers. Total Punk Records has been cranking out the hits for a couple years now, so if Vatican Dagger gets your blood pumping be sure to check out the rest of the Total Punk Roster.

The Achtungs Live at the Buccaneer

The Achtungs play the Buccaneer tomorrow night, the only Memphis show on the band’s east coast tour. Hailing from Finland, The Achtungs play bruising punk rock in the vein of The Weirdos, Crime and even Memphis’ own The Reatards. Simply put, this is one of the best punk bands to come through Memphis in quite some time. The Nervous Ticks and Gimp Teeth round out the bill. The show starts at 9, don’t sleep on this one.

What We Listened to this Week: Stax Soul Singles Vol. 3

This week was all about the Stax Soul Singles Box set, a 10 disc retrospective that the Concord Music Group was nice enough to release. Volume 2 covers 1968 through 1971 and this box covers 1972 through 1975. Both volumes feature stalwart Stax R&B artists including Isaac Hayes, the Staple Singers, Rufus Thomas, Johnnie Taylor, Carla Thomas, the Bar-Kays and William Bell, as well as bluesmen Little Milton, Albert King and Little Sonny, and “second generation” Stax hit makers like Jean Knight, the Soul Children, Kim Weston, the Temprees, and Mel & Tim.

What We Listened to this Week: Stax Soul Singles Vol. 3 (4)

While Volume 2 of this collection focuses on the era when Stax was forming its own identity, Volume 3 covers a very different era, one of success and excess, right before Stax was on the verge of shutting down. During this time period the label recorded a wealth of of different styles of popular black music, ranging from jazz and easy-listening to the blues and even the beginning stages of disco.

What We Listened to this Week: Stax Soul Singles Vol. 3 (2)

In 1976, faced with involuntary bankruptcy and an unsuccessful distribution deal with CBS Records, Stax was forced to close its doors. In his liner notes for Vol. 3, compilation co-producer Bill Belmont writes, “Stax’s difficult and inglorious end in no way diminishes its vital contributions to rhythm and blues and soul. Today, the music of Stax maintains a strong and steady presence, heard continually in cover versions by major artists, in movies and on television. Simply put, the Memphis Sound lives.”
