This Sunday, March 1, Lafayette’s Music Room will host the official release party for local singer-songwriter Mark Edgar Stuart’s latest album, Trinity My Dear.
The past few years have seen Stuart transform himself from a trusted sideman with numerous well-known Memphis acts – most notably, The Pawtuckets, Jack Oblivian, and John Paul Keith – to the celebrated frontman of his own project. The moment of ignition came in March of 2013, when Stuart unveiled his debut recording, Blues for Lou. The album was heavily lauded by both critics and fans, myself included.
Now Stuart is back with his sophomore effort, Trinity My Dear – a highly personal and touching collection of songs which Stuart says was inspired by “life, love, and disappointment.” The album is truly fantastic, and so too should be Stuart’s appearance at Lafayette’s on Sunday.
We’ll have a full interview/feature on Stuart in the print edition of next week’s Flyer, but in the meantime, take this advice: go to the show. You’ll thank us later.
And just in case you need further convincing, here’s a great clip which very few folks have seen of Stuart performing (mostly) the new material in the lobby of local ad-agency Red Deluxe:

Memphis was a better place when Cities Aviv was part of our music scene. Now that he’s moved to Bushwick, New York I can’t help but miss the mind-bending performances he used to put on around town. Lucky for us, The Fader just premiered two excellent new songs. Check them out, as well as our feature on him here. If you feel like jumping on a plane, he’s playing at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in New York City tonight.
Jazz guitar great Bill Frisell will play at Rhodes on Thursday night. He will be joined by trumpeter Ron Miles, drummer Kenny Wollesen, and bassist Tony Scherr. The group will perform the soundtrack to the film The Great Flood. Director Bill Morrison eschewed dialog in his depiction of the 1927 flood of the Mississippi. The flood is considered a driving force in the migration of African Americans out of the South throughout the mid 20th century. The film relies on the soundtrack that Frisell composed along with Morrison. The event is sponsored by the Mike Curb Institute for Music at Rhodes College. It starts at 7:30 p.m. in the McCallum Ballroom at Rhodes.

Memphis Musician Pat Taylor passed away Wednesday after a long battle with cancer. A Memphis songwriter for more than five decades, Taylor played in the influential bands Village Sound, The Breaks and The Highsteppers, among others.
The Breaks were Taylor’s most successful project, landing a deal with RCA records and a top forty hit with the song “She Wants You.” The Breaks were also named the “Best Local Rock Band” by the Commercial Appeal in 1982. Taylor went on to work at Ardent Studios as a recording engineer and frequently performed around town with his family. Read an old interview with Taylor in which he discusses The Breaks and the Memphis music scene at the time.
There will be a memorial service for Pat Taylor Friday afternoon at St. Johns United Methodist Church in Midtown at 3:00 p.m. Those wishing to donate to the Taylor family in their time of need can do so here.
