Freakin’ Weekend Six

For the past six years, the collective known as Nashville’s Dead has thrown the pre-SXSW party of the year with their annual Freakin’ Weekend event. The festival boasts some of the biggest names in garage rock (The Black Lips, Jacuzzi Boys and Ty Segall have all played), and also allows some of Nashville’s best local bands to strut their stuff.

The three day, multi-venue festival is a perfect opportunity for Memphians to get acquainted with the burgeoning music scene in Nashville, and with pop-up shops, food trucks and after parties, there’s a lot to take in. Nashville’s Dead recently announced the initial lineup, with a second slew of bands presumably coming soon. Check out the insane video of Jeff The Brotherhood playing Freakin Weekend IV (and the trippy Black Lips footage) to get acquainted with the freak show, then make plans for a road trip to the capital city March 12-14. Oh yeah, if you act fast the three day pass is only $40.00. As always, the festival is dedicated to Nashville’s Dead founder Ben Todd, who passed away in 2013 at the age of 24.

JPK To Lead Thacker Mountain Radio Band

Memphis-based telecaster encyclopedia John Paul Keith will lead the band for Thacker Mountain Radio, a syndicated public-radio show that is taped weekly before a live audience in Oxford Mississippi. Since 1997, Thacker Mountain Radio has broadcast the voices (the singing AND reading kinds) of Mississippi and the South. The band, known and the Yalobushwackers, has had some notable leaders, including Jim Dickinson and Georgia folkster Jake Fussell, who released his solo debut album, Paradise of Bachelors, last week.

Those familiar with John Paul Keith know that he is a quick-witted student of stage banter and has a gift for the Twitter. He has roots in the area through the label Big Legal Mess, which has released three of Keith’s albums.

Thacker Mountain Radio tapes and broadcasts on Thursday evenings and rebroadcasts on Saturday nights on Mississippi Public Broadcasting, FM 90.3 in Memphis..

Flashback Friday: Lou Reed at Ellis Auditorium 1973

Next week marks over 40 years since Lou Reed played the Ellis Auditorium with Garland Jeffreys. Reed made more trips to the Bluff City after this concert, but seeing the late New York City icon in the early 70’s must have been an amazing experience. Check out some of Reed’s solo work from that time period below along with a classic Garland Jeffreys track, and If you have flyers, photos, or stories from legendary Memphis concerts for future “Flashback Fridays,” shoot me an email.

And while you’re feeling all nostalgic, check out this awesome essay by Ron Hall on the artists that came through Ellis Auditorium during this time.
