Best of Memphis 2015: Staff Picks

Sections: Introduction | Food & Drink | Nightlife | Arts & Entertainment | Media | Goods & Services | Staff Picks

Hattiloo Theatre

Best New Cultural Amenity: Hattiloo Theatre

The Hattiloo Theatre recently completed its first season in its new custom-built home on Overton Square and is currently celebrating a 10th anniversary. Since arriving on the Square the Afro-American-centric theater company has maintained its focus while partnering with groups like Indie Memphis and New Ballet Ensemble. Perhaps, more importantly, it’s become home to regular panel discussions and forums about culture, history, and social justice. From zero to institution in 10 years is impressive. And if this first year in the new space is any indication, the best really is yet to come. — Chris Davis

Best Burger: The Oshi Burger

I don’t eat hamburgers all that often, but when I do, I like to do it right, so I go to the Oshi Burger Bar downtown and order the Oshi Burger ($12). This thing is ridiculously good: wagyu Kobe American beef dressed with a soy glaze, shiitake mushroom tapenade, Swiss cheese, and umami mayonnaise. Banzai! — Bruce VanWyngarden

Best New Band: Chickasaw Mound

Made up of members of the Sheiks, Blackberries, and Aquarian Blood, Chickasaw Mound deliver soulful garage rock like no other band in Memphis. Singer Jesse Davis is one of the most promising local front men in recent memory, and his backing band of seasoned players speaks for itself. Save this band’s debut single because it’ll be worth a small fortune one day. — Chris Shaw

Bass Pro

Best Ride: Bass Pro’s Elevator

If you haven’t taken the nation’s tallest free-standing elevator to the top of the Bass Pro Pyramid yet, now’s the time, now that the summer crowds have thinned. It costs $10, but there are drinks and appetizers awaiting at the top — along with an incomparable view of Memphis and the Mississippi River. — BV

Best Neighborhood to Impress: South Main

South Main has everything you need to blow an out-of-town guest away when visiting Memphis. The hauntingly cool Earnestine & Hazel’s, the historic Arcade Restaurant, the hip Love Pop Soda Shop, and all of the amazing local boutiques like Hoot + Louise help make a Memphis day and evening a memorable one. If you want to show someone what Memphis is like, take them down to the arts district, especially on the last Friday of the month — you won’t regret it.
Alexandra Pusateri

Best Future Site for a Public Art Graveyard: The Greensward

Every city that has the bravery to commission public artworks should have the discretion to also designate a “Public Art Graveyard” where, when bulky artworks wear out their public welcome, they can be gracefully retired. The Public Art Graveyard would be an open space where children and animals could roam peacefully amidst statues glorifying questionable people, giant metal abstractions, and superannuated corporate fountains. The Overton Park Greensward, that out-of-the-way patch of grass recently commandeered by the Zoo for parking space, would be a perfect place for Memphis’ yet-unrealized Public Art Graveyard. — Eileen Townsend

Best Sound Person: Alyssa Moore

All hail the dive bar that could. Not only does Murphy’s give all the door money to the bands performing, they also have a dedicated sound person who goes the extra mile to make touring and local bands sound as good as they possibly can. Tip your bartender and buy Alyssa a drink when you see her behind the sound board at Murphy’s, she deserves it. — CS

Best New Memphis-Based Company: LYFE Kitchen

We’re still in disbelief that LYFE Kitchen, the healthy fast-casual restaurant chain, moved their headquarters from tech-obsessed Palo Alto, California, to barbecue-obsessed Memphis. But they did, and we’re thrilled about it. LYFE, which stands for Love Your Food Everyday, offers wholesome gourmet meals in a casual fast-food environment at their East Memphis location. Nothing is fried, and no white sugar or white flour is used. And you won’t find a soda on the menu. You will find lots of vegan and gluten-free options, creamy smoothies, salads, wraps, and even breakfast. We’re fans of the veggie burger with avocado and smoky pepper aioli on ciabatta bread with kale salad on the side. LYFE will soon be opening a second location downtown in the remodeled Chisca building. — Bianca Phillips

Best Reason to Save the Coliseum: Memphis’ Preservationists

Remember when a developer said Midtown’s last best chance for Overton Square was demolishing all the existing buildings and erecting a suburban-style grocery store where the parking garage now stands? Because that almost happened. Today, Memphians turn out in huge numbers to enjoy free concerts at the Levitt Shell in Overton Park. They can do so because, for 20 years, a group called Save Our Shell kept it from being torn down. We enjoy Overton Park because an even earlier group of activists kept it from being cut in half by an interstate extension. Today music tourism pumps hundreds of millions of dollars into Memphis’ economy annually even though Beale Street was leveled and mostly shuttered into the ’80s. Stax was completely demolished, and Sun was once empty and ripe for redevelopment. Even if you don’t know what the Coliseum might someday become, you’ve got to give credit where it’s due: The preservationists have a pretty good track record. — CD

Pink Diva Cupcakery

Best Vegan Lunch: Pink Diva Cupcakery

Don’t let the name fool you — Pink Diva Cupcakery offers more than cupcakes. Every Monday through Saturday, owner Cassi Conyers serves up hot vegan comfort food from the space formerly occupied by DeJaVu on Florida. Ramen bowls, nachos, and vegan mac ‘n’ cheese bowls come with unlimited toppings (kale, tomatoes, mushrooms, etc.). Conyers makes good use of her deep fryer with fried spicy barbecue tofu and fried vegan fish filets. There’s a chickpea salad sandwich named The Susan (after Flyer managing editor Susan Ellis) and occasional daily specials, such as stuffed tofu manicotti. Saturdays feature a menu of breakfast all day! — BP

Best Beer Garden: Station No. 3: The Memphis Firehaus

Technically, Station No. 3: The Memphis Firehaus had not started as of press time, but we already know it’s going to be best beer garden of 2015. That’s because the team behind the fall pop-up event at the abandoned firehouse at Third and MLK has already hosted one awesome beer garden this past spring — The Revival at the Tennessee Brewery. Now Benjamin Orgel, Paul Stephens, Logan Scheidt, and J.C. Youngblood are taking the concept to the old firehouse. Every Thursday through Sunday, from October 1st through November 30th, Station No. 3: The Memphis Firehaus will be open with local craft beers, food trucks, live music, and Griz-watching parties. — BP

Best Reader: Janet Sides

All my fellow WYPL nerds, can I get a WOOP WOOP!?

Memphis Public Library ‘s WYPL radio station offers readings of books and local and national publications as well as other programming. There’s a certain comfort in the routine of WYPL — the reading of the sports section or TV section of The Commercial Appeal in the mornings, etc. I’ve picked up more than a few books after hearing a half hour or so on WYPL. And then there’s the great pleasure of how various readers handle omitting the bad words from copy. My favorite is “expletive deleted.” “The man said, ‘Now hold on, you expletive deleted! You’re telling me that expletive deleted just expletive deleted my wife?'” It’s expletive deleted awesome!

One reader who’s caught my ear is Janet Sides. I once heard her read a story from the Flyer. I knew the story was good, but when Sides took it on, she made the story sing — the cadences of her voice taking the listener through a wild ride, an expert pause after a joke a tonal rim shot. And great respect to her for her tackling of James Clavell’s epic, over 1,000-page Shōgun. — Susan Ellis

We like to think that the brave spirit of Harris is embodied in all the employees of what is now known as First Tennessee Bank, and it’s for that reason that the bank — which celebrated its 150th anniversary last year — ranks first with our readers year after year.

Everyweatherman

The heel wrestlers had a nickname for Dave Brown. They called the smooth-talking WMC meteorologist/wrestling announcer the “Weather Clown.” It was supposed to be an insult, but it’s also a great description of the beloved Memphis broadcaster who retired from WMC-TV in August after more than 50 years on the air. Brown was never a joker and he took his job as a weatherman seriously. But, like all good clowns, he possessed a deeply silly side too, as well as the ability to comfort us and move us to tears.

Brown’s roots are in radio, but in 1968 he migrated to television, becoming the dapper host of WHBQ-TV’s mid-day movie show, Dialing for Dollars. In the ’70s, he joined the weather team at WMC-TV. Through it all — or most of it, anyway — there was wrestling. It didn’t matter if pencil-necked performance comic Andy Kaufman fought women or wild man wrestler Terry Funk smashed his own head bloody with a metal folding chair. In the midst of the chaos, Brown remained as crisp and unrumpled as his suits. He was a similarly calm and calming presence when interrupting our favorite sitcoms to report on severe weather events like the 1994 ice storm or the devastating straight-line wind known as Hurricane Elvis. Brown, a tireless and convincing advocate for sober driving and better DUI laws, shared his grief just as calmly when his daughter and granddaughter were killed by a drunk driver in 1997.

Funny men are a dime a dozen. We trust our clowns with so much more than laughter, and Dave Brown the Weather Clown will be sorely missed. WMC did name him Meteorologist Emeritus, though, which hopefully means he’ll still be there when severe weather threatens the Mid-South. Or when Bill Dundee threatens Jerry Lawler. — Chris Davis

She tours relentlessly across the U.S., but last year she took time to record Hallelujah I’m a Dreamer with her husband and guitarist, Will Sexton. The record was released in April. Described as a “sonic portrait,” the record captures the couple’s live shows.

Best Comedian

READERS’ CHOICE

Ambrose Jones

Josh McLane

Katrina Coleman

Mo Alexander

This one was too close to call, but the folks listed above are among Memphis’ most gifted funny-bone ticklers.

Best Comedy Venue

1. Chuckles Comedy House

2. P & H Café

3. Hi-Tone

Chuckles Comedy House sought to lead the charge in a stand-up rebirth here when they opened last year. The club now brings a laudable mix of up-and-coming comedians, like Ambrose Jones, underground comics like Doo Doo Brown, and undisputed superstars like Marlon Wayans, Damon Wayans, and Carlos Mencia.

Best Karaoke

1. Windjammer Restaurant & Lounge

2. P & H Café

3. The Blue Monkey

Whether you’re crooning “Summer Love” with your bestie or croaking out “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” this classic East Memphis joint is the place to be.

Earnestine & Hazel’s

Best Hole-in-the-Wall

1. Earnestine & Hazel’s

2. Alex’s Tavern

3. The Cove — tie — P&H Café

Best Jukebox

1. Earnestine & Hazel’s

2. Alex’s Tavern

3. Young Avenue Deli

This is Memphis, so the competition for best cozy bar was fierce, but the haunted vibe in South Main’s landmark beer joint won the day. And E & H’s monster jukebox, thick with soul and R&B, draws drinkers to the dinky dance floor on the regular.

Best College Hangout

1. RP Tracks Restaurant and Bar

2. Alex’s Tavern — tieCeltic Crossing

3. Flying Saucer Draught Emporium

After years as a BOM bridesmaid, this University of Memphis-area institution ascended to the top spot, perhaps on the strength of the magic they work with barbecue and tofu.

Best After-Hours Club

1. Paula & Raiford’s Disco

2. Alex’s Tavern

3. Earnestine & Hazel’s

Best Dance Club

1. Paula & Raiford’s Disco

2. Club 152 on Beale

3. Rumba Room

Just imagine what downtown would be if Paula Raiford hadn’t taken up the reins of this dance palace when her father retired. And “No Discrimination!” has to be the best business motto in the city.

Best Pick-up Joint

1. Peabody Rooftop

2. Paula & Raiford’s Disco

3. Celtic Crossingtie — Flying Saucer Draught Emporium

Less of a “joint” and more of an “international landmark,” the weekly rooftop parties in the summer are the hands-down favorites of Flyer-reading singles looking to hook up.

Best Margarita

1. Molly’s La Casita

2. Babalu Tacos & Tapas

3. Las Delicias

There was a time when Molly’s was the ONLY place to get a decent ‘rita in Midtown. Now there’s competition, but it’s still the best place to shake off a stressful Monday.

Best Artisanal Cocktails

BOM 1. Alchemy

2. Hog & Hominy

3. Beauty Shop — tie — The Cove — tie — Peabody Lobby Bar

This Cooper-Young restaurant is built around a huge central bar, and the concept of bringing innovative cocktails to the masses is clearly a big hit with our readers. Bonus points for having an original drink called Tequila Mockingbird.

Now that football season is in full swing and basketball season isn’t far behind, fans will be flocking to the Fox & Hound to get their game on with an extensive beer selection and heavenly nachos.

Best Gay Bar

1. The Pumping Station

Best of Memphis 2015: Food & Drink

Sections: Introduction | Food & Drink | Nightlife | Arts & Entertainment | Media | Goods & Services | Staff Picks

Justin Fox Burks

Best New Restaurant

1. Belly Acres

2. Lafayette’s Music Room

3. Bounty on Broad

Rain or shine, the decor assures it’s always blue skies at Belly Acres, Overton Square’s nifty, next-generation burger joint. The environment is casual, whimsical, and family-friendly, with decorative nods to Memphis and the Mid-South. The menu is focused but free-ranging, and the fresh, farm-to-table ethos means hungry diners can chow down on grass-fed beef and handcrafted veggie burgers topped with items like braised tomatoes and pickled greens. House-made condiments go beautifully with brioche buns. And wheat buns. And sourdough buns. And the gluten-free buns too!

Best Breakfast

1. Brother Juniper’s

2. Bryant’s Breakfast

3. The Arcade Restaurant

Imagine an open-faced omelet spread with sour cream and home fries and topped with portobello mushrooms, tomatoes, bacon, green onions, feta, and cheddar cheese, and served with a side of hearty, homemade five-grain struan toast, and a full-flavored cup of just-brewed coffee. Of course, you don’t have to imagine it, you can always visit Brother Juniper’s and ask for the San Diegan. Brother Juniper’s is a Memphis breakfast tradition, with more than 20 signature omelets and the best biscuits in town.

Best Brunch

1. Owen Brennan’s

2. Beauty Shop

3. The Majestic Grille

Owen Brennan’s New Orleans-style menu has it all: beef, chicken, seafood, jambalaya, shrimp and grits, gumbo, and étouffée. Sunday brunch is all that plus sausage, fried catfish in a creamy crawfish sauce, and a variety of Crescent City egg dishes. Live jazz music enhances the New Orleans-style dining experience.

Best Shared/Small Plates Menu

1. Babalu Tacos & Tapas

2. Alchemy

3. Sweet Grass

When you bite into an empanada stuffed with Aspen Ridge natural ground beef, roasted potatoes and mushrooms, and a cumin-scented crema, you can almost hear expert fingers working their way around a conga drum and hear Desi Arnaz’ clear tenor voice singing, “Babalu!” Strangely enough, that also happens when you bite into the crab cakes. And the wild Maine mussels.

Best Wine List

1. Flight Restaurant & Wine Bar

2. Greencork

3. Bari Ristorante — tie — Folk’s Folly Prime Steak House

Is there anything nicer than sitting outside on the Main Street Mall watching all the people go by? Yes. Doing the exact same thing with a bottle of Beaux Frères Pinot Noir. A d’Arenberg “Stump Jump” Shiraz would also be nice. So would a lovely Duckhorn Chardonnay. It would be even better with a plate of Flight’s Scallops Rockefeller or an assortment of artisanal sausage and cheese.

Best Streak

1. Folk’s Folly Prime Steak House

2. Ruth’s Chris Steak House

3. Buckley’s Grill — tie

The Butcher Shop

The lights are always low at Folk’s Folly. The decor: solid, built to withstand the tests of time and changing sensibilities. Music pours from the piano bar, and good smells waft from the kitchen. It’s the perfect environment to enjoy an ice-cold martini. You’ll also want to savor a bowl of creamy she-crab soup and maybe a lollipop veal chop. Or a 14-ounce filet. Or cowboy ribeye. Or you could always just have another martini. And dessert.

Best Barbecue

BOM 1. Central BBQ

2. Bar-B-Q Shop

3. Germantown Commissary

Best Ribs

1. Central BBQ

2. Charles Vergos’ Rendezvous

3. Bar-B-Q Shop — tie — Corky’s Ribs & BBQ

From the dawn of civilization, humans have engaged in heated debate over whose fire made the best-tasting meat. Memphians perfected the contentious tradition but seem to agree that the folks at Central BBQ know what they’re doing. Mouthwatering ribs? Check. Smoked hot wings? Check. Pulled pork sandwiches? Oh yeah. All that and generous portions of barbecue nachos. And if pork’s not your thing (god forbid), they do a pretty good job with beef, chicken, and turkey as well.

Best Burger

BOM 1. Huey’s

2. Belly Acres

3. Tops Bar-B-Q

Best Lunch

1. Huey’s

2. Central BBQ

3. Elwood’s Shack

Best Service

1. Huey’s

2. Restaurant Iris

3. Andrew Michael Italian Kitchen — tie — Folk’s Folly Prime Steak House

Justin Fox Burks

Brian Davis, Huey’s

Best Late-Night Dining

1. Huey’s

2. Alex’s Tavern

3. Earnestine & Hazel’s

Best Kid-Friendly Restaurant

1. Huey’s

2. Belly Acres

3. Mellow Mushroom

Kids love Huey’s because it’s a place where they’re encouraged to break all the rules. Who needs a coloring book when you can draw on the walls while waiting for your burger? Or you can turn your drinking straw into a rocket launcher and sink frill picks in the ceiling tiles. Grown-ups like it for the same reason. Also, because the Smokey Melt burger is perfection on toast. Numerous locations make it convenient. Best of all, Huey’s never stops innovating. The menu’s always full of old favorites and new things to try.

Best Hot Wings

1. Ching’s Hot Wings

2. Central BBQ

3. Alex’s Tavern

Maybe it’s the wings that make Ching’s special. The Honey Gold are sweet and tangy, and the Suicide can light up the lips and make the endorphins flow. It might also be the Ramen noodle-seasoned fries. Or that concoction they call Blue Drink.

Best Fried Chicken

BOM 1. Gus’s Fried Chicken

2. Jack Pirtle’s Chicken

3. Uncle Lou’s Fried Chicken

Gus’s hot and spicy fried chicken has come a long way since the 1950s when Napoleon and Maggie Bonner opened their first little shack in Mason. Today, it’s a certifiable phenomenon that regularly tops national “best of” lists. Also, what was once a local favorite is now a growing franchise opening new stores all the time.

Best Place for Dessert

1. Beauty Shop

2. Flight — tie — Paulette’s Restaurant

3. Tart

Chef Karen Carrier’s ability to introduce just the right amount of sweetness into her savory, spicy dishes almost makes dessert unnecessary as a concept. After all, a Pimm’s Cup with watermelon and wings covers all cravings in a single plate. Nevertheless, the Beauty Shop’s daily dessert specials are always a treat. While the restaurant’s menu tends to be forward-thinking, you can’t go wrong with classic old-fashioned coconut and red velvet cakes.

Justin Fox Burks

Beauty Shop

Best Dessert Shop

BOM 1. Muddy’s Bake Shop

2. The Cheesecake Corner

3. Frost Bake Shop

Muddy’s must be putting actual Prozac in the chocolate Prozac cupcakes, because y’all are obviously addicted. An overwhelming majority of votes went to Kat Gordon’s kitschy bake shop — home of the best cupcakes, cookies, bars (OMG, vegan peanut butter bars!), and pies.

Best Frozen Treat Shop

1. Jerry’s Sno Cones

2. YoLo Frozen Yogurt

3. La Michoacana

Who waits in line for 30 minutes for a sno cone? Memphians do! At least, if it’s a sno cone from Jerry’s. With a massive menu of flavors, a reputation for generously pouring on the syrup, and the option of adding a scoop of soft-serve (just say “supreme”), Jerry’s has the market cornered on sno cones. If you’re looking for something more substantial, try the jalapeño-flavored fried pickle spears.

Best Smoothies/Juices

1. The Cosmic Coconut — tie — Smoothie King

2. Tropical Smoothie Café

3. Raw Girls

Our readers appreciate local businesses, but they also love convenience. That may explain why the locally owned Cosmic Coconut tied with the Smoothie King chain. There’s only one Cosmic Coconut, the all-vegan juice and smoothie shop, but there are three locations of Smoothie King spread across the city. Either way, the chocolate-covered almond smoothie (almonds, banana, cacao, and coconut) at the Coconut and the super nutty grain smoothie (vegan protein, super grains, peanut butter, and banana) at Smoothie King are equally delicious.

Best Italian

1. Andrew Michael Italian Kitchen

2. Pete & Sam’s Famous Italian Restaurant

3. Ciao Bella Italian Grill and Bar

When it comes to Italian fare, our readers like the swanky Andrew Michael Italian Kitchen. We’re guessing it has something to do with Newman Farm pork served with fennel, passatelli, pancetta, and red peas. Or maybe it was that famous chocolate sticky toffee pudding with salted caramel and gelato.

Best Mediterranean

1. Casablanca Restaurant

2. Kwik Chek

3. Petra Café

There is much to love about Casablanca, but we think their smoky baba ghanoush is the best in town. If you’re looking for falafel, chicken shawarma, kabobs, or couscous, this East Memphis eatery is the place to go. It’s so popular that they’re expanding soon with a new location in Midtown.

Best New American

1. Hog & Hominy

2. Beauty Shop

3. Bounty on Broad

It’s Italian and Southern. It’s relaxed and refined. It’s neckbone gravy and crème fraîche. All of it has made Hog & Hominy a hit machine for Andy Ticer and Michael Hudman, the wonderboys of Brookhaven Circle.

Best Mexican

1. Las Delicias Mexican Bar & Grill

2. Las Tortugas Deli Mexicana — tie — Molly’s La Casita

3. El Mezcal Restaurant & Bar

If you’re looking for authentic Mexican food (not Tex-Mex!), Las Delicias has you covered with baked pork leg tortas, charro beans, chicken hot tamales, or flan Napolitano. They’re locally famous for their crispy, hand-fried tortilla chips and chunky guacamole, which is sold at the restaurant and area grocery stores.

Best Cajun/Creole

1. Bayou Bar & Grill

2. DeJaVu

3. The Second Line

With several varieties of Abita on draft (including the high-gravity Abita Andygator), a menu of po’boys and gator chili cheese fries, and Mardi Gras beads hanging from the ceiling, the Bayou Bar & Grill is where locals go when they don’t have time to drive six hours south to New Orleans.

Best Chinese

1. Mulan Asian Bistro

2. Wang’s Mandarin House

3. A-Tan

Besides the ubiquitous fried rice, lo mein, and egg rolls, Mulan offers a menu of authentic Szechuan cuisine from the Sichuan province in Southwestern China. That portion of the menu features hard-to-find (in Memphis anyway) items like tofu with preserved egg, sliced beef and offal in chili sauce, and crispy tiny fish with peanuts. But the less adventurous can find plenty to eat on Mulan’s massive menu that also includes sushi.

Best Thai

1. Bhan Thai

2. Bangkok Alley

3. Jasmine Thai & Vegetarian

Three words — pad see ew. No Thai place in town can touch Bhan Thai’s version of this traditional Thai dish of flat rice noodles with garlic, carrots, broccoli and your choice of chicken, pork, beef, or tofu. But pretty much everything at Bhan Thai is the best — the pad thai, the panang curry, or the cashew nut stir-fry. The amazing patio and homey interior of the restaurant are pretty awesome, too.

Best Vietnamese

1. Pho Binh — tie — Pho Saigon

2. Saigon Le

3. Lotus Vietnamese Restaurant

Whether it’s from Pho Binh or Pho Saigon, our readers love their Vietnamese food. The legendary lemongrass tofu and the all-you-can-eat buffet surely swayed our readers to cast their votes for Pho Binh, but the greasy Bánh xèo (a savory crepe stuffed with meats or fried tofu, the ultimate hangover food) or the hearty bánh mì sandwich at Pho Saigon get equal love.

Best Japanese

1. Sekisui

2. Osaka Japanese Cuisine

3. Sakura Japanese Restaurant

Sekisui has been serving sushi and other Japanese delights at various locations in Memphis for many years. And Flyer readers appreciate Sekisui’s consistency and commitment to quality year after year.

Best Indian

1. India Palace

2. Golden India

3. Bombay House

India Palace on Poplar keeps drawing crowds — and votes for Best of Memphis — at its long-time Midtown location. Memphis fans of tandoori chicken, gulab jamun, rice kheer, and tasty naan bread say India Palace is the place to go.

Justin Fox Burks

Soul Fish Café

Best Home Cooking/Soul Food

1. Soul Fish Café

2. The Cupboard Restaurant

3. Alcenia’s

Justifiably famous for its catfish, Soul Fish Café keeps its customers happy at three locations — Midtown, East Memphis, and Germantown. And those hush puppies, y’all! Mmm, good.

Best Vegetarian

1. Fuel Café

2. Café Eclectic

3. Imagine Vegan Café — tie — Whole Foods Market

Best Food Truck

1. Fuel Café

2. Central BBQ

3. Say Cheese!

Flyer readers selected a new winner for Best Vegetarian. Fuel Café has been around for a while, serving delicious vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes at its funky former-gas-station locale on Madison. We’re betting that delicious Walnut Meatloaf is what put them over the top this year. And Fuel doubled down by also taking home the award for Best Food Truck. Way to go. Literally.

Best Seafood

1. The Half Shell Restaurant

2. Tsunami

3. Bonefish Grill

The venerable Half Shell brings home the prize for seafood again this year. Despite the restaurant’s longevity, the menu stays fresh with popular innovations like the Ricotta Crawfish Crêpe, Pompano en Papillote, and Baja Seafood Nachos. Ahoy, y’all.

Best Pizza

1. Aldo’s Pizza Pies

2. Memphis Pizza Café

3. Pyro’s Fire Fresh Pizza

Boom, here’s a new winner! Aldo’s Pizza Pies, a downtown favorite, muscled its way to the top of the pizza ladder this year, no doubt helped by its new Midtown location with its rooftop deck. That’s some topping!

Best Sandwiches

1. Fino’s From the Hill — tie — Young Avenue Deli

2. Elwood’s Shack

3. Kwik Chek

No one who’s seen the crowd on a Saturday morning at Fino’s Madison Avenue location would be surprised to learn this long-time Midtown favorite has won the Best Sandwiches title for another year. And soon, East Memphians will get their shot at a Big Guido, as a new Fino’s location has been announced for Brookhaven Circle.

Best Server

READERS’ CHOICE

Anna Cade, Huey’s

Heather Farwell, Local

Jean Pruett, The Slider Inn

Jeff Frisby, Restaurant Iris

Logan West, Local

Tony Dortch, Huey’s

These five customer favorites won over Flyer voters with their charm, wit, and stellar service. And we bet their tips are pretty good, too.

Best Place for People-Watching

1. Beale Street

2. Peabody Lobby Bar

3. Flying Saucer Draught Emporium

Justin Fox Burks

Beale Street

You want to watch people? Sure you do. It’s better than watching goldfish swim or grass grow. People are fun! And funny. And on Beale Street they’re drinking Big Ass Beers, eating tasty food, and dancing to great music. And that’s always worth watching.

Best Patio

1. Lafayette’s Music Room

2. Celtic Crossingtie — The Slider Inn

3. Bhan Thai

Overton Square’s premier music hall got popular in a hurry, winning Best Patio for the first time. It’s easy to see why. Lafayette’s is a prime perch to watch the crowds go by while eating wonderful food and listening to great music. What’s not to like?

Best Bakery

1. Muddy’s Bake Shop

2. La Baguette

3. Frost Bake Shop

Muddy’s Bake Shop takes the cake again. This East Memphis icon won over Flyer voters with its Shady Wake, Cocoa Chanel, and Kick in the Pants pies and its top-rated cupcakes. It probably doesn’t hurt that Muddy’s has brought the sweetness to Midtown, as well.

Best Donut Shop

BOM 1. Gibson’s Donuts

2. Howard’s Donuts

3. Krispy Kreme Doughnuts

Few places live in Memphis lore like Gibson’s Donuts. Whether it’s a simple hot glazed or an all-out maple bacon, Gibson’s draw has Memphians lining up day and night (and then we post about it on social media).

Best Coffeehouse

1. Café Eclectic — tie — Muddy’s Coffee and Bake Shop (formerly Grind House)

2. Otherlands Coffee Bar

3. Republic Coffee

Café Eclectic and Muddy’s Coffee and Bake Shop tied for Best Coffeehouse, but one thing is clear — our readers must like baked goods with their cup of joe. Café Eclectic offers up handmade donuts and vegan pies with their Illy brews, and Muddy’s customers can pair their cup with a cupcake.

Best Brewery

1. Wiseacre Brewing Co.

2. Ghost River Brewing

3. Memphis Made Brewing Co.

Memphis can’t get enough Wiseacre. Their expansion tells us so. More than that, Wiseacre is engrained in our culture now. Consider these words: Tarasque, Ananda, and Tiny Bomb. These mean something (and something good) in Memphis now.

Best Beer Selection (Store)

1.

Madison Growler/
Memphis Cash Saver

2. Buster’s Liquors & Wines

3. Joe’s Wines & Liquors

Burly beer guys aren’t much for romance. But you should just see ’em at Cash Saver. They skip down the aisles through the rainbow of ales and lagers. And when they see their receipts, they look thankfully skyward like the rainy freedom scene in Shawshank Redemption.

Best Beer Selection (Bar/Restaurant)

1. Flying Saucer

2. Young Avenue Deli

3. Boscos Squared

The Saucer was doing beer here before beer was cool. For 18 years, beers from all over the world have poured from its massive wall of taps. Grab a stool, order a beer, and get yourself beer-ducated.

Best Chef

1. Kelly English, Five Spot/Restaurant Iris/The Second Line

2. Andrew Ticer and Michael Hudman, Andrew Michael/Hog & Hominy/Porcellino’s

3. Felicia Willett, Felicia Suzanne’s — tie — Michael Patrick, Rizzo’s Diner

tie — Patrick Reilly, Majestic Grille

If Kelly English doubts that Memphis loves him, he should consider that he’s topped this list every year since 2009. He’s familiar with the end zone, but hopefully, he’ll still give us a touchdown dance.

Best Date Night Restaurant

1. Restaurant Iris

2. Flight

3. Folk’s Folly Prime Steak House

Low lights. White linens. Fine wine. Iris is right out of a Hollywood date-night scene. The menu is totally approachable, and the wait staff is patient and happy to help. It’s fine dining minus the anxiety.

Justin Fox Burks

Kelly English and crew at The Second Line and Restaurant Iris

Best Restaurant

1. The Second Line

2. Restaurant Iris

3. Hog & Hominy — tie — Huey’s

Meat pies, barbecue shrimp, debris, a full line of po’boys, a killer bar, and a great patio. It’s no wonder The Second Line is always packed out.

Best of Memphis 2015: Introduction

Sections: Food & Drink | Nightlife | Arts & Entertainment | Media | Goods & Services | Staff Picks

Last week I was getting my hair cut when I overheard talk about the Best of Memphis. Try as I might to eavesdrop, it was hard to hear over the hair dryers and chatter. But what I did make out was something about the 300 categories on the ballot. That number isn’t exactly accurate, but the point is taken. The ballot is long! a huge thanks goes out to our readers for taking the time to cast their votes in Best of Memphis. Your opinion counts.

And speaking of counting, I was interested in seeing what gets the most votes, so I went through the results. The top ten are:

  1. Memphis Grizzlies (Best Sports Team)
  2. Gus’s Fried Chicken (Best Fried Chicken)
  3. Gibson’s Donuts (Best Donuts)
  4. Hollywood Feed (Best Pet Store)
  5. Central BBQ (Best BBQ)
  6. The Booksellers at Laurelwood (Best Bookstore, new)
  7. Muddy’s Bake Shop (Best Dessert Shop)
  8. Muddy’s Bake Shop (Best Bakery)
  9. Buster’s Liquors & Wines (Best Liquor Store)
  10. Jarvis Greer (Best Sportscaster)

Make of it what you will.

In addition to our readers, we would like to thank, as always, our advertisers. The Flyer wouldn’t exist without them.

The BOM next to the winner’s name means that they won by a vast majority. Reader’s Choice means the vote was too close to proclaim a winner.

Best of Memphis was written by Richard Alley, Shara Clark, Chris Davis, Susan Ellis, Michael Finger, Chris McCoy, Bianca Phillips, Alexandra Pusateri, Toby Sells, Chris Shaw, Eileen Townsend, and Bruce VanWyngarden. Design is by Carrie Beasley, images by Justin Fox Burks, and graphics by Bryan Rollins.

Best of Memphis 2012: Staff Picks

Best Key Lime Pie in the South (Including Florida)

Jim’s Place Grille carries on the long-standing Memphis tradition started at Jim’s Place with excellent food and fun atmosphere, but one of my absolute favorite things about eating there is their homemade Key lime pie. I’m serious when I say that I’ve never had a better slice of Key lime pie. Ever. Yes, even in Florida. Something about its crumbly crust and combination of sweet and tangy is the perfect way to finish off a meal of their stuffed shrimp and house salad. Need I say more? — Anna Cox

Best Movie Theater

Malco Ridgeway Four. The movie theater many of us in Midtown hoped that Studio on the Square would be when it opened. Movies for grown-ups in a four-screen complex worth the drive, and minus the hassle and crowds at Paradiso. Also the most comfortable seats in town, and the best movie food and drinks.

John Branston

Best Dog Park

It wasn’t long ago that Memphis didn’t have any fenced-in parks for pooches. Now we have at least four, including downtown’s Barking Lot, the dog park at Shelby Farms, and the city dog park on Avery. But there’s no place better for butt sniffin’ and tail waggin’ than Overton Park’s new Overton Bark. Natural shade, handmade benches, dog-friendly water fountains, and ground covered in wood chips to prevent dogs from muddying up the place make Overton Bark the best, paws down.

Bianca Phillips

Best Smoothie

Cosmic Coconut. This all-vegan smoothie and juice bar recently expanded their hours (open until 8:30 p.m.) and added daily meat-free lunch specials (think Mexican Monday and Burger & Friesday!), as well as a vegan grilled cheese sandwich available anytime. And they still do smoothies better than any place in town. Made with organic, natural, vegan ingredients, Cosmic Coconut smoothies will leave you feeling satisfied without the guilt. We’re partial to the Chocolate Covered Almond Smoothie (banana, almond milk, almond butter, cacao, carob, and agave). — BP

Best Soup

Soup is a meal. Soup is not a meal. Both are wrong. The chicken tortilla soup at El Toro Loco on Poplar at Union Extended is two meals, and very good ones at that. Big slices of white-meat chicken with rice, cilantro, tortilla, grated cheese, avocado, and a delicious rich broth. Served with chips and salsa, at $5 for a huge bowl it’s an incredible bargain. Add a frozen margarita for $3. You can’t do this at home for the price, and the service is fast and friendly, too. — JB

Best Worst Year To Have a Uterus

By all accounts, 2012 hasn’t been a banner year for women in the Mid-South. After defunding Planned Parenthood in the fall of 2011, Shelby County started off 2012 by squandering half-a-million Title X family-planning dollars, leaving untold numbers of women without Title X services. Tennessee legislators proposed a bill that would force the public disclosure of the names of abortion providers and detailed information about abortion patients. They later backed down, settling instead for an amended version of the law that simply hampers access to abortions by requiring providers to have admitting privileges at a local hospital. The bill passed into law this summer and is the same kind of law that currently threatens the existence of Mississippi’s only abortion clinic. As Women’s Health News blogger Rachel Walden put it, “Welcome to Tennessee —Try Not To Be a Woman While You’re Here.” — Hannah Sayle

Best Vocal Performance

Rick Trotter, the Memphis Grizzlies PA announcer. A Griz game at FedExForum is a great Memphis experience for a lot of reasons, notable among them the entertainment value provided by Trotter. A Rudy Gay dunk or Z-Bo put-back or visiting team miscue (“Shot clock: VIOLATED”) is cause for Trotter’s vocal adrenaline. It makes you get on your feet and shout. Heart. — Greg Akers

Best Bygone Griz

OJ Mayo. Never again will we hear Rick Trotter exclaiming, “Oh! Oh! OJ Mayo!” after the guard sinks a three, jogs down the court, and blows the smoke off his hands and holsters them. Tear drop. — GA

Best Undiscovered Natural Wonder

Without question, Memphis’ most underappreciated natural resource is the Mississippi River. While there is a small but rabid group of boat owners, kayakers, and canoeists who enjoy the river, most Memphians still seem to fear it or prefer to watch it from Tom Lee Park or Greenbelt Park. If you can find a way to get out on the river and explore the many sandbars, hidden lakes, and abundant bird- and wildlife, you’ll be hooked.

Bruce VanWyngarden

Best Tearjerker

Undefeated. If you’re a Memphian and you don’t cry at least once while watching this Oscar-winning documentary, you’re broken. The film — about the Manassas High School football team and coaching staff, struggling through life together — is an emotional haymaker. — GA

Best Salad

Try Cafe 1912’s Lyonnaise salad once, and you’ll be hooked. A blend of fresh greens, crispy potato slices, Benton Farms bacon, topped by a fresh, soft-boiled egg — this is a salad that doubles as a meal. — BV

Best French Fries

My vote goes to the fries at Fuel. They’re cut thick but not too thick, with skin on and lightly salted. And they come with three dipping sauces. Whether as a side for any of the restaurant’s excellent entrées or just as an appetizer, Fuel’s fries are a great way to get your ‘tater fix. — BV

Best Worst Year To Be a Pig

This was a tough year for heritage breed pigs, the reluctant stars of both the first Cochon 555 visit to Memphis and the inaugural Cochon Heritage BBQ. These two weekend-long festivals dedicated to porky delicacies and fine wine and bourbon brought a culinary wonderland to Memphis in February and August. But while Memphians were chowing down on full snout-to-tail menus, pigs all over the country erased “visit Memphis” from their bucket list. — HS

Best Place To Face Your Doppelganger AND Best Place To Rent a So-Awful-It’s-Good B Movie

Black Lodge Video. Okay, I’m not so sure how literally the Twin Peaks reference in their name and on their store sign translates (or if anyone else out there will get it?), but there is a slight chance you may have to confront your fears and your evil twin soul when perusing the shelves of Black Lodge Video. There is an even greater chance that you’ll find a weird, wild, and grotesque selection of movies to entertain or terrify you or gross you out — whatever you’re into. Seriously, whatever you’re into. — Shara Clark

Best New Cocktail Invented by a Memphis Arts Administrator

Opera Memphis’ hyperactive general director Ned Canty is an idea machine. One minute he’s planning a global campaign to prove opera isn’t stodgy, then he’s bragging about the Memphis-centric cocktail he’s concocted and named “Ham” Embree, after a local artist who lived in his house for decades. The recipe, according to Canty: “Take one bottle of Ghost River Golden Ale, and pour into a cold glass. Add 1 1/2 ounces St-Germain liqueur. Stir gently. Take a moment to thank the Lord you live in Memphis.”

Best of Memphis

As you’ve most likely noted, the visual theme for the Best of Memphis 2012 issue is a nod to this year’s elections. With this in mind, I was scratching about, looking at old campaign slogans to come up with a suitably zippy I Like Ike!-like tagline. I Like Memphis! doesn’t quite do it.

Romney’s campaign slogan, btw, is “Believe in America,” while Obama’s is “Forward.” The period is part of the slogan. While ellipses would most certainly work, the period suggests something more decisive.

Forward.

So, I was talking to a co-worker about the winners in a particular category, and, boy, was she mad. Bark, bark, bark! The interesting thing is that she is a huge supporter of the first-place winner, frequents the place probably once a week. But, for her, that winner is not the BEST, and so, bark, bark, bark!

I love a good temper tantrum, but what I really appreciated was how engaged she was in the ballot, and that appreciation goes, too, to the record number of voters we had for this year’s Best of Memphis. It takes a chunk of time to go through a ballot that has 125 categories.

This year’s ballot has two new categories: Best Food Truck and Best New American Cuisine (which we used to call “contemporary”). Perhaps the biggest change on the ballot is that we axed the entire “And the Rest” section, which included Best Memphis Success and Best Memphis Failure (the wording of which drove some batty). We may bring back the section for 2013.

As always, the bold “BOM” means that the winner received an overwhelming majority of the votes. “Reader’s Choice” means that the vote was too close to call.

The Best of Memphis issue was written by Greg Akers, Joe Boone, John Branston, Shara Clark, Anna Cox, Chris Davis, Michael Finger, Leonard Gill, Louis Goggans, Chris Herrington, Bianca Phillips, Hannah Sayle, and Bruce VanWyngarden.

Forward. — Susan Ellis, Managing Editor

Food + Drink

Best Food Truck

1. Central BBQ
2. Fuel Cafe
3. YoLo Airstream – Tie – Revival Southern Food Company

Best Barbecue

BOM 1. Central BBQ

2. Germantown Commissary

3. Bar-B-Q Shop — Tie — Corky’s

Our readers have been saying it for years, so they weren’t surprised when USA Today recently profiled Central BBQ, “the best barbecue in Memphis.” It isn’t only the homemade pork rinds or the barbecue nachos or the succulent ribs smothered in Central’s signature tangy, sweet sauce; we also love the Ghost River beer on tap, covered patio, multiple locations, and snazzy new food truck. For all these reasons and more, Central has stolen the hearts (and bellies) of barbecue lovers in Memphis — and that’s no small feat in a town that eats, sleeps, and breathes slow-smoked pork.

Best New Restaurant

1. Alchemy

2. Slider Inn

3. Stone Soup Café

Best New American Cuisine

1. Alchemy — Tie — Sweet Grass

2. Majestic Grille

3. Beauty Shop

Alchemy offers eclectic, modern cuisine, an extensive wine, beer, and cocktail list, and a swanky atmosphere. Somewhere between one of the mixologist’s latest concoctions and your second helping of chorizo mac and cheese, you’ll get an idea why Memphis diners are buzzing about Alchemy. Sharing top honors in this category is Sweet Grass, site of the recent Heritage BBQ pop-up restaurant and home to Ryan Trimm’s smart take on Low Country cuisine. Try Sweet Grass’ version of the classic shrimp and grits, featuring house-made sausage and Benton’s country ham.

Best Breakfast

1. Brother Juniper’s

2. Bryant’s Breakfast

3. Blue Plate Café

Keep your bread and circuses; all it takes is a cup of hot coffee and the promise of an open table to keep patrons at Brother Juniper’s happy. Year after year, our readers have insisted that this breakfast spot (visited by Rachael Ray herself) is worth the wait — and on weekends, you’ll be in for one. Enormous omelets, breakfast specials, cheese grits, home fries, vegan and veggie options, and friendly service make this a Memphis institution.

Best Brunch

1. Owen Brennan’s Restaurant

2. Majestic Grille

3. Boscos Squared — Tie — Beauty Shop

If you can’t make it to Bourbon Street for brunch, Owen Brennan’s serves up the next best thing at its impressive Sunday brunch buffet. Complete with omelets, waffles, a variety of Cajun/Creole-style seafood dishes, bananas Foster, bread pudding, and much more, Owen Brennan’s has long been charming Memphians out of bed on Sunday mornings for a hangover-busting brunch with New Orleans flair.

Best Wine List

1. Flight Restaurant and Wine Bar

2. Le Chardonnay

3. Folk’s Folly Prime Steak House

Mirroring its small-plate concept, Flight offers a number of flights of three 2-ounce wine samples, an excellent way to survey the wine list and pair each wine with a flight of upscale contemporary dishes. Of course, if you find something you like, any sample is available by the bottle. No wonder this is a favorite for wine lovers year after year.

Best Steak

1. Folk’s Folly Prime Steak House

2. Ruth’s Chris Steak House

3. The Butcher Shop

Folk’s Folly has staked its claim as the best steak joint in Memphis, and it doesn’t appear to be relinquishing the honor anytime soon. Since 1977, Folk’s Folly has been an institution in Memphis, coupling valet-quality service with a comfortable atmosphere and some of the finest prime steaks in the city. Not only are the cuts spot-on, each piece of meat is cooked to perfection, and our readers particularly appreciate the charm of a locally owned and operated steak house.

Best Ribs

1. Charles Vergos’ Rendezvous

2. Central BBQ

3. Corky’s

Sometimes there’s a reason for the hype, and once again our readers say this tourist hot spot has the food to back up its reputation. The fall-off-the-bone pork ribs rubbed in a Greek spice mix are the stars of the menu, but they’re bolstered by a supporting cast of spice-speckled sausage and cheese plate, lamb riblets, pulled pork, and some of the surliest waiters in Memphis — it’s all part of the charm.

Best Hot Wings

1. D’Bo’s Wings n’ More

2. Central BBQ

3. Mr. P’s Buffalo Wings

Sure, they may add “and more” to their name, but it’s the wings that make this local chain soar. Owner David Boyd built his wing business from a trailer at festivals and fairs to five brick-and-mortar locations throughout Memphis and north Mississippi. With all those D’Bo’s around, Mid-Southerners never have to go without their mild, hot, or “suicidal” wings.

Best Fried Chicken

BOM 1. Gus’s Fried Chicken

2. Jack Pirtle’s Chicken

3. Uncle Lou’s Fried Chicken

Never mind why the chicken crossed the road — we’ve seen people walk into traffic for Gus’s fried chicken, and if you drive around their Front Street location at lunchtime, you’d be smart to keep an eye out for chicken-crazed pedestrians as well. That’s because the birds at Gus’s are hot, crispy, slightly spicy, juicy, and always fresh out of the fryer — and Memphians just can’t help themselves.

Best Cajun/Creole

1. Bayou Bar & Grill

2. Owen Brennan’s Restaurant

3. Pearl’s Oyster House

Our readers prefer to head on down to the Bayou to satisfy their po’ boy, crawfish étouffée, and red beans and rice cravings. Not only do they have a variety of Cajun and Creole options, they also have a patio beloved by regulars. For filet gumbo and crawfish pie, Memphians know where to go.

Best Mediterranean

1. Petra Cafe

2. Casablanca

3. Kwik Chek

Hummus, falafel, kabobs, and salads (from Greek to Caesar). Dolmades, souvlaki, and moussaka. The Flying Camel sandwich, the Sicilian panini. We must be talking Mediterranean … and more (the Philly cheese steak). We’re talking Petra Cafe, which has had Cordova, Germantown, and Forest Hill-Irene covered for years. Now Midtown too on Union. Got a group to feed? Order gyro meat, pasta salad, kalamata olives, and tabouleh from Petra by the pound!

Best Dessert

1. Muddy’s Bake Shop

2. Cheesecake Corner

3. YoLo Frozen Yogurt

Best Bakery

1. Muddy’s Bake Shop

2. La Baguette

3. Gigi’s Cupcakes

The eggs come from cage-free, free-range chickens. The milk’s organic. No preservatives. No added hormones. No Styrofoam. Just cakes and pies (whole or by the slice), cookies, bars, and last, not least, cupcakes (plus pimento cheese) to drool over. And because Muddy’s doesn’t advertise, it relies on word of mouth from faithful customers at its East Memphis location. The faithful have spoken: They’ve voted Muddy’s Bake Shop #1 in Memphis in two scrumptious categories.

Best Frozen Dessert

1. YoLo Frozen Yogurt

2. Jerry’s Sno Cone

3. La Michoacana

YoLo’s frozen yogurt and handmade gelato have been a big success — with Memphians in general and with Flyer readers in particular. In addition to frozen treats, YoLo offers baked goods too: good for you, good for the community: YoLo is a member of Project Green Fork. Its menu is locally sourced. That YoLo Airstream you’ve seen around town? You can rent it for that special occasion through YoLo’s catering service. So, go local, go green, and go mobile: Go YoLo.

Best Italian

1. Pete & Sam’s

2. Andrew Michael Italian Kitchen

3. Coletta’s Restaurant

Pete & Sam’s: family-owned for more than 60 years … That’s a lot of Memphians to feed. And that’s a lot of antipasti, spaghetti, and ravioli. And that’s not all: pizza, chicken, steaks, and seafood — all in a family-friendly atmosphere.

Best Mexican

1. Las Delicias Mexican Bar & Grill

2. Las Tortugas Deli Mexicana

3. El Mezcal Mexican Restaurant

To start with, the homemade chips at La Delicias Mexican Bar & Grill are customer favorites, and the chunky, made-to-order guacamole is there for those chips (or a spoon) to be dipped into. Don’t stop there. The key word at Las Delicias is “delights” — “fresh,” too. Try the Chicken Enchiladas Verde. And while we’re on the subject of green: Try the equally refreshing margaritas at Las Delicias. And in this ‘cue-lovin’ city, the pastor (marinated pork) comes to you inside a taco or burrito and as a torta (hot sub).

Best Chinese

1. Wang’s Mandarin House

2. A-Tan

3. Mulan Bistro

At Wang’s, there’s an extensive selection of Chinese favorites, and that includes the Happy Family (beef, prawns, pork, and chicken, along with Wang’s special sauce and broccoli), an entrée to make you a happy camper — and eater. That’s one reason Wang’s has been consistently voted “Best Chinese” by Flyer readers.

Best Thai

1. Bhan Thai

2. Bangkok Alley

3. Thai Bistro

Nestled in a former two-story house in Midtown, the folks at Bhan Thai didn’t scrimp on the backyard: The deck is a welcome respite from the Memphis heat. The heat is on, though, in the kitchen, especially the green curry, the Drunken Seafood Combination, and the Spicy Old Man (eggplant, onions, bell peppers, and fresh basil). Plenty of other offerings, however, for the mild-hearted. And FYI: bhan: That’s Thai for “house.”

Best Vietnamese

1. Pho Saigon

2. Saigon Le

3. Pho Binh

Pho Saigon has been warming the tummies and hearts of Memphians for years with its seemingly endless variations on classic Vietnamese soups with an equally endless variety of toppings. Don’t overlook the drink offerings though: Beverages run from black milk tea to coconut meat on ice to jackfruit milk shakes to good old fresh-squeezed orange juice.

Best Japanese/Sushi

1. Sekisui

2. Bluefin

3. Sekisui Pacific Rim

At Sekisui, you’re covered — whether it’s the intimate setting in Midtown, the roomy interior on Humphreys, the sophisticated scene inside Pacific Rim on Poplar, or Sekisui in Collierville, Bartlett, Cordova, and Horn Lake … or Chattanooga, Birmingham, and St. Louis. And that covers nigiri, shashimi, sushi … the raw and the cooked … delivered to you fresh from the kitchen, the sushi bar, or dramatically at table depending on location. What’s more: Sekisui’s Memphis-based.

1. Huey’s

2. Earnestine & Hazel’s

3. Alex’s Tavern

Best Kid-Friendly Restaurant

1. Huey’s

2. Kooky Canuck

3. Swanky’s Taco Shop

From the venerable Midtown location to its colonies elsewhere, Huey’s has it down. Huey’s won Best Burger, Best Lunch, Best Service, Best Kid-Friendly Restaurant, and Best Late-Night Dining. Goodness. Consistently great burgers, service, and beer have earned our love.

Best Indian

1. India Palace

2. Bombay House

3. Golden India

How do you want it? Mild, medium, or hot? Off the menu or buffet style? Meaty or vegetarian? India Palace, the popular place for years to eat Indian in Midtown, is also the place for catering and party hosting in its big, airy interior.

Best Home Cooking/Soul Food

1. Soul Fish

2. Cupboard

3. Blue Plate Café — Tie — Gus’s Fried Chicken

Soul Fish is the favorite with its signature catfish and some of the best sides in town: Try the black beans with the cucumber salad! Consistent, friendly service seals the deal for Soul Fish. And lurking below the surface of the menu is a Cuban sandwich that will pull you under with a smile on your face.

Best Vegetarian

1. Whole Foods Market

2. Trolley Stop Market

3. The Elegant Farmer

Memphis’ mother ship for all things organic is set for an expansion that will make it 60 percent larger and with better parking. Construction starts next year and will make room for more of the produce, prepared foods, and ingredients loved by Memphis’ often-overlooked vegetarians.

Best Seafood

1. Bonefish Grill

2. Half Shell

3. Tsunami

Flyer readers head east for their seafood fix. Bonefish Grill’s huge menu can make you feel like Aquaman summoning the bounty of the sea. Bonefish takes the bar very seriously, offering an equally wide array of drinks to chase the fish.

Best Sandwiches

1. Young Avenue Deli

2. Fino’s from the Hill

3. Lenny’s Sub Shop

“The Deli,” as we all seem to call it, is one of the legacies of Cooper-Young. The beer selection is outrageous, and people are nuts for the deli sandwiches as well as the burger, sweet-potato fries, and hot wings. A late lunch at the Deli on a fall weekend is advanced Memphistry.

Best Pizza

1. Memphis Pizza Cafe

2. Trolley Stop Market

3. Mellow Mushroom

Memphians love THEIR Pizza Café. Memphis Pizza Cafe sounds and feels like home to many, and it beat back some stiff competition from relative newcomers. Multiple locations and the quirky Memphian vibe are working for the Pizza Café.

Best Place for People-Watching

1. Flying Saucer

2. Peabody Lobby Bar

3. Young Avenue Deli

Location, location, location! The Flying Saucer takes real advantage of its great corner, and its open porch puts people-watchers in the thick of downtown: between the Peabody and Beale. Try any of the trillion beers they offer and watch Memphians prance and holler like we do.

Best Patio

1. Celtic Crossing

3. Boscos Squared

Celtic Crossing takes patio culture to the next level. With cooling fans in the summer and heaters in the winter, Celtic makes the tree-surrounded Cooper-Young corner a hotspot for trivia nights, live music, or just plain drinking.

Best Delivery

1. Garibaldi’s Pizza

2. Trolley Stop Market

3. Young Avenue Deli

Garibaldi’s has it covered: Germantown, East Memphis, the University of Memphis. Mike Garibaldi has been building his Memphis pizza-delivery empire since 1975. His three locations deliver local pizza, sandwiches, and salads.

Best Donut Shop

1. Gibson’s Donuts

2. Howard’s Donuts

3. Krispy Kreme Doughnuts

Gibson’s got your donuts. No matter how many people pack in on Saturdays after tee-ball games or Sundays before church, Gibson’s keeps it all moving with a smile. The array of donuts is enough to stupefy anybody. So take your pick. It’ll be good.

Best Coffeehouse

1. Republic Coffee

2. Otherlands

3. Café Eclectic

As a coffeehouse, Republic Coffee has much to recommend it. It’s centrally located and serves up a wonderful selection of coffees. Plus, it’s comfortable enough to settle down with your laptop and get some work cranked out. That said, plenty go to Republic for the eats, which include a fine barbecue tofu sandwich and tasty chicken salad.

Best Chef

1. Kelly English, Restaurant Iris

2. Andrew Ticer/Michael Hudman, Andrew Michael Italian Kitchen

3. Patrick Reilly, Majestic Grille

3. Paulette’s

Best Server

1. Jeff Frisby, Restaurant Iris

2. Renee Naidoo, Fox & Hound English Bar & Grill

3. Jean Pruett, Bardog Tavern

Kelly English’s opulent, creative spin on French-Creole cuisine rules the roost according to our readers, topping four categories. English is known for dishes like his towering “surf and turf” (New York strip stuffed with fried oysters and blue cheese), but you can pretty much close your eyes and point at the Iris menu and come out fine. Five-star cuisine with engaging service in an intimate setting? Sounds like great romantic dining to us. Sounds like great dining, period.

Nightlife

Best Bartender
1. Brian “Skinny” McCabe, Newby’s
2. Allan Creasy, Celtic Crossing
3. Evan Potts, The Cove
Newby’s still rules the Highland Strip, where, for years now, college students – and those of us who wish we were still college students – have congregated for good times, good tunes, and great service from our readers’ favorite barkeep.

In 2012, standout performers have included folk stalwart Todd Snider, Memphis soul icon Booker T. Jones, and country legend Emmylou Harris, but the Shell is also a risk-free environment to discover new artists.

Best New Bar

1. Alchemy

2. Slider Inn

3. Blind Bear

Best Bar

1. Alchemy

2. Bardog Tavern

3. Blind Bear

Best Martini

1. Alchemy

2. Peabody Lobby Bar

3. Side Street Grill

It didn’t take long for Cooper-Young’s Alchemy to vault to the top of the Memphis bar scene, winning more golds — five total, with two more in the Food & Wine section — in its first Best of Memphis competition than Michael Phelps or Missy Franklin brought home from London this summer. The hip, spacious bar — boasting a lengthy drink menu highlighted by a captivating list of specialty cocktails — is often crowded but always comfortable, with street-front dining, an active, open area around the bar, and an intimate, well-lit back room.

Best Band

1. North Mississippi Allstars

2. Lucero

3. Star & Micey

More than a decade into their run, the North Mississippi Allstars — brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson, with bassist Chris Chew — are better and more popular than ever. The trio’s most recent album, Keys to the Kingdom — a tribute to the brothers’ late father, Jim Dickinson — saw the band’s command of a sound that encompasses hill-country boogie, gutbucket blues, New Orleans soul, and Delta gospel at an all-time high. Touring demands make their local gigs rare these days, but that also makes them more special when they come around.

Best Pick-up Joint

1. Peabody Rooftop

2. Paula & Raiford’s Disco

3. Flying Saucer

Our readers know where the, ahem, action is. Thursday nights when the weather is right, the Peabody Rooftop is the classic Memphis party, with the best views of the city and the city’s most eligible.

Best Karaoke

1. Windjammer Restaurant & Lounge

2. Blue Monkey

3. P&H Cafe

Forget American Idol and The Voice, the real vocal action is on Brookhaven Circle, where the cheap pitchers of beer and karaoke classics never stop flowing at beloved hole-in-the-wall the Windjammer. As one regular told us, “You’ll hear everything from Reba McEntire to Katy Perry. I think every time I go I hear one lady doing ‘Black Dog’ by Led Zeppelin.”

Best Beer Selection

BOM 1. Flying Saucer

2. Boscos Squared

3. Young Avenue Deli

With more than 240 beers on tap and locations both downtown and in the eastern suburbs, Flying Saucer is a beer lover’s oasis that’s dominated this category. From Abita Amber to Yuengling Oktoberfest, the Saucer has whatever kind of beer you could want.

Best Singer

1. Amy LaVere

2. Joyce Cobb

3. Yo Gotti

After touring home and abroad on the strength of her terrific 2011 album Stranger Me, a swaggeringly musical suite of break-up songs, Memphis fave Amy LaVere has been back in the studio lately working on a follow-up. But in the meantime, she found the time to partner with some other ace Mid-South musicians (including “Best Band” member Luther Dickinson) in the folk/roots supergroup the Wandering. Over the past year or so, LaVere has packed our “Best Place To See Live Music” winner, the Levitt Shell, both as a solo act and with the Wandering. Memphis loves her in any form, and we can’t wait to hear what she comes up with next.

Best After-Hours Club

1. Earnestine & Hazel’s — Tie

Paula & Raiford’s Disco

2. Alex’s Tavern

3. Club 152 Beale

Best Hole in the Wall

1. Earnestine & Hazel’s

2. Alex’s Tavern

3. The Cove

It’s South Main Art Trolley night, and you’ve just polished off the last glass of free Merlot in the only art gallery that still had booze left. All you’ve had for dinner are crackers and cheese at your friend’s art show. Your tummy is grumbling. There’s only one answer to meet your after-hours booze and Soul burger needs — Earnestine & Hazel’s. It is, after all, the city’s finest hole in the wall. Bonus: There’s a haunted jukebox that’s said to play songs by itself, and sometimes the songs actually pertain to what customers are talking about. Creepy!

Best Margarita

1. Molly’s La Casita

2. Happy Mexican

3. Café Olé

No one knows for sure what’s in Molly Gonzales’ secret margarita recipe. Okay, okay. We’re sure the employees know, but let’s not ruin the mystique. Regardless of what’s in the sweet ‘n’ tangy tequila cocktail, we know it happens to be the best in town. Molly’s margaritas are served frozen or on the rocks, or if you’re a booze snob, opt for a top shelf margarita made with handcrafted Milagro tequila and Gran Marnier. Stop by on Mondays for $1.25 off house margs.

Best Happy Hour

1. Bardog Tavern

2. Flying Saucer

3. Boscos Squared

Downtown residents and workers can wet their whistle on the cheap every Monday through Friday since Bardog offers draft beers, well drinks, and wines by the glass for $1 off from 5 to 7 p.m. After you’ve knocked back a few, the Bardog poo poo platter, with shrimp skewers, pork and vegetable egg rolls, fried pickles, buffalo chicken tenders, and fries, is the perfect answer to the beer munchies.

Best Dance Club

1. Paula & Raiford’s Disco

2. Club 152 Beale

3. Rumba Room

Last fall, DJ Robert Raiford accidentally shot himself in his sleep. But thankfully for Memphis disco fans, the legendary, Jheri-curled DJ pulled through. His survival probably had something to do with Raiford’s hardcore staying power, which has also been reflected in his popular after-hours dance club. Even after retiring from the Hollywood Disco several years ago, Raiford just couldn’t stay away. Ever since, he and his daughter Paula have been keeping the strobe lights on at this downtown club. Flyer readers love to boogie down there, and they apparently like to do so well into the wee hours of the morning since the disco tied in the Best After-Hours Club category.

Best Sports Bar

1. Fox & Hound English Bar & Grill

2. Buffalo Wild Wings

3. Jack Magoo’s Sports Bar & Grill

Best Place To Shoot Pool

1. Fox & Hound English Bar & Grill

2. Young Avenue Deli

3. RP Billiards

If the Memphis Grizzlies are playing, you better bet the Fox & Hound has the game on. Same goes for the Memphis Tigers. But while you can see those games at just about any bar (or even at home), the Fox & Hound offers something that puts them a cut above the rest. The East Memphis watering hole broadcasts Ultimate Fighting Championships matches. And for those who like to rack ’em up, the Fox & Hound has plenty of pool tables.

Best Gay Bar

1. The Pumping Station

2. Spectrum

3. Dru’s Place

You won’t find leather-clad gay men here every night of the week, but the Pump is home base for members of Tsarus, the city’s fraternal leather club. If leather seems a little too much for you, never fear. The beer bust will loosen you up. Every Friday night and Sunday, the Pump offers a little something for beer fans of all kinds. Pabst Blue Ribbon is $3 for all-you-can-drink on Fridays and $5 on Sundays. But more sophisticated beer drinkers can opt for the $9 beer bust on Blue Moon and locally brewed Ghost River Golden.

Best Grizzlies Player
1. Marc Gasol

2. Zach Randolph

3. Rudy Gay

Best Local Athlete

1. Marc Gasol, Memphis Grizzlies

2. Zach Randolph, Memphis Grizzlies

3. Rudy Gay, Memphis Grizzlies

During the 2011-2012 NBA season, Marc Gasol put the Griz on his back, averaging 14.6 points per game and three assists. Currently one of the most impressive centers in the league, Gasol has the tools needed to help lead his team to victory during the NBA season and playoffs. Selecting him for both the Best Grizzlies Player and Best Local Athlete is only right.

Best Sports Team

1. Memphis Grizzlies

2. Memphis Tiger Men’s Basketball

3. Memphis Redbirds

Since migrating to the city in 2001, the Grizzlies have experienced their share of rocky NBA seasons. However, the team’s resilience and drive to win has brought forth brighter days over the last few years. Acquiring new talent, heightening its win record, and attracting more tourists and revenue to Memphis in the process, the Grizzlies deserve the label as the city’s best sports team.

Best Museum

1. Pink Palace Museum

2. Memphis Brooks Museum of Art

3. Children’s Museum of Memphis

The Pink Palace is like a bunch of museums crammed into one. There are exhibits dedicated to the natural history of the Mid-South, Memphis’ health-care history, the Civil War, yellow fever, and earthquakes, plus a planetarium and IMAX theater. But perhaps the most loved exhibit is the replica of the Piggly Wiggly, the country’s first self-service grocery store.

Best Golf Course

1. Mirimichi

2. The Links at Galloway

3. The Links at Overton Park

When looking to play a game of 18 holes, there are a host of golf courses to choose from in the area. But only one course is owned by Grammy and Emmy Award-winning entertainer Justin Timberlake. The Mirimichi golf course provides an eco-friendly atmosphere and a nice patio to chill out on. The course lives up to the meaning of its Native American name, “a place of happy retreat.”

Best Live Theater

1. The Orpheum

2. Playhouse on the Square

3. Theatre Memphis

Memphis’ only live Broadway theater has featured touring productions of everything from Memphis the Musical to Wicked to Monty Python’s Spamalot. But not only does the Orpheum offer Memphians a glimpse of the Great White Way, it also hosts touring musical acts like R. Kelly, foodie phenoms like Anthony Bourdain, and the occasional psychic (think Sylvia Brown). It doesn’t hurt that the grand old theater, with its gleaming gold embellishments and ornate chandeliers, is quite easy on the eyes.

Best Casino

1. Horseshoe Casino

2. Harrah’s Tunica

3. Gold Strike Casino Resort

With more than 70 table games and 2,000 slot machines, it’s a no-brainer why Memphians pick Horseshoe Casino as the best place to indulge in gambling. The delicious food, entertainment, and lodging are merely a plus.

Best Commercial Gallery

BOM 1. David Lusk Gallery

2. Gallery Fifty Six — Tie — Fountain Art Gallery

3. D’Edge Art & Unique Treasures

The names of the artists who have shown at David Lusk Gallery over the years read like a roster of the Memphis arts who’s who — Tad Lauritzen Wright, Nancy Cheairs, William Eggleston, Beth Edwards, Pinkney Herbert, Ted Faiers, John Torina, Twin. It’s this reputation for showing the fine work of local artists and artists from across the country that led Flyer readers to give David Lusk a commanding victory in this category.

Best College Gallery

1. Main Gallery, Memphis College of Art

2. Art Museum at the University of Memphis

3. Hyde Gallery, Memphis College of Art Graduate School

It makes sense that the best college art gallery would be found at the only local higher education institution dedicated solely to the arts. On any given day, you’ll find exhibitions of work by students, faculty, and visiting national artists.

Best Movie Theater

1. Paradiso

2. Studio on the Square

3. Ridgeway Four

3. Joey Sulipeck, WHBQ-TV Fox 13

We don’t build up our winners by disparaging the competition but — taking nothing away from any of the Bluff City’s other fine radar jockeys — this contest isn’t really fair, is it? Dave Brown’s half of the greatest announcing team in the history of televised wrestling, and even if he was born in Colorado, the silver-maned meteorologist is as Memphis as barbecue, blues, and an annual precipitation rate of 53.68 inches.

He spoke directly to and for the people he represents. “He’s like the Mississippi River, like Beale Street,” Wharton said. “I mean, what isn’t Memphis about Joe Birch? Memphis is Joe Birch. Joe Birch is Memphis.” Birch mended quickly and returned to WMC-TV August 1st. He still has great hair.

Best Garden Center

1. Dan West Garden Center

2. Midtown Nursery

3. Digger O’Dell Nursery

We can remember when Dan West was crammed into a former gas station on Poplar. Oh wait — they still are (though they recently opened a second location near Eads). But don’t let the tiny building fool you; the place offers anything that anybody with a green thumb can grow. We bought a dogwood a few years ago, and when it didn’t seem to be thriving, we brought the staff at Dan West some soil and they examined it, found the problem, and offered the cure. That’s how good these guys are.

Best Bicycle Shop

1. Peddler

2. Midtown Bicycle

3. Outdoors Inc.

The Peddler opened way back in 1971, selling 10-speed Raleigh road bikes and not much more. Fast forward 40 years, and this is your one-stop bike shop for anything on two wheels, whether you’re a professional road racer, a weekend mountain biker, or an urban commuter. Best Record Store (new)

1. Spin Street

2. Goner Records

3. Shangri-La Records

“Record” store really doesn’t begin to describe what you can find in this entertainment emporium. Sure, there are plenty of great albums and CDs, as you might expect. But customers can also browse a great selection of DVDs, entertainment-related books, posters and framed art, merchandise, and clothing featuring popular bands and movie stars.

Best Record Store (used)

1. Goner Records

2. Shangri-La Records

3. Spin Street

Goner brags that they offer “good old vinyl records” and, boy, they mean it — more than 1,100 the last time we checked, and the selection is astonishing. If you’re in the mood for the LP Battle of Rat Fink Hill, featuring “crude unissued Pittsburgh instrumentals” from the Sonics, Mad Hatters, Keys, and other bands from the early 1960s, they’ve got a copy. And a bargain, we think, at $13.99.

Now in its fourth generation of family ownership, the store is consistently named one of the Top 200 music retailers in the country. It’s a great place, and we have to admit we’ve grown fond of the girl playing the piano in the window.

Best New Car Dealership

READER’S CHOICE

Dobbs Honda

Gossett

Wolfchase Honda

Lexus of Memphis

Jim Keras

Is there a “worst” car dealership in town? Hard to say, since our readers named so many “best” ones that it was impossible to declare a clear winner in this category. If you’re looking for a new set of wheels, from Honda to Nissan to Volkswagen, you’re in good hands here.

Best Used Car Dealership

1. Carmax

2. City Auto

3. Gossett

Start paying attention to the little dealership decals on the backs of cars, and you can’t help but notice how many Carmax stickers you see. There’s a good reason for that: a wide-ranging inventory, quick and easy computer searches of all makes and models, and a friendly sales staff.

Best Motorcycle Dealership

BOM 1. Bumpus Harley-Davidson

2. Honda-Yamaha of Memphis

3. Southern Thunder

Gone are the days when a motorcycle shop housed a half-dozen bikes and a grimy parts counter. Bumpus, one of the top-selling Harley dealerships in the country, is a full-blown motorcycling experience. Sure, they have rows of gleaming Hogs, a parts counter, and service department. But half the building is devoted to accessories and what Harley calls “motorclothes,” which can include anything and everything, from a $400 leather jacket to a $10 scarf for your dog. Even if you’ve already bought a bike (or two), it’s hard to walk out empty-handed.

A museum dedicated to dearly departed Harold von Braunhut. He’s the

racist, but he invented Sea Monkeys. And he’s from Memphis.

Best Environmental Disaster: Silver-Headed Carp, 2006

They jump out of the water and into your boat. They’ve broken the
noses of unlucky water-skiers. And they’ve all but driven out the
natural species that are supposed to inhabit Mid-South waters. They’re
the silver-headed carp, and they are a true environmental horror
story.

Best New Acronym, 2007

Until this year, S.O.B. was a nice way of calling someone the son of
a really cranky lady. But leave it to Memphians to take the popular
slur’s acronym and use it to define what some City Council members and
county commissioners believe to be the scourge of our society: the
Sexually Oriented Business. Couldn’t they have tried a letter combo
that wasn’t already in use? Like BWHCBIA (Bars Where Hot Chicks Bare It
All). Or better yet, TPWBOPBDTOW (Those Places We Blow Our Paychecks
But Don’t Tell Our Wives).

Best Tease, 2008

We’ve never seen such joy, such jubilation, such emotion, as when
Mayor Willie Herenton announced he was going to retire. It was like the
Rapture or the Tigers making it to the Final Four.

Phone lines were jammed. People were getting out of their cars and
thanking their higher power. Former council members Brent Taylor and
Carol Chumney did cartwheels.

And what happened? Herenton didn’t resign.
