Friday-Saturday, May 2-3, 8 p.m. | Sunday, May 4, 2 p.m.
Madness, failure, yearning, and dreams yield danger, humor, reimagined psalms, and more in this unconventionally classic mother-child drama, where Jewish culture could be its own character in the cast. Time travels fluidly between 1950 and 2002, allowing for magical meetups as the action bubbles across metro-Jerusalem, New York suburbs, and beyond. Get tickets ($23.02) here

Chalkfest

Alton Brown Live: Last Bite
Orpheum Theatre
Saturday, May 3, 4 p.m.
In the Middle Ages, May was considered the month of three milkings because, apparently, with all the fresh spring grass the cows were eating, you could milk them three times in one day during May. And that friends is where my food fun facts end for the day, but if you want more, check out Alton Brown’s show at the Orpheum, where the famed foodist will “present several of his favorite culinary mega-hacks, sing some of his funny food songs, and in general offer a culinary variety show the likes of which human eyes have never seen.” Tickets ($51.90-92.90) can be purchased here

Valentine’s Day Shenanigans
Happy Valentine’s Day from us at the Flyer — most of us, I guess — well, me. I suppose I can’t speak on behalf of my coworkers. I’d assume they’d want to wish you a happy Valentine’s Day, but who knows? Then again, why give them the credit? Their byline isn’t up there at the top of this. They’re not about to come in clutch with these Valentine’s events right here because you’re a last-minute planner and are in need of something to do this weekend. I am. So here:

  • An Introduction to Fencing: Valentine’s Day Couples Edition: Nothing says I love you more than swordplay, so grab your Valentine for a special couples-only introductory presentation about the history, culture, techniques, and sport of fencing. $20. | First Congo, Friday, February 14, 6 p.m.

Soulful Murder Mystery: A Locomotive Themed Murder Mystery

Get a clue — in general, but more specifically this Sunday at the Soulful Murder Mystery part, where you’ll be transported into a world of rhythm, deception, and hidden motives. Guests will indulge in appetizers and smooth music as suspicious characters weave through the train station. Will you discover the truth before the train pulls into the final station? I don’t know, but I know you can find out more and get your tickets ($82) here.

Sam Morril
Minglewood Hall
Sunday, February 16, 7 p.m.
According to our intern Jake Sanders, last time comedian Sam Morril was in town, he forgot his pants. I mean, the man had sweatpants, which to me are pants — it’s in the name — but I guess they’re not “stand-up” pants. So, who knows what he’ll wear this go-around, but he’ll be at Minglewood. Tickets ($34-$61) can be purchased here. Oh, and read Jake’s article about Morril here.

Tuesday, February 18, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
As part of the newly launched Lunch & Listen series, the Memphis Listen Lab hosts Vox writer Rachel Cohen, author of “Why I Changed My Mind About Volunteering” that’ll be the focus of the lunchtime interview with Oscar-winner coach Bill Courtney. For background, she had disregarded individual action as an unhelpful distraction to the more important systemic change that was needed to solve our problems, but then she had a change of heart and mind. Find more information on the talk here.

Holiday Sip + Shop
Metal Museum
Saturday, December 7, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
Last Christmas I gave you my heart, and I’m afraid I can’t top that this year. I’m pretty sure I’ll be able to find something at the Metal Museum’s Holiday Sip + Shop, where there’s a curated selection of handcrafted gifts and unique treasures from talented artisans. Even if I can’t find anything, I can enjoy a complimentary glass of bubbly cava and delicious cookies while I browse. (P.S. Don’t forget about the St. Jude Marathon that might affect your driving path. You’ll be able to access the museum via the highway and Crump Blvd.)

Raised by Sound Fest
Crosstown Concourse
Saturday, December 7, 1-11 p.m.
The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear. And there will be lots of singing — and just plain-old sound — at the Raised by Sound Fest this Saturday. Starting at 1 p.m., you can expect a lineup of free music from Blue Tom Records (revue), fosterfalls, HeartBreak Hill Trio, Cut Worms, and Hurray for the Riff Raff (solo). Then there’s the main event — J Spaceman & John Coxon of Spiritualized doing a live score to William Eggleston’s Stranded in Canton — but it’s sold out, so unless you already have tickets, you snooze, you lose, baby. There is a ticketed after-party with a DJ set by the Black Keys and performances by Lil Noid and Tommy Wright III. You can still get tix ($65.87) here.

A Charlie Brown Christmas: Live On Stage
Orpheum Theatre
Saturday, December 7, 2 p.m., 5 p.m., 7:30 p.m.
Christmas time is here. … I’m singing the song from A Charlie Brown Christmas if you can’t tell, not just making a statement. It’s also the only part of the song that I know. I usually just mumble the other lyrics. I never bothered to learn the song, or really most Christmas songs. Oh well. That’s not the point. The point is that A Charlie Brown Christmas: Live On Stage is coming to Memphis, bringing my mom’s second-favorite animated Christmas movie to the stage. Tickets ($30-$60) can be purchased here.

It’s a Bestie Silent Book Club Pajama Party!
Novel
Saturday, December 7, 2-5 p.m.
Already tired of holiday parties? Or, at the very least, tired of adding them to your calendar? Here’s one that just might relieve your stress because all it calls for is a book and silence (you don’t even have to bring a book; you can buy one at the store if you so please). And pajamas if you’re bold enough to wear them in public. This event is free — no registration required, with complimentary hot cocoa.

Autumn Art Party
Urevbu Contemporary
Saturday, December 7, 4-8 p.m.
Urevbu presents this evening filled with art, music, food, drinks, and connections. This is more than an event — it’s an experience. Christmas Ghosts: A Victorian Tradition
Woodruff-Fontaine House Museum
Saturday, December 7, 4 p.m. & 7 p.m.
Woodruff-Fontaine House Museum welcomes ghosts of Christmas past — just past, no future and present; this isn’t A Christmas Carol (you can see that at Theatre Memphis now through December 23rd). In 19th century England, Christmas tradition was to huddle around the fire with the family and tell tales of spirits and spooks while celebrating the holiday season. Relive that tradition this weekend with Woodruff-Fontaine’s ghost experts. Refreshments, including warm cider and hot cocoa, will be served prior to storytelling and there will be a stroll through the mansion afterward to view all of her festive grandeur and trimmings of the season.

Stumbling Santa Holiday Pub Crawl
Flying Saucer Draught Emporium
Saturday, December 7, 7-11 p.m.
You better watch out, you better not cry, better not pout, I’m telling you why: Stumbling Santas are comin’ Downtown. They’re donating toys, heading to bars, spreading lots of Christmas joy at all of their stops. Join the Stumbling Santas Downtown. All you have to do is bring an unwrapped toy donation appropriate for a preschool-age child under 5 or a cash donation for Porter-Leath, and dress in your best festive attire! Planned stops include Rum Boogie Café, King’s Palace Café Tap Room, Silky O’Sullivan’s, The Absinthe Room, Blues Hall Juke Joint, Alfred’s, Courtside Grill, and Tin Roof. Those who can’t make it to the Stumbling Santa event can still donate online or by dropping off toys at Poplar Plaza (corner of Highland and Poplar) on Thursday to Saturday, December 5th to 7th; WMC Action News 5 (1960 Union) on Friday to Saturday, December 13th to 14th; or IKEA (7900 IKEA Way) on Friday to Saturday, December 20th to 21st. For more information and to view Porter-Leath’s wish list, visit here

Medical District Holiday Market
Memphis Made Brewing & Flyway Brewing Company (formerly High Cotton Brewing Company)
Sunday, December 8, noon-3 p.m.
Shop, shop, shop till you drop at this holiday market, presented by Memphis Medical District Collaborative at BOTH Flyway Brewing Company (formerly High Cotton Brewing Company) and Memphis Made Brewing Co. (For reference, the two venues are a three-or-so-minute walk from each other.) The full vendor list is here. I am far too lazy to type it all out; I hope you’re not too lazy to click on the link. But also I don’t care as long as you’re not too lazy to support local artists and businesses.

Sippin’ with Santa Paws benefiting Streetdog Foundation
Loflin Yard
Sunday, December 8, noon-4 p.m.
Santa Paws has made a list and all the good boys and girls are on it. They might not all know how to sit or stay. Some of them may lick you; some may drool; some may demand constant attention. But they’re all good boys and girls. That’s just how Streetdog Foundation rolls. Your $25 donation at this event will get you a picture with Santa Paws (featuring you and your 4-legged bestie and/or your human kiddos), a Santa Paws cup, access to the free dessert table, and a wristband to enjoy drinks discounted to $5 each. Plus, there will be live music, adoptable dogs, a silent auction, and a pup costume contest. Purchase tickets at the door (cash, card, or Venmo).

Science of Spirits
Lichterman Nature Center
Friday, November 15, 6-9 p.m.

Michael Donahue has already dashed any hope that this event will be an exploration of the supernatural world when he wrote about the Science of Spirits earlier this week. Fine. We can handle it. Especially because these “spirits” are the drinkable kind. At the Science of Spirits, guests will enjoy spirits tasting, food pairing, and fun activities that explore the science of making spirits. This inaugural event will feature caterer Bain BBQ, Huey’s, and Graz’n and distillers to help guests discover and appreciate the science and art behind their pairings. Monster Market
The Medicine Factory
Friday, October 11, 6-9 p.m. | Saturday, October 12, noon-8 p.m. | Sunday, October 13, 11 a.m.-8 p.m. | Monday, October 14, noon-8 p.m. | Tuesday, October 15, noon-9 p.m. | Wednesday, October 16, noon-8 p.m.
This weekend, Monster Market returns from the dead for its eighth annual pop-up. And as with years before, it’s expected to be a graveyard smash. The freaky annual pop-up shop, which appears each October, will bring you a new curated collection of weird art, hand-plucked oddities, strange apparel, and bizarre home decor. Visit memphismonstermarket.com/2024 for more info about this year’s pop-up, including the full maker roster. A few special (creepy?) events to keep on your radar while the market is open:

Connor Wood feat. Maggie Winters
Lafayette’s Music Room
Friday, October 11, 7 p.m.
If you’re on the TikkyTokky, you might’ve heard the viral audio clip: “Luckily, I have purse.” Kelsey Kreppel said that on Brooke and Connor Make A Podcast, and Connor — as in Connor Wood (see above) — called her out on it. Now, TikTok star Connor has comedy show in Memphis. Tickets ($35-$82) can be purchased here

Art Salon: The Fifth Installment, a Multimedia Art Exhibition
Minglewood Hall
Friday, October 11, 7 p.m.

Complementary food and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 day of show.

Halloween Costume Yardsale
Playhouse on the Square
Saturday, October 12, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.
To be or not to be, that is the Halloween question. To be a witch or to be a cat? To not be a zombie or to not be a skeleton? The decisions we mortals must make. Oh, the drama, but the drama can be less (or more, if you prefer) dramatic with the help of Playhouse on the Square’s Annual Costume Yard Sale, where you can snag one-of-a-kind Halloween costumes straight from past productions and bring your costume dreams to life, all for just $1 to $5 (that’s a deal that’s sweeeeeter than Halloween candy!). The event is cash and card, and Crack of Dawn food truck will be on site starting at 9 a.m., which is at the crack of dawn for this writer. This year, Playhouse is offering a preview day on Friday, noon to 2 p.m. For $10 at the door, you’ll get first dibs and a discount on your purchase (ooh la la).

Edge Motorfest
Edge Motor Museum
Saturday, October 12, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
Vrooom, vrooom, MFers (read: Memphis Flyer readers). You’ll be on the edge of your seat as more than 150 cars compete for 25 different awards. It’ll be a day of live music, food trucks, and a general good time.

Fall Flicker Fest
Urban Earth
Saturday, October 12, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
Fall has fallen upon us, and Urban Earth is celebrating with a festival with free activities for all ages, including face-painting and balloon-twisting (noon to 2 p.m.) and pumpkin painting (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.). Byway Coffee Co. and Lost Vegan Food Co. will be on site as will community partners Memphis Native Tree Works, The Compost Fairy, Experience Memphis Gardens, and Spay Memphis.

Paint Memphis
Willet and Lamar
Saturday, October 12, noon-7 p.m.
Sometimes making plans can be a paint in the butt, but when Paint Memphis is happening, you’re painted in a corner ’cause you gotta go. And Paint Memphis is happening THIS WEEKEND. This year, for its 10th festival, it’ll return to a past location at Willet and Lamar, bringing in 100 artists, half local and half from all over the world, to create murals that bring beauty and connect the community through public art. There will be a free mural workshop at 1 to 3 p.m., a vendor market of local makers, food trucks, a kid’s area, and more.

Oktoberfest Galore!
Oans, zwoa, drei, g’suffa! That means one, two, three, drink, for anyone who didn’t google “Oktoberfest phrases” like a smartypants like me because I’m preparing for all the Oktoberfests this weekend. There are — let’s count ’em — oans, zwoa, drei of them! And if you throw in the zoo’s monthlong Zootoberfest, where you can drink a bunch of beer while checking out all the animals, that makes whatever is four in German.

  • Oktoberfest in the Edge District: Memphis Made Brewing Co., Flyway Brewing Co., and High Cotton Brewing Co. are teaming up to throw an Oktoberfest celebration with special beers, games, food trucks, bands, and more. Board to Beers will be on site, and there will be a two-liter Mountain Dew holding contest, keg-rolling competition, opossum slingshot, and Madison Bridge Great Pumpkin Toss, plus a benefit beer for Hurricane Helene relief. | Flyway/High Cotton & Memphis Made, October 12, noon-10 p.m.
  • Overton Square Oktoberfest: Immerse yourself in a vibrant atmosphere filled with the sights, sounds, and flavors of Germany with craft beer, traditional food and music, folk dancers, a stein-holding contest, games, and a local makers market. | Chimes Square, Overton Square, Saturday, October 12, noon-5 p.m.
  • Crosstoberfest: Attendees can look forward to an array of local Memphis vendors, a petting zoo, face painting, a caricature artist, live music, various contests throughout the day, and beer. Free to attend. | Crosstown Brewing Company, Saturday, October 12, 1-10 p.m.

Ska-Tober Fest
Meddlesome Brewing Company
Saturday, October 12, 4 p.m.
What even is ska? Seriously. I’m asking. I’ve googled it, and I still don’t get it. I was born after the ska age — was there ever a ska age? Again, I’m seriously asking. All I know is that Meddlesome is hosting a ska fest full of ska bands, including Devon Kay & the Solutions, Left Hand Hotdog, Stuck Lucky, The Big News, The Skalors, and Joystick. I know nothing about any of them, but I’m sure they’re skawsome. (Does the ska scene appreciate puns?) The Ska-Tober Fest is free to attend.

Memphis Loves U: Hurricane Helene Benefit Concert
