Veiled Interest

Okay, this isn’t normally what we do on this blog, but … haven’t you had your fill of fashion yet this week?

The incomparable Melissa Anderson Sweazy will be signing her new book, Veiled Remarks: A Curious Compendium for the Nuptially Inclined, Thursday, September 24th at Elmwood Cemetery.

The book is supercute (and Melissa doesn’t know this, but it totally matches the decor in my living room) and full of interesting wedding tidbits. Such as the six rites of a Chinese wedding or how the traditional wedding shower began. Or, my personal favorite, the Wehman Brothers guide on how to flirt with one’s eyes, the dining table, a cigar, and a whip. Yes, a whip.

The signing will begin at 5 p.m. in the cemetery’s chapel. Veiled Remarks is also available here.

There will also be cake.

Break the Bank

The Flyer’s annual fall fashion issue is out today, and not to brag, but it’s so hot, it’s criminal.

The copies are going to go so fast that if you wait to pick one up, you’re going to have to steal it from somebody else.

Keep a Look Out.

Sneak Peek

The Flyer’s Annual Fall Fashion issue hits the stands WEDNESDAY morning, and I can guarantee if you don’t get one early, you’ll have to steal one from somebody else.

Here’s a sneak peek:

Model Behavior

This week Justin and I are off in some exotic, top secret locale, shooting the Flyer’s annual Fall Fashion issue.

(Which will be out on the stands September 17th. You can also get a sneak peek at the Flyer’s Work It Wednesday event September 16th at Automatic Slim’s.)

I would tell you where we are, but I won’t, because that would ruin the surprise.

Now generally, we go out in the wilds of Memphis and find our Style Sessions participants. This week, however, the pretty people walked right through our door as part of the fashion issue casting call.

Valencia Robinson wore a cute, plaid shirt-dress from Charlotte Russe. Dresses like this are so easy for a girl on the go. You just put it on and presto! Instant outfit.

But it’s the details — the tie at the waist, the little front pockets — that really make it stand out.

Robinson said she likes it for the detailing, but she also likes how comfortable it is.

“It short, so I can show off my legs,” she said. “It’s cool to be sexy, but I have to be comfortable, too.”

International Model

“I like black a lot,” says singer Marcela Pinilla. “I find it elegant and dressy no matter what you’re wearing.”

Her pants came from a boutique in Bangkok and the dress is from Singapore.

“I always like long tops, so sometimes I wear pants with dresses,” she says.

Also, if you would like to see Pinilla’s sense of style in person, she will be performing at the Levitt Shell Saturday, September 12th.

Role Model

Sara Roy’s job requires “dress casual.” When we met her, she had just come from work and was wearing a white camisole, tan slacks, and for a burst of pattern, a scarf belt.

“I like the scarf belt because it allows me to still have some style and femininity with the standard tan slacks,” she says.

Her pants are a cotton, no-wrinkle blend that flare slightly at the bottom and have a nice, wide cuff. But it’s the shoes — from Sears, and with little rhinestones — and scarf that give the whole thing a kicky vibe.

Style Steal

Here’s one of my favorite things about doing this blog: when I go up to someone in a cute outfit and explain what we’re doing, and they say something like, I just bought it.

Now I also love it when they say, I’ve had this for years. Because that’s just cool when something stands the test of time.

But when they’ve just gotten it, it’s like we’re validating their choice. And that makes them happy. Which makes me happy.

Such was the case with Stephanie Rollen. When asked about her Felecia Bella dress, she said she had gotten it that very day.

“My friend told me that everything at Felecia Bella was 60 percent off and the stuff was incredible,” said Rollen.

I think this dress was a good choice; it’s a flattering cut and the pattern is so vibrant.

“I got another dress, too. … It was 60 percent off!” she explained.

Not that she needed to tell me. Honestly, at a discount like that, how could you not?

Style Secrets

First, can we all agree that a martini glass makes a great accessory? It’s really too bad they’re relegated to nights and weekends, but maybe that’s part of what gives them their appeal.

When I “Mad Men-ified” myself (“Mad Menned”?) recently, I totally gave the Mad Me a little martini glass to carry around. It was either that or Don Draper …

Oh, right, you’re here talk about the clothes. I thought this was really simple but very elegant. We all know how I feel about white pants, and little black top is the more casual cousin of the little black dress.

But Julia McDonald was downright cute when we asked her about it.

“You want me to tell you the brands?” she asked. “That will give away the secret of my cheap shopping.”

In the end, we wrested the brands out of her (turns out martini glasses are good for that, too) and she told us her top was from Express and her pants were from the Loft. To finish the outfit, she added a pair of Coach sunglasses.

Print Halter

Susan Ronning says she usually dresses very casually, but she made an exception for the Literacy Council’s Taste of Cooper-Young.

This cute print halter is from Banana Republic and ties around the waist. (We had a discussion whether the print is navy or black, and to this day, I still don’t know the answer.)

“I dress extremely casual,” she told me, “like beachwear and work-out clothes.”

It occurs to me that sometimes you can tell a lot about a person by what they’re wearing (or by what they tell you they wear, in this case). Like beachwear … I immediately thought, this person is not from Memphis. This is a California girl. And I am jealous. B/c I really love beachwear.

Work Wear

Justin Fox Burks

Elizabeth Blondis doesn’t normally wear a dress to work.

“I work in a BBQ restaurant, so I wear shorts and t-shirts to work,” she says. “I’m very lucky.”

On this particular day, however, the Central BBQ owner was working the Memphis Literacy Council’s Taste of Cooper-Young.

This cute wrapdress from Kohl’s was just the ticket.

“I just put an apron over it and it’s short enough, the apron covered it,” she explained.
