Sister Swap

We also ran into Majestic Grille owner Deni Reilly last night, looking just as cute as ever. I always comment on her jewelry, but I won’t here because, well, have you seen the Orla Kiely bag?

I love how the strap of her bag — in the company’s signature pattern — echoes the color of her top from Muse.

The white jacket she got out of her sister’s closet in D.C. — “It’s vintage,” she says.

I had to ask: Does your sister know you took her vintage jacket? B/c I’ve got sisters. And I know that sometimes you get things from them, and sometimes you just take them. (Or maybe that’s just me.)

“She knows,” she says. “I brought her a whole bag of shoes. It was a wardrobe swap. You’ve got to do those things when you have a sister.”

Cute and Comfortable

It was early evening and nurse Jennifer Koonce was out for drinks with the girls when we spotted her.

It’s been my experience that drinks with the girls — especially right after work — have a certain dress code. You don’t need to be too dressed up — it’s just the girls, after all, and you don’t need to impress them — but you are going out, so you want to look cute.

Which is where Koonce’s Old Navy top, Express jeans, and Target earrings come in. She doesn’t look fussy or “too done,” just casually stylish.

When I asked about her style, she said it was casual and comfortable.

“I’m not going to wear something cute if it’s not comfortable,” she said. Which is, I have to say, a very good motto.

White on White

Ronni Covington is wearing what she describes as an “cool summer dress” with an “old school feel.”

Though she recently got it at Macy’s, she likes that it has a bit of a vintage shape.

“My style is really vintage with a bit of a jazzy feel,” she says. “I’m kind of a curvy girl, so I like to wear clothes that are fitted, and a-line dresses and skirts with a lot of flare.”

This dress has a great neckline, and the belt draws the eye down. And, really, it takes a special brand of adventurer to wear that much white. Especially to an outdoor event. I’m in awe.

Refind, Reuse, Recycle

Melissa Jouskey told me that she’s had this cute brown print sundress for years.

“I found some stuff in a box,” she said.

When I asked her about her necklace, she said she’s had that for years, too, but that people always comment on it. (It’s true; I did!)

“I just keep refinding my stuff,” Jouskey said.

Not a bad philosophy. I’m tempted to put some of my stuff in a box, just so I can find it again. Of course, chances are I’d put it in a box, forget about it, and give it to Goodwill by accident.

I’d also like to point out her very cute accessory, 5-year-old Killian. (Yes, people, I know animals are not accessories. But she is cute.)

Shell Style

I am of the opinion that not every girl can pull off a pair of high-waisted trousers.

But there is no doubt in my mind that Brittney Boyd definitely can.

“I’m going to church after this, so I wanted to be kind of snazzy, but kind of casual,” she said of her Charlotte Russe trousers and Old Navy tank.

To dress it up, she added maroon pumps from Shoe Carnival and a matching necklace from Wet Seal. I think the red accents pull it all together nicely without making it feel fussy.

Tangerine Dream

Let me tell you: When Justin and I hit the Music Commission show Sunday at the Levitt Shell, we saw a lot of orange clothing in the crowd. We saw apricot, peach, something that can only be described as traffic-hazard orange, and this lovely tangerine. (Yes, I know this sounds more like a fruit salad than a day at the Shell, but what are you going to do?)

Keshia Williams told us she got both her summer dress and her purse at a thrift store.

“That’s about all I shop,” she said. “I can get more clothes — and better quality clothes — for my money.”

The Maxi from Macy’s

Sometimes, an article of clothing just takes hold of you. It’s like love at first sight.

That’s what happened to Karen Brown with this patterned maxi dress.

“I wanted this dress,” she says.

She’s not kidding. She first saw it in a Macy’s in Atlanta, only they didn’t have it in her size. The salesperson called several other stores and found one in stock in Cleveland, which was then shipped to Tennessee.

We love love-stories that go like this: girl meets dress, salesperson is super helpful, girl gets dress, and everyone lives happily ever after. The end.

In the Swim

The day we caught up with 22-year-old Chelsea Day was the first time she had worn this breezy aquamarine … dress? shirt? thing?

“My best friend gave this to me last year,” she says. “She used to wear it as a bathing suit cover-up. She’s like 7 feet tall and she said this would be a good dress on you.”

Memphis, this is what we’re talking about: Unique, personal style, where you can wear a dress as a bathing suit cover-up, or a bathing-suit cover-up as a dress.

We liked the color and the scalloped edges with the floral embroidery. It’s just so … fluttery (is that a word?) and easy. The sides have two small slits that caught the breeze, and the day we met Day, it was — is this not the refrain of this blog or what? — stiflingly hot, so any breeze catching was very welcome.

Love-Thirty

We ran into Denver resident Natalie Dunn checking out downtown with her mom and thought she looked very sporty and put together — kind of like the Kennedys at Hyannisport.

Turns out there’s a good reason:

“I’m here for a tennis tournament, so I just packed some easy stuff,” she told us.

Sometimes you just can’t go wrong with easy. Both the shorts and the maroon tee are from Abercrombie. The sunglasses are Ray-Ban aviators.

Work It Wednesday

Sometimes you don’t have a lot of time between work and whatever you want to do afterward.

Brittany Myers solved this problem with a little ingenuity. We ran into her at the Flyer’s Work It Wednesday event at the Silly Goose (which was, coincidentally, Wednesday evening), and she told us that after work she changed into shorts from Banana Republic.

“I wore the top to work,” she said of her colorful blouse, also from Banana Republic. “I did not wear the shorts.”

She also added the over-sized Jessica Simpson earrings to her ensemble after she got off work, completing her day to night look.
