Little Teal Dress

I’m not going to lie: I first noticed Stevie Phillips because of her great haircut.

We were at the Memphis Music Foundation’s anniversary party, and there were so many people there, and they were so close together, that it was kind of hard to see people’s outfits.

But the sea of people parted and we spotted Phillips’ v-neck teal dress from Sachi in Laurelwood.

First of all, the color is just gorgeous. The dress has some muted detailing down the front, which adds an element of visual interest but doesn’t overpower the delicate trim at the neck or the thin belted waist.

Phillips is also carrying a purse she got for $6 at an estate sale.

“I’m not afraid to match things that wouldn’t ordinarily go together,” she says. “I experiment a lot.”

Perfect Summer

Stephanie Farga is wearing a cute little sundress from Target, but it’s really her accessories that drew our eye once we started chatting with her.

From the pink scarf in her hair to the fake tattoos gracing her neck and arm to the Bonnaroo wristband, this whole outfit just says young and fun and summer.

I could just see her in one of those road-tripping Coca-Cola commercials, y’know? The ones where they try to create the perfect summer? Seriously, Coke people: You should cast this girl.

Fresh and Neat

“I don’t know where I got any of this,” says Las Vegas resident Brandy Wood of her long shorts and tank top.

We caught up with Wood at Earnestine & Hazel’s, one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions.

She said her style centers on comfortable and basic, and I think that’s what drew us to her outfit: Even though it was rather warm, and Wood was a tourist, and we were in a former brothel, she just looked so fresh and neat.

Chelsea and Violet

We spotted Jasmin Saville and her cool and collected Chelsea and Violet dress at one of South Main’s many trolley stops. We loved the pouf sleeves and the bibbed neckline, as well as the pattern.

She told us she got it at Dillard’s and that she wore it that night because “it’s art night and it’s a lot of fun.”

You can’t see them in this picture, but the dress also had three precious little buttons on the back of the neck.

Classic Lines, Care of Straight Line Wind

During the straight line wind that knocked out power to 120,000 households in June, a tree fell on Anna Talley’s house and damaged the wall of her room.

The law firm intern has been staying elsewhere while it’s repaired and says the storm had an impact on what she’s been wearing.

“The only clothes I kept with me were ones I could wear to work,” she says.

We love this classic, but modern take on a darted black skirt. It even has pockets, which we are a complete sucker for.

“I like stuff that’s easy,” Talley says. “I don’t like trendy clothes, because I don’t feel like I can wear them again.”

Bringing the Heat

It’s definitely summer in Memphis, and it is HOT.

The other day, Justin and I were out on South Main (We totes went for the Memphis Music Foundation anniversary party, but it was more crowded in there than a clown car, so we had to bail after a little while) and everyone was saying essentially the same thing: I wore this b/c it’s hot outside.

Kate Evans, shown here in a tangerine Jenny Han dress and gladiator sandals, is an old friend of the Flyer’s fashion coverage.

“I wanted to wear something loose because it’s hot,” she said. “In Memphis, you have to show as much skin as possible or you’ll die from the heat.”

We think her outfit’s pretty hot, too.

With its one-shoulder styling and delicate belt, Jenny Dusanek’s Grecian-inspired top is perfect for hot summer nights on the Peabody rooftop. Wearing the top with slim black pants from Banana Republic and delicate thongs from White House Black Market, Dusanek described her style as “modern yet classic.”

Bare Shoulders

When heading to the Peabody rooftop party, Terri Robinson wanted to wear something cool, but on the classic side. She choose a sleeveless top from White House Black Market with a charcoal-wash jean.

She said she wasn’t used to wearing her shoulders bare, but she’s “getting more into it lately. … I feel young and vibrant. Life is great.”

Our favorite part, though, was when she said, “I don’t do trampy.”

As if we couldn’t tell.

Beaded Halter

Out of all the people we’ve shot so far, Regina Washington was the one I felt like we ambushed.

I mean, most of our fashionistas have been walking around, hanging out, partying … in two words: easily approachable.

Washington was eating dinner with a friend.

I thought she looked so cool and collected and, yes, comfortable, that I couldn’t resist interrupting her dinner. And that was before I saw all her great jewelry.

Thanks again, Regina!
