A member of the Christian Brothers University (CBU) baseball team is facing a four-game suspension and an investigation for a racial slur made during a game last week, CBU athletic director Brian Summers said.
The player’s comments happened during the team’s March 7th game versus LeMoyne-Owen after two of their players and one from CBU were ejected for a game-related altercation that led to a fight.
In the aftermath of the fight, before the players could be properly ejected, the racial comment was made by a CBU player, leading to another larger fight involving several players from both teams’ benches.
The incident has not been taken lightly, Summers said in a statement on Monday.

In addition to ensuring that a time is arranged for the CBU player to apologize to LeMoyne-Owen’s team in person, Summers said several other steps have been taken to correct the situation, including an internal Title VII investigation initiated by the dean of students. Moving forward, the dean of students, along with the associate president for student life will also implement training and education for the CBU body related to racial equality and inclusion.
Documentation of the incident was also sent to the NCAA Division II national coordinator of baseball officials for an investigation.
“As director of athletics at a Catholic university, I can attest to the fact that we take our Catholic heritage very seriously at CBU,” Summers said. “We condemn actions that do not reflect our core values and the Lasallian educational principles that include respect for each individual as a unique person, a spirit of community, and a quest for justice and peace.
“We regret that this happened, and we hope that this will be a transformational experience for our students and our entire community.”
