Devil’s Music

Dubbed the Empress of Blues, legendary singer Bessie Smith’s life was cut short by a tragic car accident. But in Theatre Memphis’ production of The Devil’s Music: The Life and Blues of Bessie Smith, her soulful sound comes back to life through the voice of local jazz legend Joyce Cobb.

Cobb portrays Smith in her final concert and addresses Smith’s alcoholism, lesbianism, sexual escapades, and the horrors of facing the KKK in the Deep South.

The Devil’s Music opens Thursday, April 6th at the Next Stage at Theatre Memphis.
