Memphis’ new bike share system will officially launch Wednesday, May 23rd, Explore Bike Share announced Tuesday.

The system will initially have 600 bikes located at 60 stations across the city from Uptown and Downtown to South Memphis and Orange Mound to Overton Square to Cooper-Young.

“Our full-staff team of nine and BCycle operations partners are working around the clock to operationally implement and communally introduce a top-tier bike share system for the city of Memphis,” said Trey Moore, executive director of Explore Bike Share. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to bring these bikes to the streets and infuse them into the daily routines of Memphians and visitors.”

To celebrate the system’s launching, coined “The Big Roll-Out,” in partnership with the Downtown Memphis Commission, Explore Bike Share will hold a community gathering at Court Square on the 23rd at 9:30 a.m.

Volunteers will ride the 600-bike fleet to Court Square and then afterward lead a “station migration,” distributing the fleet to the respective stations around the city. Volunteers can sign up on The Big Roll-Out Facebook page and select which neighborhood they want to lead a ride to.

Additionally, Explore Bike Share memberships options ranging from weekly to annual are available for purchase now. Also, in step with the nonprofit’s mission to “provide an affordable, accessible and approachable transportation for all,” there’s a “Pay It Forward” membership option which secures an annual membership to the purchaser and one Memphian in need of reliable transportation.

“The time is now for every individual and organization to take advantage of the benefits that come with this dynamic new asset for Memphis,” said Moore. “We’re ready for Explore Bike Share to officially roll in with a robust introduction and collective of partners and people.”

In 2019, Explore Bike Share is slated to add an additional 300 bikes to its fleet.
