FABRICATE?

Last week, Harold Ford Jr. baffled the reasonably literate readers of The Huffington Post Web site with a somewhat confusing and seemingly contradictory editorial about the funeral of Coretta Scott King. “Like all believers in the power of nonviolence to achieve social change and justice, I mourned the loss of Coretta Scott King,” Ford wrote. He continued, “Funerals should not be ceremonies to fabricate a life’s works. They are a time to celebrate with honesty and dignity a woman’s life.” We’re not entirely sure what fabrication he was referring to, but we are sure that Ford — a congressman who voted for the war with Iraq — called himself a believer in nonviolence.
